Sometimes, if you are a straight woman, it can be tempting to see your sexuality as a curse. It is a cliche to talk about the uselessness of men, but I do it anyway: it is a neat way of avoiding the fact that I too can be selfish and cruel to the men who go out with me. Writing in the New Inquiry in 2019, Asa Seresin used the term 'heteropessimism' to refer to this tendency among straight women. As Seresin points out, this way of thinking is not terribly helpful, because it is really an abdication of responsibility. If men are irredeemable, and loving men is always going to make women unhappy, then we don't have to attempt the difficult work of trying to make our relationships more equitable.
What makes Shon Faye's memoir about love so refreshing is that it resists heteropessimism, and tries to do something more hopeful. Faye is a trans woman who spent years convinced that she would always be an 'exile' from the closed world of heterosexual romance, but the idea she puts forward in this book is that this sense of exclusion is not unique to her. Faye argues that, collectively, we ask too much of romantic love: we expect it to solve all of our problems and when, inevitably, it doesn't live up to the hype, we feel excluded from the 'happy kingdom' of successful partnership. Instead of blaming men for love's disappointments, Faye analyses her breakups to try to imagine better ways of approaching relationships. This is a memoir but it is also a kind of self-help book. Faye is trying to teach herself – and her reader – how to love in a different way.
Much of Faye's writing is deeply personal, but a political thesis underpins Love in Exile. Drawing on the work of the academic Mark Fisher, Faye argues that, under capitalism, love has been privatised. The erosion of the welfare state has put intolerable stress on couples by making romantic love the exclusive source of affection that should properly be found outside the home, in labour unions and within communities. Faye's analysis is not vague here – she references specific cuts to local authority budgets that have chipped away at the social care infrastructure – but still, I found these parts of the book unconvincing. Faye argues that we idealise romantic love as the source of all meaning and happiness because capitalism has failed us, stating that we began to conceive of love as 'transcendent' and 'quasi-spiritual' during the industrial revolution, when community bonds started to dissolve. I don't doubt that better social care provision would alleviate strain on couples, but blaming your failure to find love on capitalism, as Faye does here, feels a bit of a reach to me. Haven't human beings throughout history always turned to their lovers for a specific form of intimacy and affection that cannot be replaced by community support networks, even if they were fully funded? Also, if we have to end capitalism before we can attempt to have successful romantic relationships, then my future – as a single, 33-year-old woman – looks bleak.
Love in Exile is more enlightening when Faye suggests specific changes we can effect – on an individual level – to make our relationships more enriching. Throughout the book, she pushes herself to acknowledge her own role in creating dysfunctional relationship dynamics. Writing about sex, Faye suggests that she actually presents herself as less desirous than she really is in order to shore up her gender identity: 'The more I present myself as a passive actor in sex, the more I satisfy the cultural demand placed on trans women to be non-threatening. The more I – frankly – seem like a woman to others.'
The best writing in this bookacknowledges that we fall in love in a capitalist patriarchy, but doesn't pretend that women are only ever passive victims of those systems. Heteropessimism is fun because it is easy. To be reminded that you have agency is uncomfortable, but it is also freeing. In a chapter towards the end Faye writes about how to cultivate kindness and compassion towards herself. This is the closest Love in Exile gets to straight self-help, as Faye shares strategies like learning to 'say no' more, and trying to silence her own internal critical voice. (Faye is so funny and self-deprecating that her advice is never preachy, but she writes that one thing that has brought her some measure of peace is regular prayer.) Love in Exile is sincere in a way that reminds me of bell hooks' 1999 book All About Love, which Faye cites as an influence. Like hooks, Faye is prepared to mine every experience, and share every hard-won lesson to try to get her reader to love in better ways – even if those lessons are, in their very earnestness, exposing. I find her vulnerability generous.
There is no redemption arc here. Faye writes in her postscript that she hasn't found romantic love, or even total self-love. She suffered a new heartbreak in the middle of writing the book, and was shocked to discover that she had 'acquired no new mastery over my own emotions'. It hurt just as much. But the end of this book is, crucially, optimistic. Faye refuses cynicism and commits to trying again. Her writing will shake your illusions about love, but remind you of the value of even attempting it. By the time I put down this book I felt hopeful about men, and heterosexuality in general – which, considering I read it in the aftermath of a breakup, is no small thing.

