59L attend Amader Para camps to solve local civic issues
Kolkata: The state govt's Amader Para Amader Samadhan (APAS) camps reached a total footfall of 58.9 lakh on Wednesday, within a fortnight of the programme's launch. Waterlogging, cleaner tap water, road repairs, and street lights were among the primary issues raised during the camps held so far in Kolkata. Lunch on Aug 2, the programme will continue until Nov 3. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had earmarked Rs10 lakh for developmental work in each booth, and overall Rs8,000 crore for the entire programme. The footfall on Wednesday was 6.3 lakh in the 828 camps held. So far, 9,392 camps have been held across the state. Moreover, around 30,000 camps will be held in the most remote areas of the state. For every three booths, one camp will be organised. Monalisa Banerjee, Trinamool councillor of Ward 49 of KMC, said that in Sealdah, people visiting the camps mostly wanted better water supply. There were also complaints of potholes in the roads, she said. Monalisa said she proposed setting up a public address system in the booths so the citizens can be alerted in case of any deluge or emergency situation. The microphones will be fitted in light posts. "The people can also be informed of immunisation programmes or voter or Aadhar card enrolment programmes through the public address system," she said. Gasification tech a mismatch for India's high ash content coal: Niti
New Delhi: The Niti Aayog has flagged the issue of incompatible gasification technology for the high ash content coal available in India, saying the on-ground progress on coal gasification has been limited despite issuance of letters of award. The government's think tank will soon hold discussions with stakeholder ministries as well as domestic and international experts to select the technology best suited for gasification of Indian coal to support commercial scale and viable deployment. NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat has written to coal secretary Vikram Dev Dutt, highlighting the challenges being faced by the public and the private sector in coal gasification and seeking the views of the coal ministry to firm up the roadmap. In 2024, it launched the ₹8,500 crore viability gap funding scheme to support coal and lignite gasification projects. Following this, it issued letters of award to companies including Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals, Coal India , Jindal Steel and Power , New Era Cleantech Solutions and Greta Energy. "Not much progress has taken place so far in terms of actual on-ground deployment of the project majorly due to selection for right coal gasification technologies and robust business models around it," the letter said. Live Events The Aayog is of the view that it is essential to match gasification technology design to feedstock properties for stable operations, energy efficiency and economic viability. Indian coal has high ash content, ranging from 30-45% and a high alumina-silica composition owing to which many global technologies available are unsuitable for gasification of Indian coal without adaptation. Coal gasification is expected to help India achieve energy security and self-reliance, reducing dependence on imports of natural gas, methanol, ammonium nitrate and other products. Coal gasification technology enables conversion of coal into synthetic gas, which can be used to produce downstream products such as methanol, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas and fertilizers.

Gig workers' welfare needs urgent attention from states and businesses
The gig economy has been in India since around 2010, when food delivery and ride-hailing platforms arrived. But a regulatory mechanism to ensure security for gig workers has remained conspicuous by its absence across India. So far, Rajasthan is the only state with a regulatory mechanism for gig workers with its Rajasthan Platform-based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Act, 2023. The Karnataka Bill now has to pass through the legislative council to become an Act and benefit four lakh workers in the state. The gig economy has emerged as a key employment generator globally. According to Niti Aayog's estimates, India's gig sector had 77 lakh workers in 2020 and is expected to triple to 2.35 crore by 2029-30. The sector's growth has drastically shifted work practices over the last few years. It has led to new issues relating to employment, to which employers and business membership organisations have responded within a regulated framework in many countries. The regulatory landscape and various aspects of worker welfare in the gig economy are still nascent in India. The need of the hour is for institutions like business organisations to take up a greater role in shaping social dialogue and organising efforts to address the challenges faced by gig workers.
