It is hard to believe that the Master Tournament ended almost two weeks ago, as Rory McIlroy ended his major championship drought.
His victory left a mark on the golf world, as it is rare for someone to achieve the career grand slam. Celebrities and fellow golfers congratulated him after his big win.
McIlroy defeated Justin Rose in a one-hole playoff, but instead of sulking, the Englishman's wife, Kate, made sure to stick around and congratulate the winner.
She was waiting for him at the clubhouse, embracing the five-time major champion for a full 13 seconds.
"I'm really, really happy for you," Kate said to McIlroy as she hugged him, while the latter let the tears flow.

He embraced her right after Shane Lowry wrapped him in a bear hug. These are the people who have seen McIlroy struggle under pressure the last 11 years.
McIlroy knows the Rose's well. From the many Ryder Cups and years on Tour, these two European families are close, so it does not come as a surprise to see her be one of the people to celebrate him.
It is the second straight major championship that Rose finished in the runner-up position. Last year, the golf world saw how emotional he got at the Open Championship when he came up short, so one had to think Rose would be in a similar predicament at Augusta National.
He could have congratulated him and moved on, but Rose knows McIlroy well, so once the tournament officially ended, it was more about celebrating his friend.
It shows what kind of people Kate and Justin Rose are and how there are far more important things than golf.

Rory McIlroy, 36, Reflects on Underappreciated Value Ahead of Genesis Scottish Open

Rory McIlroy, 36, Reflects on Underappreciated Value Ahead of Genesis Scottish Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Media activities are officially underway ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, where Rory McIlroy once again finds himself under the spotlight. Advertisement In his Wednesday press conference, McIlroy touched on a theme he believes is underappreciated across all sports: longevity. "I think it's one of the underappreciated things about any sport and anyone, like you look at what Novak Djokovic is doing at Wimbledon over the last couple of weeks, or what someone like Cristiano Ronaldo is still doing at 40 years old, or a Tom Brady in American football. That longevity piece, I think, is something that maybe isn't talked about enough because once you get to a certain level… it takes just as much work, if not more work, to stay there." He added that adapting his game as he ages has become critical to remaining competitive against younger stars such as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Advertisement Since turning professional in 2007, McIlroy has amassed a significant number of professional victories, including 29 on the PGA Tour and 19 on the European Tour. He's captured five major championships in that time, including the U.S. Open (2011), The Open Championship (2014), PGA Championship (2012, 2014) and most recently, the Masters Tournament, a win that completed the career Grand Slam. McIlroy previously won the Scottish Open in 2023, finished fourth in 2024, and he is one of the favorites to win this year's title. Phil Mickelson Claims He 'Owned Tiger Woods,' Named Putter Tiger Slayer

