Hollywood pair had 'great chemistry' in 'emotional' film which led to decade-long relationship

Daily Mirror18-07-2025
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth met as teenagers while starring in the heartbreaking film The Last Song, which saw the young couple fall in love on screen and in real life
Nicholas Sparks ' heart-tugging novels have been the blueprint for some of the most beloved romantic comedies of the 2000s, not least the cinematic rendition of The Notebook, sparking off-screen romances along the way.

This was certainly true for a certain high-profile pair who crossed paths as youngsters portraying a blossoming romance on screen, simultaneously kindling their own. Chart-topping sensation Miley Cyrus and silver screen heartthrob Liam Hemsworth first locked eyes on the set of the poignant drama The Last Song.

Debuting in 2010, the film charts the turbulent journey of a defiant young woman named Ronnie, who relocates to live with her estranged father, portrayed by Greg Kinnear, following her parents' split. The move takes her and her brother from the hustle of city life to the serene coastal town where her dad resides.

Throughout the story, Ronnie mends fences with her family and rediscovers herself, all while falling head over heels for a local lad. Her innate piano skills come to the fore, encouraged by her father's past as a Juilliard-trained musician, as she strives to mend their fractured bond, despite time running short.
A Rotten Tomatoes critique applauded the movie, saying: "An emotional and romantic coming-of-age story, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth make a couple with great chemistry, and the credits song When I Look At You is one to cry to. A great adaptation."

The on-screen romance that captivated audiences wasn't quite the fairytale behind the scenes, reports the Express, with the couple experiencing several break-ups over their decade-long relationship. In 2012, fans were thrilled to hear about the engagement of the young stars, but by 2013, wedding bells had been silenced, and it looked like it was all over.
The film's allure was undoubtedly boosted by the palpable chemistry between the leads, surprising many viewers with Cyrus's commendable acting chops. One review admitted: "I'm not a big fan of Miley Cyrus, but I have to say she did an outstanding job in this."

Tear-jerking warnings accompany mentions of the film, as one viewer shared: "The Last Song tugged at my heartstrings and drained my eyes of tears. I just don't get why a lot of people don't like this movie when it's got such a beautiful and heart-wrenching story." Emotions ran high for another fan who confessed: "I cried when I read the book two years ago, and so did I when I watched the movie two minutes ago. Hands down, this movie is amazing."
Against all odds, Cyrus and Hemsworth secretly wed in 2018 after rekindling their romance, yet the reunion was short-lived; they divorced in 2019. Both have since found new love away from the spotlight.
Nostalgic fans often look back fondly at the early days of what became a real-life romance, while some viewers remained oblivious to the off-screen drama unfolding before them.
A cinema enthusiast commented: "I'm not a fan of Miley Cyrus, but in the film I was enchanted by her character. The Last Song is a very romantic and emotive film, which I like to watch. The plot of the film has a great reflection of real life."

Comedy hailed as 'the best show on TV right now' is cancelled after 4 seasons

A hilarious comedy with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score has been canceled after four seasons. Resident Alien first premiered in 2021, with Superman star Alan Tudyk leading the cast alongside Linda Hamilton, Nathan Fillion, Michael Cassidy and Sara Tomko. The cult classic sci-fi series airs on USA, and is also available to stream on Netflix in the UK. It is based on the comic book of the same name, following alien Harry after he crash lands in a small town in Colorado and befriends the locals. Unfortunately for his new pals, it turns he's actually on a secret mission to kill everyone on Earth, but is forced to blend into his surroundings by pretending to be a doctor. Although the fourth season is currently unfolding on our screens, TV bosses have confirmed that the upcoming episodes will be the last. Creator Chris Sheridan spoke to TV Insider about the show coming to an end, explaining: 'I knew going into it that this was likely going to be our final season. 'Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending. 'I'm so proud of how good season four is and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favorite episode of the series.' That finale is set to air on August 8, meaning there isn't too long to wait to see how Harry and the gang end up. Alan reacted to the news on Threads, posting: 'It was a hell of a fun playground to play in. Laughter through the tears:))).' Resident Alien currently claims a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes – with seasons two and four landing perfect 100% rankings from critics. Heaping praise on the program, Zack S commented: 'The best show on TV right now!' More Trending 'I've rewatched this show many times and it still makes me laugh,' Bildad T agreed. Diana R hailed: 'This is my favorite show by far!! I could and do watch all seasons on repeat. 'The humor and acting are top notch! Looking forward to more seasons!!!' View More » As Elizabeth C added: 'Resident Alien is scifi humor at its best. Sometimes shows like this diminish as the seasons go on, but I was exceedingly happy to see that Season 4 is just as good as the previous seasons.' Got a story? Original Happy Gilmore cast now as long-awaited sequel airs on Netflix