Faye Winter, who found fame on the 2021 series of the ITV dating programme, has never shied away from talking about her experience on the show and how she turned things around after becoming the most complained about contestant. ‌ But just days after the show came to an end on Monday, which saw Toni Laites and Cach Mercer crowned by host Maya Jama, winning an impressive £50,000 between them, Faye, 30, was quick to speak out on social media about the trolling that some of the Islanders have been receiving. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025. ‌ Taking to Instagram in view of her 1.1 million followers, Faye said: " Love Island is over. The comments I'm seeing are vile. Let's get something straight: These islanders don't know you, and you don't know them. Before you post that nasty comment, ask yourself, will it actually make your life any better? You tuned in. You watched the drama unfold. You got exactly what you begged for, for years people have been saying it boring. ‌ "But with drama comes real people, real feelings, and real consequences. The show's over. The performing monkeys you were entertained by are out of the circus now. Let them rest. Let them decompress. Let them process the experience and do their eight sessions of therapy with someone who's actually qualified. "They don't need Agatha from Accounts dishing out unsolicited opinions. If you liked them, support them. If you didn't? Move on with your life. The cast, regardless, gave you the entertainment you begged for. Now give them what they deserve, a break." ‌ Faye later went on to share a screenshot taken from AI software ChatGPT, showing the denotation of the word 'show'. It said: "A performance or production created to entertain an audience. It can take many forms, including television programs, stage plays, concerts, reality TV, or online content. A show typically involves scripted or unscripted elements designed to evoke emotion, tell a story, or spark engagement." This year's series of the programme has since become the most complained about series since the show launched in 2015. One scene, in particular, attracted over 9,000 complaints to broadcasting watchdog, Ofcom. Islanders had been accused of bullying Shakira, leading to 9,339 people lodging official complaints. ‌ Across four episodes in July, a staggering 9,339 complaints were made about the show, with the majority relating to "alleged bullying behaviour towards Shakira". These included 2,272 complaints made on July 22, around 1,716 complaints made on July 23 and 958 complaints made on July 25 following the aftermath of the Grafties. Meanwhile, a press officer for Ofcom told the Mirror that a further 56 complaints were received over "alleged bullying involving Toni and Shakira towards Emily". Ofcom also received over 1,000 complaints about "misogynistic" behaviour last month. In the regulator's weekly audience report, figures confirmed that more than half of the complaints were made about the show on July 18, which saw Harrison Solomon, 22, and Lauren Wood, 26, leave the Spanish villa together. On 20 July, Ofcom said the "majority of complaints related to alleged misogynistic behaviour by Dejon". Meanwhile, earlier in the week on 15 July, 107 complaints related to "alleged misogynistic behaviour by Harrison". In recent years, ITV has introduced extensive duty of care protocols for the Islanders, including training and information prior to entering the villa, and support once they head home.

Since the scenes were aired, Faye has sadly received death threats from sick viewers. Upset viewers then vowed to vote Faye off the show and complain to Ofcom after she "screamed for an hour". OPEN UP Faye has candidly revealed the toll her mental health took after leaving the villa. In a recent chat on Paul C. Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast, she said: "I remember feeling so lost, I remember feeling like what am I meant to do now? "I remember feeling I don't want to be here." Wiping away tears from her face, Faye went on and said: "I felt like all the pillars in my life were crumbling, and I didn't want to be here anymore." Asked by host Paul what she meant by that, Faye said: "I just knew in my heart of heart that it would be easier if I wasn't here. "But I just remember feeling I don't want to be in this house, I don't want to be around these people, I don't want to be doing this job, I feel worthless and I'm alone again." This isn't the first time that Faye has bravely opened up about how the backlash from Love Island has affected her. Faye shared the Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer that you can buy from Cult Beauty for £28. The concealer currently has over 200 reviews on the beauty site, with an average star rating of 4.5 out of a possible five stars. One shopper who loved the concealer said: "Amazing brightening concealer, tried in a flagship store to do a wear test and using in conjunction with the corrector has really brightened up my eye area. "It's very hydrating. The shade match is perfect." Faye also shared some of the other beauty products she uses, which include the Trinny London Trinity Multitasker for blush that costs £36. The product is a handy stick that can be used for lips, cheeks, and eyes. This is said to give a hydrating high shine finish. Also in the video and available at LOOK FANTASTIC is the Heliocare 360 Color Gel Oil-Free Sunscreen Protector SPF50+ which retails for £33 but has been cut to £25. It gives a fair amount of coverage if you don't have major eye bags or discolouration etc." Other shoppers were pleased with their purchase, however, with another writing: "Lovely and lightweight under the eyes . Definitely makes me look less tired." Another dubbed the concealer their 'favourite', commenting "I have tried hundreds of concealers over the years and this is by far my favourite. "Medium coverage, which is good for natural every day and also buildable for more full coverage." A third who titled their review 'fab' wrote "Love this concealer - easy to apply and lovely consistency."
