Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game review – too cosy for comfort

After several hours toiling in the pastoral fields of Hobbiton, it finally started to sink in why two generations of Bagginses felt compelled to leave in search of dangerous adventure. Sure, the Shire has a hazy comfort to it, and there's plenty of unique food to gorge on and friendly faces to meet. But once the saccharine novelty begins to wear off, this bucolic wonderland is actually a fairly dull place to live.
Tales of the Shire is set in the Third Age of Middle-earth, years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. As such, there are no Nazgûls or Uruk-hai – instead the 'action' centres on the quaint town of Bywater, whose most pressing issue is its municipal status. Here, you play as a recent transplant from the nearby hamlet of Bree, who gets swept up in the process of turning the town into an official village by building infrastructure and befriending locals one odd job and home-cooked meal at a time.
Naturally this high-fantasy life simulator houses plenty of Tolkienian paraphernalia. You can find the Three-Farthing Stone nestled atop a hillside, and walk through the homely Green Dragon Inn. Plus, there are plenty of familiar surnames bobbing around, from Tooks to Cottons and Brandybucks – heck, even Gandalf pops his head in every so often. A chunky art style frames these iconic spaces and characters, coating the world with an appropriately twee veneer. It's not a huge map to explore, but what's there is tenderly dressed, with hanging washing swaying in the breeze, dinky lanterns, and roaming wildlife aplenty.
As an upstart Hobbit, your primary goal is to feed and be fed, with all aspects of day-to-day life revolving around this all-important activity. In the wild you can find veggies, nuts and fruits to forage, and the rivers are home to plenty of fishing spots where you earn your catch of the day. There are also seasonal seedlings to purchase and plant, as well as artisanal shop stalls offering speciality items such as flour. With each day running on a timer, the major source of friction is in how efficiently you can dash about and hoover up the goods before bedtime.
It's a well-trodden loop familiar to anyone who has played rural life sims such as Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon. But here, the steady flow of button clicks and undemanding chores operates more successfully as a sleep-inducing mental message than any form of compelling challenge.
If you can brave the repetition and invest in your relationships with others, the game begins to open up, providing a slew of formulaic but appetising skill paths to rank up. Collecting ingredients is only half the story; you'll also need to cook them up into satisfying bundles to serve at extravagant Breakfasts, Second Breakfasts, Elevenses, and so on. Combining elements of Cooking Mama and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tales of the Shire asks you to balance culinary profiles and textures to curate the perfect plate. To do this, you'll chop, mix and sauté ingredients while consulting a flavour compass in the bottom corner of your screen to ensure your food is as delicious as possible. Eventually, by feeding the right folks, your kitchen expands and there are more opportunities available to get you into the Middle-earth Michelin Guide.
But beyond its overly familiar mechanics, Tales of the Shire's most pressing problem is how naive and placid it all feels. When vague interpersonal issues arise between your new friends, they're always resolved in a swift, often mundane manner. Much of your time is spent running between frustrated halflings as they burden you with their petty dissatisfactions.
Not all cosy games need to evoke hard emotions. However, it does feel like a disservice to the emotionally complex source material not to explore the richness of the world at large – especially when dry humour, tragedy and finely drawn social structures are what make Tolkien's writing so powerful. Without any challenging quandaries to pull at your heartstrings, the promising atmosphere in Tales of the Shire is overwhelmed by endless fetch quests. Diehard Tolkienites and Stardew Valley lifers may be better off looking elsewhere for their cosy thrills.