Happy Gilmore 2 finally lands on Netflix as fans get another glimpse of Adam Sandler's iconic character Happy nearly 30 years later. Happy Gilmore 2 has finally landed on Netflix, with comedy lovers gearing up to watch the long awaited sequel this weekend. Adam Sandler reprises one of his most iconic roles, stepping back into the shoes of the wild ex-hockey player who discovers an unexpected talent for golf. ‌ Nearly 30 years after the original, the sequel finds Happy grappling with a sudden tragedy that pushes him to pick up golf once more - this time to support his daughter Vienna (played by Sunny Sandler) as she chases her dream of becoming a dancer. ‌ Packed with plenty of cameos and laughs, the movie hasn't yet received a Rotten Tomatoes score but is sure to delight fans of the first film, the Mirror reports. ‌ With many original cast members returning for cameos, let's take a look at what the stars have been up to over the past two decades. Adam Sandler The legendary comedian Adam Sandler starred in the original comedy and of course returns for the sequel as the washed-up hockey player turned golfer. ‌ Almost 30 years later, the 58-year-old Sandler has become one of Hollywood's most successful comic actors, staring in hits like The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, Click and Grown Ups. He has also expanded his range with acclaimed dramatic roles in films such as Punch-Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and Hustle, along with lending his voice to Dracula in the popular Hotel Transylvania animated series. Away from the spotlight, Sandler has been married to Jacqueline 'Jackie' Sandler since 2003. The couple has two daughters, Sadie and Sunny, both of whom have appeared alongside their dad in the coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah as well as Happy Gilmore 2. ‌ Christopher McDonald Christopher McDonald is widely recognised by fans as Happy's fiery rival, Shooter McGavin, a role he reprises in the sequel. His career also includes notable appearances in films such as Thelma and Louise - where he starred opposite his former fiancée Geena Davis - Leave It to Beaver, Requiem for a Dream and The House Bunny. ‌ Off-screen, McDonald has been married to actress Lupe Gidley since 1992, and the couple has four children: three daughters and a son. Julie Bowen Julie Bowen played Happy's love interest, Virginia Venit, in the original Happy Gilmore and has since become a household name for her role as Claire Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family. ‌ She portrayed Claire for over a decade, earning six Primetime Emmy nominations and winning two awards. Bowen returns for Happy Gilmore 2 and, off-screen, married real estate investor and software developer Scott Phillips in 2004. The couple has three sons, but Bowen filed for divorce in February 2018, citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce was finalised later that September. Frances Bay ‌ Legendary Canadian comedian France Bay played Happy's grandmother in the original Happy Gilmore and become a beloved screen icon with memorable roles in shows like Happy Days, The Dukes of Hazzard, Cheers and Seinfeld. Following the first film she went on to star in the likes of Charmed, Grey's Anatomy and The Middle as well as films like Stranger than Fiction and The Wedding Planner. Unfortunately, Bay will not be appearing in Happy Gilmore 2 as she passed away at the age of 92 in 2011, due to complications from pneumonia. ‌ Allen Covert Allen Covert, a longtime collaborator of Sandler, played Otto, the homeless man who eventually becomes Happy's caddy in the 1996 film. He returns for the sequel, having also co-starred alongside Sandler in hits like Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer, Anger Management, and 50 First Dates. ‌ Covert has been involved in nearly all of Sandler's projects, either as a supporting actor or producer, and has announced plans to launch his own production company aimed at bringing R-rated comedies back to the big screen. He married Kathryn Ashley Hagstrom in 2006 but filed for divorce in 2019. Richard Kiel Known as the 'Gentle Giant' for his towering height of 7 feet 1.5 inches, Richard Kiel famously portrayed the James Bond villain Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker. ‌ He also played Happy's intimidating boss, Mr. Larson, in the original Happy Gilmore film, but sadly will not appear in the sequel. Kiel passed away from heart disease on September 10, 2014, just three days shy of his 75th birthday. Kiel was married to Faye Daniels from 1960 to 1973, and then married Diane Rogers in 1974. They remained together until his passing, raising four children and welcoming nine grandchildren during their 40-year marriage. Ben Stiller ‌ A-list comedy star Ben Stiller played an uncredited role as the abusive elderly Hal, who torments Happy's grandmother in the original Happy Gilmore. Since then, Stiller has become internationally known for his roles in Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, Meet the Parents and the Night at the Museum franchise, as well as more dramatic parts in While We're Young, The Meyerowitz Stories and Brad's Status. In addition to acting, Stiller has directed several of his most iconic films, including Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. More recently, he has earned praise for directing episodes of the acclaimed Apple TV+ sci-fi drama Severance. ‌ Outside of his career, Stiller has been married to actress Christine Taylor since 2000. The couple, who have co-starred in multiple films, briefly separated in 2017 but reunited while living together during the COVID-19 pandemic. They share two children, a daughter, Ella, and a son, Quinn. Carl Weathers One of the most beloved characters from the original Happy Gilmore is Carl Weathers as Happy's coach, Chubbs Peterson, who famously lost a hand to an alligator. ‌ Weathers is also well-known for playing a fictionalised version of himself on Arrested Development. Before venturing into comedy, he earned fame for his iconic role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series, as well as portraying Colonel Al Dillon in the original Predator alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. In recent years, Weathers made a major comeback starring as Greef Karga in the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination. Happy Gilmore 2 pays frequent tribute to Weathers, who sadly passed away last year at the age of 76 from suspected atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. He was married three times and is survived by his partner of ten years, Christine Kludjian.

