5 takeaways from the New York Jets' 31-12 preseason loss to the Giants
It did not go according to plan.
The Giants kept at it and earned a 31-12 win over the Jets.
As the score indicates, it was not the prettiest day at the office.
With that, here are Jets Wire's five takeaways from the loss to the Giants:
Fields takes a step back
It was likely a move to keep confidence high after Week 1, but the Jets pulled quarterback Justin Fields after only one series in their preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. Fields played well then.
Against the Giants, it was a different story. Fields did not look particularly great and his numbers show it. Fields was an ugly 1-for-5 passing and only gained four yards in the air.
Rushing attack was better
On the bright side for the Jets offense, the rushing attacked fared well. After a tough Week 1, Breece Hall churned out 26 yards on seven. A split of carries between Hall and Braelon Allen continued against the Giants as well with Allen averaging 4.9 yards per carry (7 carries, 34 yards).
Overall, the rushing attack continues to be the focal point ahead of Fields as well.
Secondary got burned
In what was a pass to the goal line, the Jets' secondary got burned by Giants quarterback Russell Wilson. On the plus side, cornerback Sauce Gardner did not play and certainly would have made a difference in this one (or any game) he misses.
Interesting Arian Smith night
On the stat sheet fourth-round rookie Arian Smith did not do much that stood out. On six targets, he only had two catches for 39 yards.
But Smith still was a bit impressive. There were a few circumstances that went against him, such as bad throws or miss penalties.
Not a great look for Aaron Glenn
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn did not look good in this moment.
Ahead of halftime Glenn was interviewed. He was not happy and called his team "sloppy" in the first half. Turns out, Glenn's message did not work at halftime. Hopefully that's not a foreshadowing of things to come.

He spent three years at Boise State University, and in 2024, he abused opponents to the tune of 2,601 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns. That prolific production earned him his second Mountain West (MW) Offensive Player of the Year award, as well as MW Male Athlete of the Year award, the Maxwell Award, the Doak Walker Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The 21-year-old is undersized for the tailback position in the NFL at 5-foot-8, but he's extremely difficult to tackle thanks to his speed, quickness and shiftiness. Some scouts and experts even compared him to Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, the San Diego Chargers legend who set an NFL record with 28 rushing touchdowns in 2006.
