Amit Shah pays tributes to those who suffered during Partition, says Congress divided nation

On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Mr. Shah said it is an occasion to express condolences by remembering the pain of those who suffered due to the Partition of the country.
"On this day, the Congress party divided the nation, hurting the pride of Maa Bharati. The Partition led to violence, exploitation and atrocities, and millions of people endured displacement.
"I offer my heartfelt tributes to all those people. The country will never forget this history and pain of the Partition," the Minister said in a post on X in Hindi.
The Modi government has been observing August 14 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' since 2021 in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the country's partition.
While making the announcement about Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the day would be observed in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of people as the pain of the Partition can never be forgotten.
Mr. Modi also noted that millions of people were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence caused by the Partition.
Through the Partition, British India was divided into two independent countries: India and Pakistan.
India will celebrate its Independence Day on Friday.

NEW DELHI: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should either give a declaration under oath within seven days on his allegations of irregularities in the voter list, else his 'vote theft' claims would be rendered baseless and invalid. Addressing a press conference, the CEC said that if anyone wishes to file a complaint without being a voter of that constituency, it can be done only as a witness under oath. Levelling allegations of "vote chori", Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had on July 31, through a presentation at a press conference, cited data from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to claim that over 1 lakh votes were "stolen" in Mahadevapura assembly segment in Karnataka through five types of manipulation, including duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, single-address voters. He had also alleged similar irregularities in other states. The chief electoral officers of several states had asked Gandhi to file an affidavit under oath on his claims, but Gandhi has refused to do so. "Should the EC issue notice to 1.5 lakh voters without declaration under oath by the complainant," CEC Kumar said on Sunday in response to queries on Gandhi's allegations. 'If no declaration under oath given within 7 days, claims will be considered baseless and invalid…,' he said, adding that those making unfounded allegations should apologise to the nation. The sun continues to rise in the east and not elsewhere just because someone says so, the CEC quipped, stressing that neither the EC nor the voters are scared of the allegations of double voting and "vote chori". However, Gandhi again questioned the EC's response to his allegations. Addressing a gathering in Bihar's Sasaram at the launch of his 1,300 km 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' on Sunday, Gandhi said that while he was asked to submit an affidavit after his press conference "exposing vote chori", no such demand was made from BJP leaders who made claims in their presser. The Yatra is part of the opposition INDIA bloc's stepped-up attack against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and on the allegations of 'vote chori' raised by Congress.

Jagan should apologise to nation for not hoisting national flag, demands Nara Lokesh
Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh on Sunday demanded that former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy apologise to the nation for skipping the hoisting of the national flag on Independence Day. He termed the action of the YSRCP leader as an insult to the country's freedom struggle. "Skipping the flag hoisting of our tricolour on Independence Day is not just arrogance, it is a deep insult to our country's freedom struggle," Lokesh posted on the social media platform 'X'. Lokesh, who is the general secretary of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, said Jagan should apologise to the nation. The TDP has already criticised Jagan Mohan Reddy for not hoisting the national flag on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day. Senior TDP leader and Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy sought to know why Jagan, despite being the president of a political party, failed to recognise the significance of Independence Day. "Why so much arrogance," asked the former minister in a post on 'X'. The TDP leader asked Jagan if he did not remember the day when lakhs of people sacrificed their lives to achieve independence for the country. "Just because you are frustrated with the Pulivendula ZPTC result, do you forget a national festival? This is a black mark in your political life," posted Chandramohan Reddy. Another senior leader and Ponnur MLA, Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar, accused Jagan of insulting the national flag. He alleged that Jagan humiliated freedom fighters by not unfurling the national flag. "The defeat of the YSRCP in Pulivendula ZPTC byelection may be the reason for Jagan's frustration. However, abstaining from hoisting the national flag reflects his mental condition," Narendra Kumar said. YSR Congress party suffered defeat in the by-elections to Pulivendula and Ontimitta Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) in Jagan's home district of YSR Kadapa.

CEC hits back at Rahul Gandhi's charge, says 'baseless allegations can't override law'
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday issued a strong rebuttal to allegations questioning the credibility of the Election Commission of India (ECI), indirectly countering remarks made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged irregularities in Karnataka's Mahadevapura constituency and in Maharashtra Assembly elections. Addressing a packed press conference at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, the CEC underlined that the ECI functions under a strict legal framework laid out in the Representation of the People Act (RPA), and political parties or candidates have enough legal recourse to raise objections during the electoral process. 'Every candidate has the right to appoint polling agents, whose lists are already submitted to the polling stations. If a wrong person tries to cast a vote or if someone attempts double voting, polling agents can immediately object. After counting, the Returning Officer declares the results. If anyone has grievances, the law is very clear – you can move the Supreme Court within 45 days to challenge the election,' the CEC explained. Without naming Rahul Gandhi directly, Kumar said that making accusations months after results are declared, without due process, undermines public trust. 'When 45 days have passed and no party or candidate has challenged the results, what is the aim of levelling baseless allegations now? The public understands this,' he said. The Congress leader had earlier alleged that nearly 1 lakh votes were 'manipulated' in the Mahadevapura seat in Karnataka, a claim the ECI has strongly denied. Kumar also detailed the grievance mechanisms available to political parties and citizens. 'Under the RPA, any elector of the constituency can file a complaint by filling Form 6, 7 or 8. Even Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of political parties have the right to submit 10 forms each to the Booth Level Officer. But this requires a sworn oath. If you are not an elector of the constituency, the only way is to submit your complaint as a witness, supported by an oath administered before the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO),' he said. Asserting that the ECI is a small team of about 800 officials backed by a nationwide administrative machinery, Kumar emphasised: 'From Chief Electoral Officer in every state to officers at the booth level, the entire system is prepared to ensure free and fair polls.' The CEC's remarks come at a time when the opposition has sharpened its criticism of the Commission ahead of crucial elections in Bihar.