Downton Abbey star shares 'distinctive' change in third movie as filming 'rule' broken

The Downton Abbey franchise will come to a close with the Grand Finale later this year, which marks the final film in the franchise Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to arrive in cinemas in the coming weeks, and Elizabeth McGovern has disclosed what viewers can anticipate from the movie. ‌ It represents the third and concluding film in the Downton Abbey series, which will witness numerous beloved stars from the programme return to their characters for one final time. ‌ Elizabeth, 64, has disclosed that circumstances were altered on set during this production, with one particular regulation being abandoned. ‌ She explained how the new movie features some spontaneous acting, which had been strictly prohibited previously. "Most of the time, there was an absolute rule that not one syllable could ever be changed," she told Deadline. "Which, in a way, gives it its distinctive flavour." ‌ The forthcoming picture also represents the first Downton Abbey film without Maggie Smith, who portrayed Violet Crawley. The actress tragically died in September 2024, reports the Express. Maggie's loss was profoundly experienced amongst the ensemble, yet Elizabeth disclosed that the movie still succeeds in capturing the enchantment of Downton Abbey, where Maggie's spirit continues to linger. "She permeates everything, definitely," Elizabeth said. ‌ The performer, who portrays Cora in the beloved series, contemplated collaborating with the identical crew for more than ten years, with the inaugural episode of Downton Abbey having broadcast in 2010. She said: "You can't help but feel a real attachment," before confirming it is "definitely" the end of Downton Abbey. ‌ Despite her confidence, she did mention: "Unless they do something like go back in time and it's a different cast. You know, the young Maggie. There's been quite a lot of that sort of talk." Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will see Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter and Joanne Frogatt reprising their roles. New additions to the cast include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan.
