Ozzy Osbourne was rock 'n' roll's 'Prince of Darkness.' How he got the twisted nickname

USA Todaya day ago
You can call him Ozzy, but to the world, Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne will always be the reigning Prince of Darkness.
The heavy metal icon, best known for his eerie vocals and outlandish stage persona, died on Tuesday, July 22, according to a family statement shared with USA TODAY. He was 76. Osbourne's death comes just weeks after he reunited with Black Sabbath for a final show in England.
Born John Michael Osbourne, the rock vocalist found early fame as the lead singer of Black Sabbath, an English heavy metal outfit that earned fan fervor — and industry criticism — for its dark sound and occult image.
Ozzy Osbourne dies: Black Sabbath rocker was 76
As Black Sabbath began to make a name for itself with the group's musical unholiness, Osbourne was christened the band's Prince of Darkness.
Why is Ozzy Osbourne called the 'Prince of Darkness'?
Black Sabbath, which was formed in the late 1960s by Osbourne alongside guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward and bassist Geezer Butler, previously went by the group names the Polka Tulk Blues Band and Earth.
The band landed on Black Sabbath after members observed a screening of the 1963 Italian horror film of the same name across the street from their rehearsal room. Inspired by the horror genre, the group wrote the song "Black Sabbath," which became its new name, as well as the title track of its 1970 debut album.
In a 2016 interview with NME, Osbourne said fans' reactions to the song's doom-metal sound helped spawn his dark nickname.
"When we started gigging way back when, as soon as we started playing this song's opening chords, young girls in the audience would ... freak out," Osbourne said at the time. "They thought we were Satan's ... friends or something."

Osbourne reflected on the legacy of the macabre alias in a July 2013 interview with the Broward Palm Beach New Times.
"It's a name. I didn't wake up one morning and go, 'You know what, I'm going to call myself…'" Osbourne told the outlet. "It started as a joke name, really. I'm OK with it, you know? You know, it's better than being called an a------."

Doctor charged in Matthew Perry's death pleads guilty to supplying ketamine to actor

A physician charged alongside four others for his role in actor Matthew Perry's death pleaded guilty in court Wednesday, July 23. In court, Dr. Salvador Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of illegal distribution of the prescription anesthetic ketamine and faces up to 40 years in prison. In June, Plasencia agreed to plead guilty to his role in the substance abuse that contributed to the "Friends" star's tragic death in 2023. Also known as "Dr. P," Plasencia first signed a plea agreement on June 13 drafted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, according to a court document filed June 16 and obtained by USA TODAY. Ketamine is a short-acting anesthetic with hallucinogenic properties. It is sometimes prescribed to treat depression and anxiety, but is also abused by recreational users. As part of the plea deal, Plasencia acknowledges that he "knowingly distributed ketamine" to Perry before his 2023 death, behaved in a manner "outside the scope of professional practice," and that the drug distribution lacked "a legitimate medical purpose." Doctor who supplied Matthew Perry with ketamine to plead guilty, faces 40 years in prison In addition to prison time, other conditions of Plasencia's sentence could also include a three-year period of supervised release, a fine of $2 million (or alternatively, "twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offenses") and a mandatory special assessment of $400. In August 2024, Plasencia was charged alongside Jasveen Sangha, whom the Department of Justice previously referred to as "The Ketamine Queen" of North Hollywood, and the pair faced 18 criminal counts for allegedly "distributing ketamine to Perry during the final weeks of the actor's life." Perry, best known for his role as the wisecracking Chandler Bing on "Friends," died in October 2023 at the age of 54 after the actor was found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home. The drug-related nature of Perry's death prompted a sweeping investigation in May 2024 by several U.S. agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. An autopsy report released in December 2023 revealed that Perry's death was an accident, with the cause being "the acute effects of ketamine." Contributing factors were drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine. Tennis star Venus Williams just revealed she's engaged. So, who's the lucky guy?

Love-love. Actually, amore-amore. Venus Williams made her singles return on Tuesday at the Mubadala Citi DC Open after a hiatus, but she's doubled up in her personal life. The tennis legend, 45, is engaged. So, who's the lucky fellow? Though she didn't divulge his name, according to widespread reports, it's the same guy she's been dating for a good bit: Hunky Italian actor Andrea Preti. The happy news came from the bride to be herself in a post game interview after beating Peyton Stearns, 22 years her junior. 'My fiancé is here, and he really encouraged me to keep playing,' Williams said at William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. 'Do you know how hard it is to play tennis? It's 9 to 5 except you're running the whole time. Lifting weights and just, like, dying, and then you repeat it the next day. So, he encouraged me to get through this, and it's wonderful to be here.' The couple first sparked dating rumors last summer after being snapped by paps on vacation in Italy, and managed to keep the relationship largely under wraps. So who's the groom-to-be? As per IMBD, he's a 37-year-old native of Denmark who was raised in Italy and attended acting school in NYC. The former model's last credit is the 2023 movie 'Temptation,' a love-triangle drama which premiered on Amazon Prime. We see no sign of either one of them on their respective Instagram pages, but hopefully that will change once vows have been swapped. It's unclear where the two will tie the knot, in her home base of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, or on his turf in Europe. No doubt little sister Serena, 43, will be on hand to give Venus some pointers on married life. The Grand Slam champ wed Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, 42, in 2017, and they have two ring girls available, Olympia, who turns 8 in September, Adira who turns 2 next month.