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are two of the most well-known names in the history of modern professional golf. Throughout the early 2000s, those two guys were the faces of the PGA Tour. Now, Mickelson is a LIV Golf captain, and Tiger is taking on more of a leadership role as injuries continue to limit his competitive golf. Grant Horvat, the social phenom and avid golfer, posted a golf match video with Mickelson, squaring off against Bryson DeChambeau and Garrett Clark. During the round, he noticed Mickelson's putter cover and its name. "You actually have Tiger Slayer written on your putter cover," Horvat said. Mickelson chuckled and said, "Sometimes the truth hurts." ⛳️🐅🗡️ #WATCH: Phil Mickelson tells the tale of how his putter got its name: 'Tiger Slayer' and claims he and Tiger Woods are essentially tied when playing head to head. (Via: @GrantHorvatGolf) — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) July 9, 2025 The camera cut to DeChambeau and Clark chuckling. "He has Tiger Slayer on his putter, that's funny — That guy's a madman," DeChambeau said. Mickelson then asked Horvat if he wanted to know how the flat stick got its name, and of course, the YouTuber was all ears for Lefty's story. He claimed it was from the 2012 AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach. Mickelson earned his 40th career PGA Tour event that week, but the name came from the final round when he battled Tiger for the victory. "We went out and played. I used that putter. I made everything. I shot 64, he shot 75, and that's where it initially slayed the Tiger," Mickelson explained. From there, Horvat wanted to know if the putter continued to help the six-time major winner achieve success. Most know what kind of opponent Tiger Woods was during that time frame, and so did Mickelson. "He owned me the first half of our careers," Lefty explained. "His record against me head-to-head was dominant." Photo byfor The Match Then he made a bold claim about his and Tiger's head-to-head record. "The second part, I owned him," Mickelson continued. "After 2007 I started working with Butch [Harmon] and I started doing really well head to head. Our head-to-head record when we were paired together —I believe it's dead even." Lefty's claim is not as accurate as he would like you to believe. But he made sure to give props where they were due. "It is now even when we play together," he noted. "His record is his record. He's the greatest of all time. I've seen him do things with a golf ball that I've never seen anybody be able to do. His play in 2000 was indescribable, how good it was." Was Phil Mickelson spot on vs. Tiger Woods? Many would think that these two stars often played together, but that is not the case. The two legends only played in the same group 38 times during their illustrious careers. Tiger recorded the better round 19 times, to Mickelson's 15. Four times they shot the same number. Woods won seven of those events to Lefty's three. However, one must remember that Mickelson said from 2007 onward that he "owned" Tiger Woods when they played together. From 2007 to 2020, Mickelson went 10-9-1 in head-to-head rounds. It is hard to call that any sort of domination. Nevertheless, most fans solely remember Woods leaving Phil in his tracks over and over. It is hard to believe that, as dominant as Tiger was throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s. But Mickelson was not too far off about the overall numbers. Today's stars play against each other all the time, so it is also wild to see that two of the best players on the PGA Tour have only gone head-to-head 38 times. These stats are just a hint at the battle between Tiger and Phil, though. Numerous other statistical categories demonstrate the Big Cat's dominance since 1997. Mickelson can call his putter the Tiger Slayer all he wants, but Woods still controlled golf throughout this period. Golden Retriever Still Waits for Dog Dad to Come Home a Year After Breakup

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video of a dog waiting for her dad to return over a year later provides viewers a glimpse into how breakups can affect pets. A pet parent, known on TikTok as @ shared in a July 1 video her golden retriever lounging on the deck, depressed, waiting for her dog dad to return. The dog, Zoe, does not understand that her owners ended their relationship 1 1/2 years ago. And yet, every afternoon, she waits for her dad to return, the owner told Newsweek via TikTok. While a breakup affects the people involved, it also affects pets, especially this canine, as the owner said they "raised her like childless people in their 20s." Zoe went everywhere with them—friends' and family's homes, work and errands. But her life turned upside down. Despite him leaving and never visiting, Zoe still holds onto hope he'll return. "She starts at a window watching the road, and if a similar sounding car drives past, she'll run to every window to look, then wait near the front door," she said. "... before he left, she never sat and slept outside at night, ever. Some nights I find her out there in the middle of the night, and it's just so sad." Realizing the toll it's taken on Zoe, this owner stopped saying "dad" in conversations. She'll be cautious when rewatching videos in case he speaks because it causes Zoe to perk up. They'll take "therapy" visits to the beach to lift her spirits, she said. "Golden retrievers are sensitive, gentle souls, and watching her hurt is sometimes worse than him leaving me," she added. "It resonated with a lot of people, but also demonstrates how many people are prepared to abandon an animal for no reason," she said. "So many comments—especially from men—assume the only reason someone would abandon an animal is if there wasn't another choice." One viewer wrote: "It's about a poor doggo missing a key human in its life. Dog doesn't know he was leaving and never coming back." Another added: "She thinks he's lost. She's right. The pain lasts for as long as the heart is deep." A third person commented: "My ex and I share custody ... it was a messy breakup and I am willing to have heartbreak everytime i see him just so i can see my dogs. Theres no excuse." Helping Pets Through a Breakup As intuitive animals, dogs spend their days observing their owners and daily routines. They can sense a change in habits or emotions, including when a couple splits. Dogs might move to new homes or see their owners less often after a breakup. This unfamiliar routine could cause emotional stress, just as much as it affects people. An article from Hanne Grice, clinical animal behaviorist, mentioned a few steps that would help reduce a dog's stress during a breakup. Try to keep the dog's routine the same during this life change. If a move is involved, make frequent visits beforehand to the new area and, if possible, the home. Keep the visits positive. Avoid negative talks with an ex in front of children and animals, as they can pick up on that energy. Finally, be sure to visit your veterinarian to rule out any physical causes if your dog shows signs of lethargy, spending more time in bed, persistent licking or an unwillingness to walk and play.
