Goa govt says no new permits for ‘Rent a Cabs'
Goa govt has directed the state transport authority (STA) to stop issuing new licences and permits under the Rent a Cab Scheme, 1989.
Exercising powers under Section 67(1) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the notification issued on Tuesday, said the move aims at preventing overcrowding and enhancing road safety across the state.

had reported earlier this year that the decision to stop issuing fresh permits was taken on Feb 24, 2024, at a meeting of the state transport authority.
Transport director Pravimal Abhishek had issued a public notice in March asking applicants not to submit any new applications for Rent a Cab permits as 'such applications will not be processed' at this stage.
The public notice was issued a day after the directorate of transport announced a crackdown on unauthorised private vehicle operations as Rent a Cab services in Goa, wherein offenders will face a fine starting at Rs 10,000, with repeat violators subject to heavier penalties.
Abhishek said that the authorities will impound private vehicles that are used for commercial purposes and may also lead to the cancellation of the vehicle registration. Enforcement agencies were asked to conduct regular checks and crack down on illegal Rent a Cab operations.

They have confessed to having done it before, too. We will contact victims and get more details,' he said. Officials now believe this may not be an isolated case. The gang allegedly used dating apps as a hunting ground. Authorities are urging anyone who might have encountered similar situations to step forward. For the techie, the ordeal is over. But the emotional scars and the chilling idea that a friendly match could turn into a trap are likely to stay for much longer.

Harish questions delay in extending aid to Sigachi blast victims
Hyderabad: Senior BRS leader T Harish Rao on Monday alleged that the families of Sigachi blast victims were yet to receive the promised Rs 1 crore ex gratia. The former minister, along with the victims' families, led a rally to the Sangareddy district additional collector's office and spoke to the official about the reasons for the delay in disbursing the compensation to the kin of the victims. He demanded Rs 50 lakh as compensation for those grievously injured and Rs 25 lakh for others injured. He also submitted a representation on behalf of the victims' families to the additional collector Chandrasekhar Badugu. Later, addressing the media, Harish Rao said that although the company announced it would disburse the ex gratia to the victims' kin within 15 days, there was no response from either the firm or the govt. He said that 14 people were still undergoing treatment in various hospitals, and only Rs 50,000 was paid to each of the injured. ‘Mastermind' of Rs 1.10cr Delhi burglary held in Balasore
Balasore: Delhi Police on Monday arrested a man from Nilagiri area in Balasore district for alleged involvement in the burglary of over Rs 1.10 crore from a builder's residence in the national capital. The accused, Kashinath Mallik (32), of Bhimei village under Iswarpur police outpost, was nabbed after he fled to Odisha with a substantial share of the stolen cash. Police sources said Kashinath, who was employed as a cook at the builder's residence, conspired with two other individuals from his village — Ashutosh Mallick (27) and Jagabandhu Mallick (30) — both working as domestic help in the same house. The trio allegedly committed the theft and planned their escape to Odisha with the money. The case began to unravel when Ashutosh was arrested at Delhi railway station while trying to flee. Shortly after, Jagabandhu was apprehended at Patna bus stand with Rs 45 lakh. Following their interrogation, police found the location of Kashinath's hideout. A Delhi Police team reached Nilagiri and arrested Kashinath from Bhimei. During the operation, officials recovered Rs 30.5 lakh from him. IIC of Nilagiri police station, Gobardhan Nayak, said, "Kashinath was the mastermind of the burglary. He orchestrated the entire plan and roped in the two other accused to carry out the theft." He added that Kasinath was produced before a local court, after which he was taken on transit remand by Delhi Police.
