AMC job scam: Appointments of 8 more terminated, police plaint likely

Time of India17 hours ago
Ahmedabad: An ongoing investigation by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) into a recruitment scam that first came to light in Dec last year has revealed that eight more candidates had secured jobs through fraudulent means.
The appointees include an assistant surveyor, a sub-inspector, three assistant sanitary sub-inspectors, a pharmacist, and two female health workers.
The municipal commissioner on Thursday issued an order to terminate all eight. A police complaint will be filed against them. Pulkit Sathwara, a senior clerk and DTP operator at AMC's central office, who was found guilty of fraud following the 2024 fraudulent appointments, also faces a fresh police complaint, AMC officials said.

The lid on the scam was first blown in Dec 2024 when it was found that marks of three unsuccessful candidates, including two women, were altered in the final selection list for 93 positions of technical supervisor in the engineering department, leading to their fraudulent appointments.
When recruitments to the engineering department began, a total of 12,377 applications were received for the 93 positions, with 5,955 candidates writing the exam.

After a Gujarat High Court directive, a revised final answer key was published.
A staff selection committee chaired by the mayor on Oct 5, 2024, created a merit-based selection of 93 candidates who were appointed as assistant technical supervisors on a probationary basis on Oct 9, 2024.
During this period, an applicant filed a complaint with municipal commissioner M Thennarasan, alleging that marksheets of some selected candidates had been tampered with and that their appointments were based on fake merit scores.
Investigations revealed that the marks in the results provided by Gujarat University (the agency) based on the revised final answer key did not match the merit marks of some appointed applicants, indicating fraud and tampering. Sathwara was suspended after being found guilty of his role in manipulating the marks and a police complaint was filed against him.
AMC's investigation committee then reviewed the selection lists of 2,786 candidates and the waiting lists of 1,316 from over 37 different recruitment drives conducted between May 2023 and Oct 2024.
The exams were conducted by GU, IIT-Gn and IIM-A.
This probe revealed names of eight more employees appointed on false merit scores.

K'taka CM visits blast site in Bengaluru, says cause to be determined after debris clearance

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the blast site at Srirama Colony in Bengaluru's Chinnayyanapalya and stated that the exact cause of the explosion will be determined once the debris is cleared. A boy was killed and several others were injured in the explosion reported from the limits of the Audugodi police station on Friday. The incident caused panic among residents, as people were busy with Independence Day celebrations. Speaking to reporters after the visit, CM Siddaramaiah announced that the government will provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the family of the deceased boy. He also declared that the medical expenses of the nine injured persons will be borne by the government, and the damaged houses will be repaired and rebuilt by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The CM stated, "Today, a tragic incident took place. At first glance, it seems like a cylinder blast. However, there was no smell. The police and forensic reports indicate that it might be a cylinder blast." He added, "Sleuths from the Forensic, Fire, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) departments are investigating the cause of the explosion. Once the debris is cleared, the exact cause will be ascertained. Based on their findings, we will proceed further. Prima facie, it appears that the explosion was due to a cylinder blast." "This is an area with many small houses where people live in close proximity. I have directed the Chief Commissioner of BBMP, Maheshwar Rao, to ensure the damaged houses are repaired immediately. About nine people have suffered injuries, and one death has occurred. A 10-year-old boy, Mubarak, who resided in the neighbouring house, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital," Siddaramaiah informed. "The explosion took place at the residence of Kasturamma. She is currently being treated at Victoria Hospital for 30 per cent burn injuries. Fifty-year-old Narasamma and 35-year-old Sabrina Banu have been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital," he stated. "Other injured persons include Fathima, Pramila (38), and Rajesh (40) at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital; Kayala at Indira Gandhi Hospital; Subramani (62) at Agadi Hospital; and Shekar and Nazeed Ulla (37) at NIMHANS. The government will provide compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased boy, Mubarak, and will cover the medical expenses of the injured," the CM announced. "The expenses of Kasturamma, the owner of the house who suffered 30 per cent burn injuries, will also be covered by the government. About 13 houses were damaged, and we will ensure they are repaired immediately. The houses that have collapsed will be rebuilt," CM Siddaramaiah added. The explosion reportedly occurred at the residence of Kasturamma, a resident of Srirama Colony. Mubarak lived in the neighbouring house. The blast was so intense that the roof of Kasturi's house collapsed, and about eight nearby houses suffered damage. Many residents had left for work early in the morning, which likely prevented further casualties. Locals stated that some have been grievously injured. The Fire and Emergency Services and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the scene. A woman recounted, 'I was downstairs. At 8.15 a.m., we heard a huge explosion, and a stone hit my head. I screamed and got up, and by that time the roof had collapsed. We ran out of the house. My house is only four feet away from where the explosion occurred. The sound was tremendous. An iron cupboard, which normally requires four people to lift, was thrown up. If it were a cylinder blast, there would have been a smell, but there was none.' She added, 'I don't know what caused the explosion. It seemed more like a bomb blast. We were preparing to fetch water when the explosion occurred. We rushed out of our houses; otherwise, we would have been more harmed.' Another resident stated, 'My wife's head is swollen. I am still feeling the pressure from the incident.' The Audugodi police have registered a case and are carrying out further investigation.

Home Minister will make statement in both the Houses on Monday over alleged Dharmasthala mass burials, says Dinesh Gundu Rao

Home Minister G. Parameshwara will make statements in the two houses of State Legislature on Monday (August 18) over alleged Dharmasthala burials. The statements will reveal several facts related to the ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the case, said Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in Mangaluru on Friday. Taking to reporters after the district-level Independence Day programme at the Nehru Maidan, the Minister said the SIT was set up following demand by several people, including former Supreme Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda, Pattadhikari of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala and left wing activists. The dispassionate inquiry by the SIT will reveal the truth behind the serious allegation made by the 50-year-old former sanitation worker. Asked about the interview given by the complainant, who is protected under witness protection scheme, to a national news channel on Thursday, wherein he revealed names of people who joined in burying bodies with him and also made new allegations against Dharmasthala temple administration, Mr. Rao said the SIT will definitely look into the veracity of his allegations and take necessary legal action. The State government and the police were behaving responsibly with regard to the case. 'Our intention (in setting up SIT) was to bring the truth out'. Whether the SIT will continue with the excavation in new sites with only one skeletal remains being found in one of the 17 sites that were excavated so far, the Minister said Mr. Parameshwara's statements will reveal further steps to be taken up by the SIT. The SIT, he said, has done a good work in the case. The government was keen in collecting evidence related to the complaint and it will not keep answering to speculative reports on the case. The SIT will also look into the likely conspiracy to defame the Dharmasthala temple and temple administrators in this case. Reacting to the call by BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra to his party legislators to assemble in Dharmasthala on Sunday, Mr. Rao it was not surprise to see the BJP taking political mileage from this sensitive matter, Mr. Rao said.
