
I took my Nintendo Switch 2 on a trip for the first time — here's 3 things I loved and 2 I didn't
I've just returned from my first trip with the Switch 2 in tow, and have come away once again seriously impressed with Nintendo's next-gen handheld/home console. However, the experience of going abroad with the Switch 2 has also further highlighted some of its frustrating flaws.
So, here's my first experience taking Nintendo Switch 2 on a trip, the good and the bad.
The Switch 2 is bigger in every way than its predecessor. The larger 7.9-inch display takes all the attention, but the LCD screen is wrapped in an equally beefier plastic shell, and frankly, I love the larger size. As a Steam Deck OLED convert since last winter, I'm now used to larger handhelds, and by the end of the generation, the Switch 1 was feeling uncomfortably small in my palms.
So, when playing the Nintendo Switch 2 for longer periods, such as on a four-hour flight, my fingers were thanking the designer for the larger Joy-Con 2 controllers and overall size. I still prefer playing with a Nintendo Pro controller, but at least now the Joy-Con 2s don't feel entirely designed with small, child-sized hands in mind. Oh, and the magnetic connectors are still fantastic. It's a huge upgrade over the old railing system, and a breeze to snap on and off.
Speaking of detaching the Joy-Con 2s, the Switch family of systems continues to offer a feature that few handhelds can replicate: Tabletop Mode.
Even if the Nintendo Switch 2 is significantly more comfortable to hold in handheld mode compared to its predecessor, you can take your play experience up a level via Tabletop Mode, letting you prop up the main console unit via the built-in kickstand and give your arms a proper rest.
As somebody who never upgraded to a Nintendo Switch OLED (I stuck with my launch unit till the end), which had an improved flexible kickstand already, I've found the Switch 2's adjustable stand a real revelation. And tabletop mode also proved very useful for playing two-player Mario Kart World on a flight.
I've seen more than a few grumbles about the library of available software on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. You don't have to search social media far to find people arguing, 'Switch 2 has no games,' but I just don't believe this mocking statement matches up with reality.
Yes, I will concede the Switch 2 is lacking in exclusive software, with only Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour offering experiences you can't get anywhere else, but the roster of third-party ports and excellent upgrades to must-play Switch 1 games is nevertheless very healthy at this early stage.
I had a great time on my trip chipping away at my latest playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has completely hooked me all over again after leaving it mostly untouched after wrapping up my original run back in the spring of 2017.
Plus, Mario Kart World, for all my issues with its focus on rally races over traditional three-lap courses, is still the perfect pick-up-and-play title, and I enjoyed a quick race or two while waiting for my gate number to be called.
There's just no sugarcoating this one, the Nintendo Switch 2 battery life sucks.
I had a four and a half hour flight as part of this trip, and was reaching for a power pack before we were even halfway to our landing destination.
The battery life is so underwhelming that traveling with a portable charger or having access to in-flight charging is practically a necessity if you want to take the Switch 2 to 30,000 feet. Anything beyond a quick domestic journey, and the Switch 2 isn't going to touch down with any juice left.
I noted the poor battery life as an issue in my Switch 2 review, but the problem really comes into focus when you're traveling and can't always easily connect to a reliable power supply.
Having also taken my Steam Deck OLED on various trips in recent months, I felt the Switch 2 did not stack up well in the battery life department. And if the Switch 2 gets a mid-gen refresh, the battery life needs to be boosted.
Okay, so technically this is an issue I encountered prior to my trip, specifically the night before, as I was installing games to play on my vacation, but I just do not quite understand what the deal is with Switch 2 download speeds.
Naturally, I have my Nintendo Switch 2 hooked up to the same Wi-Fi connection as the rest of the gaming consoles (and tech devices) in my house. While on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X, I'm able to download 50GB in about 30 minutes, my Switch 2 needs several hours to download a quarter of that.
Heck, the evening before my trip, I went to download a new update for Hitman: World of Assassination, and while it was a ludicrously huge 112GB update, my Switch 2 informed me that it would take more than 130 hours to complete. That's less than a gigabyte downloaded per hour!
A quick search tells me I'm far from the only one experiencing this issue, and while various user fixes are currently floating around, none have entirely resolved the seriously slow download speeds for me. I'm just hoping this is a patchable problem and not something faulty within the hardware itself.