Bonus: Episode 12 Episode 12 of The Sandman Season 2 begins with the environmental journalist, Sexton, trying to write a suicide note for Sylvie, his ex. He feels hopeless as the world is heading towards its inevitable end despite his best efforts. He is kicked out when his roommate, Billie, shows up with her girlfriend, Amelia. He goes out for a walk, and his woebegone argument is strengthened when he sees a collection of classic novels and memorabilia abandoned in a dump. As he goes through them, he trips and Death comes to his rescue. She invites him to her place to patch him up. He insists on learning the identity of his rescuer and gets creeped out when she is truthful. She explains that she takes a day off once every hundred years, spending a day as a mortal to stay in touch with humanity. Sexton tries to rush out when Hettie takes him hostage. She uses him to force Death into finding her soul for her. Death, who Sexton dubs as Didi, agrees and drags him along for her holiday on Earth. She is bubbly and enthusiastic which earns her free food and a free taxi ride, much to Sexton's shock. Next, she convinces him to go to Sylvie's regular club. They run into Billie, an annoyed Amelia and her friend, Jackie. Despite his cynical attitude, Sexton mediates between Amelia and Billie. Billie confides in Didi that Sexton is currently not in a good place and hopes he finds people who make life worth living. Sexton seems to have taken a big brother approach to Didi, who he thinks is a delusional and naive human girl, as he tries to protect her from Sylvie's thug of a friend, Theo. It seems that he doesn't approve of Sylvie and Theo for being irresponsible party animals. And in exchange, Theo and Sylvie would constantly look down upon Sexton. However, Didi insists on seeing the best in people and dances with Theo. Jackie joins Sexton, who sulks on the side. He is frustrated that no one cares that the world is ending and accidentally reveals that he is suicidal. She worries for him as she confesses to her suicidal attempt and that, despite everything, she is glad to be alive. A while later, Didi drags Sexton along for a club tour being given by Theo. It is a setup as Theo grabs her ankh necklace, locks the duo in a storage room and runs off. Didi sees a pentagon and realises that Theo summoned Death. Didi apologises for not listening to Sexton and for dragging him into the mess. He doesn't blame her and they talk about free will. She reveals that as an Endless, she doesn't have a choice. As a human, she does but she is upset that she messed up her one day of freedom. He feels bad for her and tries to come up with hilarious rescue plans. Right then, Theo barges in as the ankh doesn't work for him. He wants to bring back his girlfriend, Natalie, who died from an OD in his presence. Didi tries to comfort him but he decides to kill himself. Sexton interferes and barely misses the bullet. Theo survives and is taken away in an ambulance. The next morning comes and Didi tells Sexton that she needed to experience all that happened. They come across a jewellery stall by the river. For once, the owner charges her as she buys a pendant for Hettie. Sexton realises that he truly won't see Didi again and is sad. She declares that time goes too fast and it makes one hold onto every second. She begs for one more second but her heart stops. Hettie finds a tearful Sexton trying to bring Didi back to life. She puts the two cents that Didi had left on her eyes and takes the pendant. It does have her soul – a painting of her daughter. Before Hettie leaves, she promises Sexton that Didi will be back, 100 years later. At home, Sexton tells everything to Billie, who wonders if Didi is really Death. He thinks it would be nice if Death were a friendly face instead of pain and suffering. Amelia brings Jackie who wants to check up on him. She doesn't want to intrude but he deletes his suicidal note and offers her a cup of tea. At the end of The Sandman Season 2 Episode 12, Didi wakes up in Death's realm. She tells her Endless version that she loved mortality and doesn't want it to end. The Endless version smiles sadly as she offers Didi her hand. The Episode Review The Sandman Season 2 Episode 12 is a bittersweet epilogue that wraps up what has been a wild ride since 2022. There are tons of spin-off issues involving faes, supporting human characters, and other beings that could have led this special bonus episode but we are glad that it was Death's story. Kirby Howell-Baptiste has been perfectly cast for a fan-favourite character and she brings Death to life one last time. She is definitely main character material, dealing with dangerous challenges and slice-of-life adventures, likewise with a relaxed attitude. And who better to team her up with than Merlin- er, Colin Morgan as Sexton. His constant confusion but willingness to go with the flow that is Death is hilarious while educational. Every time the episode tries to get too didactic or contrived, there is a moment of absurdity that keeps it lighthearted and fun. This is evident when all the service providers are suddenly kind and altruistic to Death till the jewellery hawker charges her for the pendant. All in all, this special episode hits all the right notes and ends with a thoughtful message, just like all the arcs of the Netflix adaptation. Sexton is inspired by Didi and Jackie to keep going. Meanwhile, Didi aka Death reveals herself to be just like Dream and Destruction. She doesn't want her role as a reaper but she has no choice. Amazon's War of the Worlds update should never have been released

