Navy Marine Corps Relief Society launches Active Duty Fund Drive
The program will allow for sailors and marines to take out loans at 0% interest for either emergency expenses or in times of financial struggle.
'Essentially loan them money that other service member has donated selflessly to help them out of that financial hardship,' Richard O'Rawe, Director of Norfolk Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. 'And then, you know, as they repay us, we're helping the next sailor or marine that walks in the door that has a financial need.'
This year, the fundraising goal is set to $1 million, which is a bout a 330% increase from 2024.
'Put that million dollar goal in perspective, that's $5 from each of you,' Adm. Daryl Caudle, Commander of U.S. Fleet Forces said. 'And so, if you just donate $5 and contribute, that will crush our goal this year.'
To reach the goal, active duty members are being asked to consider donating a portion of their paycheck, but anyone is able to donate to the Navy Marina Corps Relief Society.

Fire at Newport News car dealership under investigation
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Newport News Fire Department is investigating an overnight fire at a car dealership. Firefighters responded to a commercial structure fire at Southern Acura Newport News, located in the 12000 block of Jefferson Avenue, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions at the commercial building. They then contained the fire and successfully brought it under control. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. It's official! Trader Joe's is coming to Town Center
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – It's official! A second Trader Joe's grocery store is coming to Virginia Beach. The company posted on its website that it is opening a store in Town Center, at 220 Constitution Drive. It's going in the former Bed, Bath & Beyond site, in Columbus Village. In January, Armada Hoffler confirmed it found tenants to fill the space, but wouldn't say who they were. Then, in February, WAVY obtained a copy of an ABC liquor license application filed by Trader Joe's for this location. There is no opening date yet for the new Virginia Beach location. Trader Joe's said it will continue to post updates on the new store at this link. Norfolk International Airport breaks record for most travelers in a single day
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After being named the best domestic airport in the country, Norfolk International Airport is now celebrating another win: the largest-ever number of travelers to go through the airport in a single day. On Sunday, July 6, 11,522 people got on a plane at Norfolk International. A majority of those travelers were returning home after spending their Fourth of July holiday in Hampton Roads. President and CEO of the Norfolk Airport Authority Mark Perryman said that around this time last year the airport didn't record more than 10,000 in a single day. 'Success breeds success at the end of the day,' Perryman said. 'So, we're growing because the region's growing. There's a reason why we have airlines wanting to serve more destinations here. It's because there's a demand here.' The increase in the number of travelers is leading to physical growth of the airport. Perryman outlined to 10 On Your Side all of the projects in the works, which include extending the departures terminal, a new state-of-the-art rental car facility, a new federal inspection services building, a hotel and a new hanger for private aircrafts. 'We are at the beginning of, a probably about a five-year window of major overhaul of this airport.' Perryman said. 'You're going to see a lot of 'pardon our dust' please be patient with us.'