Whether it's to preserve history, introduce new players to long-lost gems, or simply make these games accessible without sketchy emulators and ancient hardware, there's a strong case to be made for bringing them back. Super Smash Bros. Melee redefined what a platform fighter could be and remains a title that sees competitive tournaments worldwide, over two decades after its launch. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has certainly perfected the series, but Melee is an absolute classic that deserves to be celebrated without having to dig through sketchy ROMs or have access to a GameCube. Adding Melee to Nintendo Switch Online would be more than nostalgic fan service — it's a preservation of gaming culture. While Nintendo has never prioritized online play for Switch Online titles, the game flourish with official support and rollback netcode. Please, Nintendo. Long before New Horizons became a global phenomenon, the original Animal Crossing introduced players to a charming real-time world. While newer entries in the series have refined the formula, the GameCube original still offers a uniquely cozy, slower-paced experience. Its regional quirks, NES game emulation, and surprisingly witty villager dialogue give it a nostalgic charm modern versions can't fully replicate. Plus, many longtime fans never got to play the original, making it one of Nintendo's most inaccessible classics. While Mario Kart World is being praised for its massive multiplayer and open-world gameplay, I'm still dreaming about the innovative two-character kart from Double Dash. One player drove while the other managed items, adding a strategic layer that no other Mario Kart title has replicated since. A one-of-a-kind installment and a couch co-op classic, this would be a top title if added to Switch Online. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures is one of the franchise's most inventive—and most overlooked—entries. Up to four players controlled different colored Links, working together (or sometimes against each other) to solve puzzles and defeat enemies, making it one of the most chaotic Zelda titles ever made. Back in the day, full multiplayer gameplay required players to own a Game Boy Advance and a link cable to connect to the GameCube. For this reason, not many people have truly experienced the game the way it was meant to be played. A Switch Online version could scrap that hardware requirement, letting players tackle the adventure locally or online without the extra barrier. Four Swords Adventures is practically begging for an updated release in today's hyper-multiplayer space. If you tried to explain Viewtiful Joe to someone who wasn't there when it launched in 2003, they'd think you were making it up. It blended fast-paced 2D beat-'em-up action with a slick comic book aesthetic and clever time-bending mechanics. Joe was starring in his own superhero movie, with slow-motion 'VFX' powers that turned each battle into a stylish, strategic spectacle. While Viewtiful Joe was critically acclaimed, it has faded away to video game history over the years and is in desperate need of a revival, even just on Switch Online. This third-party gem would be an absolute hit for Switch owners looking for a little something outside the norm to dive into. Star Fox Adventures has one of the weirdest backstories in Nintendo history. It started out as two separate N64 64 projects—an action adventure sequel to Star Fox 64 and something called Dinosaur Planet, which was owned by Rare—before the two ideas were morphed together and pushed to the GameCube. The result was a full-fledged 3D action-adventure, blending Zelda-style exploration with the Star Fox universe's colorful characters and lore, on a planet full of dinosaurs. The story is surprisingly in-depth, the puzzles and fighting are challenging, and we loved giving Fox McCloud a chance to stretch his legs instead of being cooped up in a ship all day. This title is a hidden gem, and Star Fox is a Nintendo character that doesn't get enough attention these days. A new life on Switch Online would be a brand-new adventure for the series. Wario World may not be the most famous title in Nintendo's catalog, but it's one of the most charming oddities from the GameCube era. It gave Mario's greedy, mischievous rival his own 3D action platformer — blending beat-'em-up combat, puzzle-solving, and treasure hunting into a uniquely Wario-flavored adventure. The arcade-inspired levels were filled with over-the-top boss battles as Wario pocketed as much treasure as he could find. There's been absolutely no news of a new Wario game outside the popular WarioWare party series, so we should at least give this lovable villain a chance to shine on Switch Online. Developed by Sega, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is one of the most creative platformers of its era, if not all-time. The premise is equally odd and epic: a boy in a chicken suit rolls giant eggs through vibrant levels, hatching creatures, solving puzzles, and battling enemies in a quest to save Morning Land from eternal darkness. Intrigued? Playful, weird, and surprisingly deep, this is one of those quirky titles that has never gotten a sequel. A new life on Switch Online would give nostalgic players a chance to revisit this wacky game and new players an intro to a weird era of gaming. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc built on the charm of its predecessors while injecting a more cheeky tone and fast-paced combat. Its sarcastic dialogue, fourth-wall-breaking humor, and memorable characters (like the fan-favorite bouncy amphibian Globox) gave the game a unique identity that stood out from other platformers. They just don't make snarky games like this anymore. Rayman is one of those IPs that has always lived just under mainstream gaming and Switch Online would be a great place to introduce this oddball installment of the series. Tak and the Power of Juju is one of the mst underrated 3D platformers of the early 2000s, embodying the core of the GameCube era's quirky experimental spirit. This game stood out for its lush environments, puzzle-centric level design, and a distinct sense of humor rooted in Nickelodeon's signature style (it even spawned a full animated series later on). Set in a mystical jungle world where Tak, a young shaman's apprentice, must wield the power of nature spirits, the game blended traditional platforming with magical powers and environmental interactions. The adventure was full of creative ideas and wacky antics, making it a cult favorite.

