AMC job scam: Appointments of 8 more terminated, police plaint likely

Ahmedabad: An ongoing investigation by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) into a recruitment scam that first came to light in Dec last year has revealed that eight more candidates had secured jobs through fraudulent means. The appointees include an assistant surveyor, a sub-inspector, three assistant sanitary sub-inspectors, a pharmacist, and two female health workers. The municipal commissioner on Thursday issued an order to terminate all eight. A police complaint will be filed against them. Pulkit Sathwara, a senior clerk and DTP operator at AMC's central office, who was found guilty of fraud following the 2024 fraudulent appointments, also faces a fresh police complaint, AMC officials said. A staff selection committee chaired by the mayor on Oct 5, 2024, created a merit-based selection of 93 candidates who were appointed as assistant technical supervisors on a probationary basis on Oct 9, 2024. During this period, an applicant filed a complaint with municipal commissioner M Thennarasan, alleging that marksheets of some selected candidates had been tampered with and that their appointments were based on fake merit scores. Investigations revealed that the marks in the results provided by Gujarat University (the agency) based on the revised final answer key did not match the merit marks of some appointed applicants, indicating fraud and tampering. Sathwara was suspended after being found guilty of his role in manipulating the marks and a police complaint was filed against him. AMC's investigation committee then reviewed the selection lists of 2,786 candidates and the waiting lists of 1,316 from over 37 different recruitment drives conducted between May 2023 and Oct 2024. The exams were conducted by GU, IIT-Gn and IIM-A. This probe revealed names of eight more employees appointed on false merit scores.
