Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered review – the good, the bad and the gloomy of Lara Croft releases
A lot will depend on your personal history with Lara Croft. Those of us who wasted entire English Literature degrees watching her fall off things will thrill at the sight of every rusty key and sinister spike pit. My 13-year-old son, however, took one look at the blocky visuals, asked if I definitely had the enhanced graphics turned on, and walked out of the room shaking his head in pity. Bloody kids.
There are three games in this collection. The standout title is Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation. First released in 1999, it is set in the ruins of ancient Egypt, which feels equally long ago. Like all the best games in the series, it combines expansive, atmospheric environments with smart puzzles that are satisfying to solve. There are some lovely moments of Lara lore, like the scene that explains how she got her iconic leather backpack. (Although not how it's able to contain six guns, eight medipacks, countless keys, the Amulet of Horus, a grenade launcher and a kayak.)
At the time of launch, Last Revelation was criticised for lacking innovation. But looking back, and at what came next, maybe we didn't know how good we had it. Bloody kids.
Chronicles was the fifth Tomb Raider game released in five years. The team at Derby-based studio Core Design was burned out, by all accounts, and fed up with being forced to deliver yet another instalment in time for Christmas. The result is a game that is technically serviceable, but feels flat and soulless. The locations are uninspired and devoid of atmosphere. The visuals are bland and gloomy. It feels like Lara is just going through the motions. She can walk a tightrope now, and there's a bit of stealth, as was the fashion at the time. But these are tedious tricks, and they aren't enough to distract from the fact that the magic is gone.
However, it's the final offering which marks the low point of this collection, and the entire series. The Angel of Darkness was the first Tomb Raider outing for PS2. It was released in 2003, which you can tell just by looking at it. The game opens on a rainy evening in Paris, apparently; the dismal industrial buildings and empty warehouses make it feel like a damp night in Croydon. Lara is a vision in double denim, complete with the obligatory cropped jacket and hiphugging bootcut jeans of the era. It feels like you're on a quest to find out what happened to the other members of B*Witched.
Maybe the tightness of the clothes have restricted Lara's ability to navigate environments with her usual grace and dexterity. Her movements are sluggish and clunky in this game, her jumps awkward. She is weaker than she's ever been; a new stamina meter limits her ability to hang off ledges, and you have to build up her strength by pushing crates around before she can handle more physically taxing tasks. This is as dull and annoying as it sounds.
Lara has a new love interest, Kurtis, who is incredibly irritating and looks like he plays bass for Linkin Park. (Maybe they met at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party.) There's more stealth nonsense, which involves Lara crouching slightly as though she's suffering from digestive issues, and a badly executed attempt to introduce some open world elements. The whole thing is messy, frustrating and depressing.
It's also intriguing if you're interested in the history of video games and how they're made. Yes, there's a clear failure to maintain what made Tomb Raider so special in the first place: Lara's agility and autonomy, clever puzzles, actual tombs. This game is too busy trying to keep up with the Joneses; or rather, the Metal Gear Solids and Grand Theft Autos that were so popular at the time. But there are also hints at ideas that series such as Assassin's Creed and Uncharted would go on to execute brilliantly.

So what stopped Core from pulling it off? Perhaps it was the limitations of the technology at the time. Maybe it was poor team management, or the pressure to hit shareholder deadlines before the game was ready. Probably a combination of all these things. In any case, while The Angel of Darkness is tiresome to play, it's interesting to look at as a historical artefact.
The same is true of Chronicles, as an example of what happens when you try to produce creative work in a sweatshop. But The Last Revelation is vintage Tomb Raider. So for £25 you get a well-crafted, enjoyable game, a strange curio, and a flawed but fascinating piece of gaming history. Not quite as valuable as a Ming vase, but good value, and a lot more fun.