After a month with the Switch 2, I can't fully recommend Nintendo's new console
We're still firmly in the honeymoon period with the Switch 2 right now. Most of us are still exploring Mario Kart World's open world for secrets or wondering if Welcome Tour was worth the $10 price tag. With Donkey Kong Bananza arriving just in time to beef up the exclusive catalogue with a new 3D platformer, I found myself conflicted with my time with the console so far. I don't mean personally; I am in love with this piece of tech. What is trickier is when others ask me whether or not I think they should pick one up. One month into the system's life, there's a lot to love already, but not without some caveats. Consoles only get more enticing as they age, so adopting one early essentially means you're investing at its least appealing time. There are plenty of people I would recommend a Switch 2 with no conditions, but I would say the majority of gamers are better off waiting. Should you make the switch (2)? No conversation about purchasing a Switch 2 can begin with anything but the system's price and library. Honestly, the price point might be the easiest factor for me to square. $450 isn't cheap, but we've entered a new era where hardware doesn't go down in price anymore. In fact, it is far more likely to get more expensive as time goes on. The second-hand market will always exist, but that's a roll of the dice. If you're hesitant about getting the system on price alone, this might be the best offer you get. At best, you could get a slightly better deal in the future on a bundle, but we can't rely on a price drop happening after a year or two anymore. Recommended Videos The launch library is where I think the most interesting conversation can be had. After all, a game console is nothing without games, right? This is where the nuance comes in when recommending the Switch 2. Everyone knows about Mario Kart World, and it really is as great as everyone makes it out to be. I was a little down on the open world aspect, but have since come around on it once I took it on its own terms. This is easily a game Switch 2 owners can expect to keep coming back to for the entire generation, just like Mario Kart 8. I can't agree with the complaints that there's nothing else besides Mario Kart World at launch on the Switch 2 since it is categorically false, but I understand what people are trying to say here. The real complaint is that there's not much else that you couldn't have played elsewhere already. And that's a valid concern. For some, treating the Switch 2 as a Mario Kart machine for a month or two is fine, knowing that there's plenty more in the pipeline, but I'd be remiss in saying that applies to everyone. If you want a wide swath of new experiences on the Switch 2, you'll be sorely disappointed right now. And then there's the existing Switch library that is playable on Switch 2 with some big improvements. The Switch 2 is an instant recommendation for anyone who skipped the original Switch. Even the games without proper Switch 2 editions, like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, are demonstrably better on Switch 2 to the point where I wish I could experience them for the first time on this hardware. I can almost argue that even if you have played all the best Switch games already, it is worth it to replay them on Switch 2. While a bit nebulous to levy as a full complaint, I can't ignore the fact that the Switch 2 has yet to give me an experience that is unique to it. Your mileage may vary on how important that factor is to you, but I think Nintendo shines brightest when it takes big swings. The Wii's motion controls and the original Switch's hybrid system changed the way we engaged with games and the ways they could communicate with us. The Switch 2 has that potential, most notably with the new mouse controls, but no game takes advantage of it in a big way right now. In that regard, the Switch 2 is simply a better Switch. That's all a segment of the audience asked for, so it might be enough to convince you, but I find it creatively stale this early compared to past Nintendo efforts. The Switch 2 has the most momentum and potential of any Nintendo hardware. It came out strong in its first month, but also played it very safe. I can easily say it is worth it to anyone who sees a couple of titles you missed out on or want to replay on the go or that take advantage of the Switch 2's increased power, but if Mario Kart World is the only game that intersts you right now, waiting isn't such a bad idea. Come this fall and winter, when the system is packing Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends Z-A, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the script would be completely flipped. The more time goes on, the easier it will be to recommend the Switch 2, but after one month with the system, you have to make that judgment call for yourself.