Since the publication of HG Wells's The War of the Worlds in 1898, the story of slug-like Martians invading Earth in clanking tripods has been retold in many shapes and forms. There was Orson Welles's notoriously realistic radio version, plus television shows, movies, video games and Jeff Wayne's prog-rock opera, with its feverish synth solos and mind-bending mullets. But no previous adaptation has extracted every trace of excitement from Wells's science fiction staple so thoroughly as music video director Rich Lee's appalling new War of the Worlds, which relays the action via the dull medium of Zoom cameras, phone streams and Google Maps read-outs. It is silly, shoddy and features far too much of rapper-turned-leading man Ice Cube staring at a computer screen while looking as if he's working through a reasonably urgent digestive ailment. Like a heat-ray in reverse, it leeches all the fun out of what should be an epic tale of alien invasion. As with the Martians in their mysterious cylinders, it has taken its time burrowing to the surface. This War of the Worlds was filmed during the pandemic, when studios were desperate to greenlight new projects. Hence, Cube's surveillance expert, Will, and a cast that also includes Eva Longoria as a hotshot Nasa scientist and Clark Gregg (The West Wing) as the director of Homeland Security, all filming their scenes alone, as Covid regulations intended. In addition to making Covid compliance more straightforward – and keeping the budget down – producers Timur Bekmambetov and Patrick Aiello wanted to follow the example set by Orson Welles by telling the story through the prism of modern technology. In 1938, it was radio. Today, it is social media live-streams and surveillance cameras, which is how Will watches the invasion unfold. 'It'll be exciting for audiences to watch the movie and ask themselves: if aliens invaded today, how would we experience it? Most likely, we'd be watching it on phones,' said Bekmambetov, who has previously produced social media found-footage films such as 2015's Unfriended. 'In that way, it's kind of a modern spin on Orson Welles's War of the Worlds. Back then, he used radio, the most popular technology of the time, to make people believe the invasion was real. Today, that medium is the screen of our devices.' It's a promising idea that War of the Worlds fails to do any justice to. Which is presumably why Universal Pictures let it rot on a shelf for four years before passing it off to Amazon Prime Video – rapidly becoming home to streaming's biggest collection of B-movies (its servers are stuffed with dross such as Slime City and Abraxas: Guardian of the Universe). In delaying the release, Universal and Prime have had the bad luck to have their movie coincide with the 20th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's superlative War of the Worlds. Though eclipsed at the time by star Tom Cruise's increasing eccentricity (this was circa his bouncing on Oprah's couch nadir), watched today, Spielberg's tilt at Wells is everything the sorry Ice Cube version is not. Spielberg's film is tense, spectacular and, in places, genuinely terrifying. For instance, the scene where the first Martian tripod emerges from beneath a street and starts zapping passersby explores America's post 9/11 traumas through the medium of alien invasion to stunning effect. By contrast, the only thing stunning about Cube's War of the Worlds is the fact that it has seen daylight. Unlike the seismic CGI of the Spielberg version, here the Martians and their tripods look like they were churned out on a shoestring (and possibly a Sinclair ZX81). Cube, for his part, is out of his depth as the moral heart of the film. Before the Martians arrive, he spends most of his time keeping tabs on his pregnant daughter (Iman Benson) and underachieving son (Henry Hunter Hall). He doesn't have the charisma to carry off the part of a dad who spies because he cares too much. Then, after the extra terrestrials gatecrash, he is reduced to shouting things like, 'Take your intergalactic asses back home!' all the time. There is an attempt at social commentary, with the Martians seeking not Earth's resources but humanity's data – handily stored on a central server in the middle of Washington, DC. This leads to an accidentally hilarious denouement in which Cube tries to beat a tripod to the access point, waving a memory stick over his head and huffing for all he is worth. (As if to hammer home how desperate this film is, at one point a character utters the words: 'I need you to place an official order on Amazon to activate the drone.') It's one of the most tragic things Prime has put on screen – and I say that as someone who had to watch its Mr Beast game show. Any aliens considering invading our planet will take one look at the new War of the Worlds and change their plans. Why bother making the trip when all humanity has to offer is five-star brain-rot with atrocious special effects?