Prince Andrew lost his virginity at the age of 11, a royal biographer has claimed. Andrew Lownie made the bombshell claim in his new 456-page tome 'Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York'. The Duke of York's first sexual experience was when he was aged 8, according to an unnamed source. 'He admitted that his second sexual experience came before he turned 12 and when he was 13 he had already slept with more than half-a-dozen girls,' the source said. 'I believe this might be the root of Andrew's problems.' Mr Lownie, a celebrated biographer, gave a jaw-dropping first interview about his book to the Daily Mail's unmissable Palace Confidential show. In it he claimed Andrew had slept with up to 3,000 women and had multiple affairs in his first year of marriage to Sarah Ferguson. His early sexual experiences are said to have been when Andrew 'realised he was obsessed with women'. They are detailed in the book under the subheading 'Randy Andy' - something Mr Lownie says he was called at school, and later by the press. One source close to Andrew told The Telegraph the Duke had previously 'alluded to sexual experiences at what most of us would consider as too young an age, poor chap'. 'The Duke's personal story is far more complex than people realise or have ever been prepared to properly consider,' they added. Andrew's infamous 2019 Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis Andrew shared a lover with Jeffrey Epstein in Ghislaine Maxwell and also a mistress with Bill Clinton, with the prince and the president crossing paths through their friendship with Epstein. 'He was very flirtatious and a lot of women fell for that', Mr Lownie said. He has not named the woman he believes was having an affair with Andrew and Mr Clinton. He said: 'I know who the woman is. I can't say. But they, and Clinton of course, swam in the same same circles'. He went on: 'It was through Epstein that Prince Andrew met Donald Trump. 'The two things that they [Trump and Andrew] had in common was women and golf. They were very matey, though Trump has denied it since and tried to distance himself. There's plenty of evidence of them meeting together and being photographed'. Speaking to Palace Confidential host Jo Elvin, Mr Lownie lifted the lid on how being 'spoiled' by the Queen fed his breathtaking sense of entitlement over the past 65 years and left him with 'no very strict moral boundaries in his life'. The 'very lazy' Duke of York got a high-flying Oxford graduate to sit his naval college exams and even sent him a thank you note when he passed, Mr Lownie claims. Mr Lownie said that Andrew was later kicked off HMS Broadsword, which the prince served on in the Falklands conflict. 'Andrew ordered a stoking party to go and do some work in between watches in the middle of the night. He didn't go out and supervise it himself as he should have done. The chief stoker was so enraged by this that he actually went to Andrew's cabin and attacked him with with a heavy metal instrument. He added: 'The whole thing was covered up'. In 2022 the Queen stripped him of his HRH, military affiliations and royal patronages as the fallout of the Epstein scandal and a civil case brought against him by Virginia Giuffre, which he later settled for an estimated $16 million (£12million). Mr Lownie claims that Andrew feels no remorse. 'He generally feels he's innocent of anything he did with Virginia Giuffre and others. I think he just feels that that he's been unfairly treated and he's entitled to do some of the things he's doing', he said. The Epstein scandal came to a head for Andrew when he agreed to do a disastrous interview with Newsnight. But Andrew apparently said yes because Panorama were investigating him and he hoped Emily Maitlis would give him an easy ride. Mr Lownie said: 'The real story on the Newsnight interview is that actually it was Panorama who had done the work. 'They had done investigation. They'd interviewed a lot of people and they were giving the Palace a right of reply. 'At the same time Newsnight were also trying to get an interview and I think the Palace decided that it was better to have a what they thought might be a soft interview from Newsnight than to have this interview with Panorama. 'The BBC at times tried to suppress this Panorama investigation, possibly with pressure from the Palace'. In his book Mr Lownie reveals the depth of the Duke of York's breathtaking sense of entitlement including his dream to prevent Charles becoming King after his marriage to Diana failed and he planned to wed Camilla Parker-Bowles. Andrew is even alleged to have lobbied his own mother to allow Prince William to take the throne with him as his Regent in the event that she died. But Andrew's relationship with William is 'not good', Mr Lownie told Palace Confidential. He added that Harry 'still doesn't have much time' for Andrew, despite both being viewed as the royal 'spare'.
