Zahid heads to Geneva for UN disaster summit
The Foreign Ministry (MOFA), in a statement today, said Ahmad Zahid is accompanied by senior officials from MOFA, the Deputy Prime Minister's Office and the National Disaster Management Agency.
'The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver Malaysia's National Statement at the eighth GPDRR. He will be speaking at a ministerial roundtable session on the topic of 'Safe Schools Now: Protecting Every Child from Disaster and Climate Risk',' it said.
'The Deputy Prime Minister will reiterate Malaysia's continued commitment to disaster management through the launch of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy, the implementation of the Safe School Programme and the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Programme as well as through the introduction of a Disaster Risk Reduction education programme,' it added.
While in Geneva, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, is also scheduled to meet the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Kamal Kishore.
'The meeting is aimed at exploring potential areas of collaboration between Malaysia and international partners on disaster risk management,' according to the statement.
The GPDRR is a platform for assessing progress made by United Nations member states on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
Malaysia is a pioneer member of this network and remains unwavering in its commitment to managing and pre-empting disasters in line with the 2030 National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy. — Bernama

Swiss say would grant Putin ‘immunity' for peace talks
GENEVA, Aug 19 — Switzerland would grant Russian President Vladimir Putin immunity if he came to the country for talks on peace in Ukraine, despite the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant, it said today. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis told a press conference that, under certain circumstances, he would be allowed to set foot in Switzerland. Last year, the Swiss government defined 'the rules for granting immunity to a person under an international arrest warrant. If this person comes for a peace conference—not if they come for private reasons', Cassis said. French President Emmanuel Macron raised the possibility of a peace summit between Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky being held in Europe, in 'a neutral country, maybe Switzerland'. 'I'm pushing for Geneva,' he said in an interview aired earlier Tuesday on French news channel LCI. Cassis said Switzerland was fully prepared to host such a meeting and highlighted the militarily-neutral country's long expertise in the field. However, he pointed out that Russia had gone cold on Switzerland, which has decided to match the sanctions imposed by the neighbouring European Union since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Cassis said he had 'constantly reiterated this willingness' to organise such meetings during his contacts with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over recent months. 'I was told that since Switzerland adopted European sanctions, they have naturally lost some of the desire to do so in Switzerland,' he added. Cassis mentioned the precedent of last month's Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, a three-day gathering convened by the Geneva-based Inter-Parliamentary Union. Switzerland permitted Russia's participation, with Valentina Matviyenko, president of the upper house of Russia's Federal Assembly, attending despite international sanctions. Switzerland said it acted in accordance with law and international agreements. Swiss authorities may authorise exemptions from travel restrictions, 'notably if the person is travelling to participate in an international conference,' a Swiss foreign ministry spokesman told AFP at the time. Putin last visited Geneva for his June 2021 summit with then president Joe Biden. The most recent bilateral talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul. Saifuddin: Over 100,000 foreign construction workers untraceable after legalisation scheme
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — A total of 100,646 foreign workers holding Temporary Work Visit Passes (PLKS) in the construction sector failed to be detected after the foreign worker whitewashing programme implemented by the Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd (CLAB), according to the Home Minister. According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, the government will implement measures and punitive actions against employers and foreign workers in the construction sector who commit offences under existing regulations. 'They come in, they hold the construction sector PLKS, but when whitewashing is carried out by CLAB, we cannot find any impact. If they misuse the passes, we will take action according to the offence. 'If their passes have expired, they should have signed a check-out memo and left the country. If they do not leave the country, we will track them down,' he said. He said this at the press conference of the Joint Committee Meeting between the Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Human Resources, Steven Sim, on the Management of Foreign Workers today. According to Saifuddin, the matter was revealed following a presentation by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) during the meeting. 'We will see what Act they violated and punitive action will be taken,' he said. Previously, he was reported to have said that applications for foreign worker employment quotas are now only allowed on a case-by-case basis involving three main sectors and 10 selected sub-sectors.
