Amazon Prime fans have days to binge 'best sci-fi series in years'
Amazon Prime Video fans only have a few days left if they want to watch a show hailed by fans as 'one of the very best Sci-Fi shows' in a long time.
Ascension, which first aired in 2014 with six 45-minute episodes, will be leaving the streamer in just three days.
The synopsis on Prime reads: 'In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world.
'Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship's population to question the true nature of their mission.'
Despite just a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Ascension has delighted fans, with more people discovering the show in the years since it aired.
'One of the very best Sci-Fi shows I've seen in years. Every episode changes what you think is going on and reveals another layer,' wrote James Newton in a Google review.

He added: 'It does vear into fantasy a bit at the end, and possibly religion (but not in the traditional sense) but the bulk of the show is so good, it more than makes up for the ending. (sic)'
Another user, ömer ünal, compared it to The Truman Show, insisting while there were some 'good sociology ideas', they 'probably wouldn't have worked out that way'.
They added: 'Vintage look is awesome. Acting… not good in total, but most series are that way anyway. Should have had a second season. I liked it.'
Plenty of fans complained that the show ended without a satisfying ending, with Brian Schmidt warning in his Google review: 'Be careful… don't be like me and not know that they did not finish the series.
'It is a show that grabs your attention, and each episode leaves you wanting the next. The idea and premise of the show is very interesting. Again, be careful if you start, you won't stop until there is no more and you will be wanting more!'
User Chris Hanna praised the show as a 'great series', but they were 'very sad' there was only six episodes, given the 'interesting' subplots, adding: 'Great to watch on a rainy day when you just want to vedge. (sic)'
Another fan, with the username Just Me, was furious and being 'left hanging', as they urged someone to give the show new life.
'I think they should bring it back and at least finish out the series. Give us an ending,' they said. 'We need answers. So many shows have just stopped and left us all hanging in mid air.'
Sadly, in 2015 SyFy made it clear they wouldn't be looking into more episodes. More Trending
They said at the time: 'We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series.'
Ascension starred Battlestar Galactica actress Tricia Helfer as power broker Viondra Denninger, and Brian Von Holt as Viondra's husband Captain William Denninger.
Gil Bellows played Harris Enzmann, son of Ascension mission founder Abraham Enzmann, while Rescue Me's Andrea Roth appeared as the ship's chief medical officer Dr. Juliet Bryce.

ITV releases 'riveting' Amazon Prime thriller that's been compared to Severance
A 'whirlwind' thriller series that's drawn comparisons to Severance is now available to binge in full for free on ITVX. Released in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video, The Consultant was based on the book by Bentley Little and adapted for screen by Tony Basgallop (Inside Men, What Remains, Servant). The eight-part series starred Christoph Waltz as Regus Patoff, a mysterious consultant who comes to the rescue of CompWare, a mobile game studio based in downton Los Angeles, after the death of its CEO. After 'blowing into town' he takes charge of the company and leads with an unconventional management style. The series, which holds an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and this week dropped on ITVX, was largely well received by critics and fans, who praised its 'slick presentation and diverting twists'. 'The series defies all expectations while sucking you into the strange story,' USA Today wrote in its review. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'This bonkers comedy-thriller burnishes the familiar deal-with-the-devil conceit with chipper, unapologetic cynicism, and appealing performances from its trio of leads,' Entertainment Weekly said. 'Although the official website profiles for The Consultant present it as a dark comedy, it's actually quite horrifying and triggering, especially for people who've traversed the corporate minefield, thereby putting it squarely in the horror genre,' Digital Mafia Talkies shared. 'The Consultant is a bonkers show that is a psychologically twisted minefield,' added. Meanwhile viewers said it was 'bizarre', 'thrilling and dark' and an 'absolute whirlwind'. Although many compared it to Ben Stiller's hit Apple TV Plus series Severance, some said it didn't quite live up to it. 'Severance did everything The Consultant tries to do but far, far better: thriller-level fear of the workplace; a sinister, expanding something-is-going-on feeling; two employees who really need to just kiss each other, now, come on; and never quite knowing if the cause of all the weirdness is supernatural, sci-fi, or Other,' it explained. 'The Consultant, despite Waltz's immaculate lapel-straightening, never quite fills you with that confidence.' In an interview with ScreenRant, Tony spoke mixing the tone of the series, which blended horror and comedy. More Trending 'I think I was led, really, by the novel by Bentley Little,' he said. 'That had a very cruel sense of humour to it, a darkness that I always like to bring into my own work. So that was it really, I wanted to kind of match that style that he'd created, and it felt like we were a good fit. 'He's a very dark and twisted individual, and I enjoy kind of adding my dark, twisted nature on top of his dark, twisted nature. So, we were building on each other there.' The Consultant also stars The Stand's Natt Wolff and The White Lotus' Brittany O'Grady. View More » The Consultant is streaming on ITVX and Amazon Prime Video. Got a story? Sir David Attenborough almost killed by faulty scuba diving equipment
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Sir David Attenborough has detailed an unsettling incident in which he nearly drowned when scuba diving. The natural historian and broadcaster, 99, first appeared on screens in the 1950s, when he presented natural history programmes including Coelacanth and Zoo Quest for the BBC. His TV credits now span eight decades, with Sir David since presenting shows including Wildlife on One, The Blue Planet and Planet Earth, as well as the newly released film Ocean. However, he's now recalled a moment early in his career when he came close to a deadly situation. Speaking to Prince William at an event to promote his new documentary Ocean, Sir David was presented with an open-circuit helmet. Picking it up and putting it on his head, he spoke about testing a scuba diving outfit while filming on the Great Barrier Reef in 1957. 'When I put mine on for the first time I suddenly felt water and thought, 'this can't be right'. But by the time the water got about there I thought, 'I'm sure this is not right',' he said. 'Of course, you've got this thing screwed on top of you and you can't breathe or make yourself heard. I was saying 'get it off me'.' Sir David then spoke about the director leading the documentary initially refusing to take his concerns seriously. 'He grabbed it and said it was fine, but I again said there was a fault, and he put it on, and I'm happy to say, he went underwater and came up even faster than I did, because there was actually a fault on the thing,' he added. During the discussion Sir David also described his first dive as a 'sensory overload' and commented on how the reefs he first visited decades ago had now been devastated. 'The awful thing is that it's hidden from you and from me and most people,' he said. 'The thing which I was appalled by when I first saw the shots taken for this film, is that what we have done to the deep ocean floor is just unspeakably awful.' 'I mean, if you did anything remotely like it on land, everybody would be up in arms. If this film does anything, if it just shifts public awareness, it'll be very, very important, and I only hope that people who see it will recognise that something must be done before we destroy this great treasure.' The pair spoke as part of the promotional launch for Ocean, which sees Sir David 'drawing on a lifetime of experience to reveal Earth's most spectacular underwater habitats, showing that we're in the greatest age of Ocean discovery and highlighting its vital importance'. Sir David said he hoped the film could 'expose something new' and encourage viewers to act to save the destruction of the ocean. Despite his indelible impact on the world and environmentalism, last year his producer Mike Gunton told Metro Sir David hated being called a 'national treasure'. More Trending 'He hates it, by the way,' he said. 'I say hates it… If anybody says he's a national treasure, he sort of slightly raises his eyebrows and says, 'Really?' That's a generational thing.' When it was noted Sir David's work is of far greater importance than a title, Mike responded: 'You've hit the nail on the head.'
