Around 89 per cent of train tickets being booked online: Rail Minister
He responded to questions regarding recent initiatives related to digital reservations and deactivation of crores of dubious User IDs by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation
"With a view to curb malpractices in the ticket booking system, IRCTC has recently deactivated over 2.5 crore user IDs, as their credentials were found to be suspicious during extensive data point analysis," the Railway Minister said.
He added, "On Indian Railways, the demand pattern of reserved accommodation is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. The trains running on popular routes and convenient timings are generally well patronised. However, in other trains, accommodation is generally available."
Vaishnaw presented various steps taken by the Ministry to improve passenger access to confirmed tickets, ensure transparency and proliferate digital modes.
"Reserved tickets can be booked either online or across computerised Passenger Reservation System counters on a first cum, first-served basis. Presently, around 89 per cent of total tickets are being booked through online mode," Vaishnaw said.
"At PRS counters, the facility of making payments through digital modes has been provided. With effect from 01-07-2025, tickets under the Tatkal Scheme can be booked through the website of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation /its app only by Aadhaar-authenticated users," he said.
He said that agents are barred from booking opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the opening of Tatkal reservations.
Vaishnaw stated that the waiting list position of the trains is monitored on a regular basis, and in order to cater to additional demand, Indian Railways operates special train services and augments the load of trains to generate additional accommodation, subject to operational feasibility.
"Further, schemes like Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme , known as VIKALP and Up-gradation scheme have been introduced to provide confirmed accommodation to waitlisted passengers and also to ensure optimal utilisation of available accommodation," he added.

The Finance Ministry has informed Rajya Sabha that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took up 5,892 cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) since 2015 and secured the conviction of 15 people from these cases during the period. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply: 'In these cases, 1,398 Prosecution Complaints (PCs), including 353 Supplementary PCs have been filed before the respective Special Courts under PMLA. Out of which, so far, the Special Courts have framed charges in 300 Prosecution Complaints including 66 Supplementary PCs and the PMLA Special Courts have convicted 15 persons in eight conviction orders in these cases till June 30.' The minister said that the ED has filed closure reports before the special PMLA court in 49 of the total cases. I am pleased to report that building on this momentum, in FY- 2024-25, 775 new PMLA investigations were launched, 333 PCs were filed, and notably, 34 individuals were convicted,' he said.

Ludhiana: Residents across Ludhiana faced inconvenience on Friday as employees of 41 Sewa Kendras went on strike over delayed salaries and unexplained deductions. The protest, which lasted from 9am to 3pm, disrupted services at key centres, including the mini secretariat, where hundreds of applications are processed daily. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The employees, hired on contract by a private company, alleged that their June salaries were paid only on July 29, and even then, Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,200 had been deducted without explanation. Gurpreet Singh, president of the Sewa Kendra Union, Ludhiana, said that the strike was a result of repeated delays and lack of transparency. Each day, the Mini Secretariat Sewa Kendra handles 400 to 500 applications, while other centres process 100 to 150 applications. With counters unmanned during the protest, thousands of applications were left pending. By evening, the protest was called off after the company assured employees that salaries would be paid by August 10, and the deducted amounts would be reimbursed. Employees resumed work following the assurance. Meanwhile, residents visiting the centres were left frustrated. Mandeep Singh from Haibowal, who came to apply for a bank-related document, said his time and travel expenses were wasted. Atma Singh, who needed to renew his driving licence, also returned disappointed. Another applicant, who took leave from work to correct Aadhaar details, said that his leave was wasted as the centre was non-functional. Employees expressed concern that the pressure would continue even after the strike, as the civic body pushes to meet property tax targets and other deadlines. MSID:: 123046557 413 |
