Building Pune: Pune Metro to expedite work on extended route from PCMC to Nigdi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of this 4.413 km-long extended stretch in March last year, but the actual work began only five months later.
'The construction of the extension stretch from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi began in August last year, and the civil work is going in full swing. The deadline for completing work on the stretch is 36 months from the start of actual work, but we are planning to complete it in 30 months,' said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Pune Metro Rail.
Sonawane said the administrative processes for laying overhead cables on the track and the mechanical work of installing escalators and lifts have begun even before the completion of civil work. 'We don't want to waste time on completing the administrative process for the works related to the stretch, so it has been done well in advance,' said Sonawane.
The route from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi is elevated and has three stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi.
The estimated cost of the extended route is Rs 1,048.22 crore, which covers expenses on development of intermodal integration, stations, pedestrian bridge, system and tracks, environment impact assessment, design, depot and parking on the route.
The 17.4 km Metro route from Swargate to PCMC has been made operational and has received positive response from the public. This route has been extended from PCMC to Nigdi on one end and Swargate to Katraj on the other end. However, the construction on the extended underground route of 5.5 km from Swargate to Katraj is yet to start even though it is expected to be completed by February 2029 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,954.53 crore.
Additionally, the second route, measuring 15.7 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi, is also fully operational. Last month, the Central Government approved its extension on both ends — connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. These two extended elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, linking fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 3636.24 crore.
Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing the Metro Line-3, which will span 23 km from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar District Court. This line is expected to start operations by March 2026.

EV startup launches three-wheeler designed for delivery drivers
Vaidyuthi Mobility, an electric vehicle (EV) startup, has rolled out EV Gully100, a three-wheeled electric vehicle designed for delivery drivers who hold only a two-wheeler licence. It is the first such vehicle on Indian roads, taking advantage of new regulatory changes that allow electric three-wheelers in this category to be operated without a commercial LMV-3 licence. India's delivery fleets rely heavily on two-wheelers for small loads and larger autorickshaws for heavier cargo. Gully100 aims at addressing the delivery of cargo in the range of 50-km to 400-km, which accounts for a significant portion of urban delivery demand, thereby minimising the overloading of bikes or underutilisation of expensive vehicles. 'We are building a category that did not exist before. Most delivery operations today are stuck between too small or too big. This gives them a third option — one that fits the job,' said Raj Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Vaidyuthi Mobility. The EV uses a dual-motor setup designed for high torque and better traction, especially under full load. The suspension has been built in-house and includes an adaptive system meant to handle uneven city roads. According to the company, its new cabin layout is the most spacious in its class and is designed for longer shifts. The battery offers a real-world range of 120 km on a single charge. 'This is one of the safest and most affordable electric three-wheelers we've ever built,' said Hari Vasudevan, co-founder and CTO of Vaidyuthi Mobility. 'We didn't just optimise for price. We looked at what the Indian delivery workforce actually needs on the ground — from terrain and load to comfort and driver access.' The Gully100 also brings in a set of safety features including Tilt Guard, a system that helps prevent the vehicle from rolling over, especially on uneven roads or sharp turns. There's also an active swing arm and an electronic differential, both of which work together to keep the ride stable and responsive under load. Vaidyuthi Mobility has also developed what it calls the world's first Breathe & Adapt air suspension, built to adjust on the fly to potholes, shifting weight, or rough terrain. According to the company, the vehicle is also eligible for State and Central EV incentives.

India's average cost of data breach now highest in the world: IBM report
The average cost of an organisation for a data breach has risen 13% to Rs 22 crore in 2025 from Rs 19.5 crore in the year-ago period, according to a report released on Thursday. However, despite the surge in costs, the security in artificial intelligence is still lacking, the report by global tech major IBM said. Phishing, or the act of sending fraudulent communication to extract personal information, is the top attack vector, with the usage in 18% of incidents, followed by third-party vendor and supply chain promises at 17%, while vulnerability exploitations accounted for 13%. The research sector in India faced the highest impact from data breaches, with average cost reaching Rs 28.9 crore, closely followed by the transportation industry at Rs 28.8 crore and the industrial sector at Rs 26.4 crore. Amid the widespread use of AI, it said nearly 60% of the breached organisations either don't have an AI governance policy or are still developing a policy. Organisations are bypassing security and governance for AI in favour of do-it-now AI adoption, the IBM report said."While AI is being rapidly embedded across business operations, security and governance are being left behind. The absence of access controls and AI governance tools is not just a technical oversight; it's a strategic vulnerability," Viswanath Ramaswamy, vice president, technology at IBM India and South Asia, company has come up with the 'Cost of a Data Breach Report' for the last two decades, and has investigated nearly 6,500 data breaches for the same. The average breach lifecycle, which is the mean time to identify and contain a breach, including restore services, dropped from 15 days to 263 days in India in 2025, it said.
