Pirates hope call-up of MLB's top pitching prospect gives them Paul Skenes boost originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Pittsburgh Pirates hope the next Paul Skenes is on his way to the big leagues.
According to MLB.com insider Alex Stumpf, the Pirates are planning to call up the top pitching prospect in baseball, Bubba Chandler.
Armed with a high-90s fastball, Chandler is ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the game, according to MLB Pipeline, and is the top pitching prospect in baseball.
Stumpf posted on X that "Chandler will be used as a bulk reliever with/ the Pirates. The team views him as a starter long term, and he can get starts this year, but the club wants him to get Major League experience, and this is consistent with the role/expectations of other young pitchers like (Braxton) Ashcraft."
Chandler, 22, seemed primed for an early-season call-up before struggling with command over the last few months. He posted a 5-6 record with a 4.05 ERA over 100 innings with Triple-A Indianapolis.
The Pirates' initial plan for Chandler was to manage his workload, like they did in 2024 with Paul Skenes. The goal was to have Chandler fully stretched out in May, but his problems with command forced them to revise the plan.
When the Pirates traded Bailey Falter in July, general manager Ben Cherington shared a goal to give opportunities to pitchers who could be part of their 2026 rotation plans.
Chandler will comprise the Pirates' young pitching core alongside Skenes and Jared Jones. Chandler will retain his rookie status if he pitches fewer than 50 innings down the stretch.

Report says bullet was fired into Chiefs coach Andy Reid's office last spring while he was there

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A bullet was fired into Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid's office at the team's practice facility last spring while he was inside, the Kansas City Star reported Wednesday. The Star, citing multiple sources, reported Reid was working alone in his office in early May 2024 when a bullet fired from outside the building broke through glass and left a hole through the window and blinds. It got lodged in a wall between his bathroom and the entry door to his office. The team installed bulletproof glass soon afterward. The Star reported two more bullets hit the facility, with one striking the third floor and another an outdoor air-conditioning unit. Few people people in the organization knew about the incident. A Chiefs spokesman declined comment to the AP on Wednesday night. The incident occurred just months after Reid led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl championship repeat and their third title in a five-year span. They won the AFC again last season, only to lose to Philadelphia. Reid has a 273-146-1 record in 12 seasons with the Chiefs and 14 with the Eagles. He ranks fourth on the NFL's all-time wins list behind Don Shula, George Halas and Bill Belichick. ___ AP NFL:

Kyle Higashioka has a 3-run double in the 9th to help the Rangers beat the Royals 6-3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kyle Higashioka had a three-run double in the ninth inning after a two-out error by Vinnie Pasquantino, and the Texas Rangers rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Wednesday night. Wyatt Langford drew a two-out walk from Sam Long (1-3) and Corey Seager was safe when Pasquantino misplayed his slow roller at first. Marcus Semien reached on an infield hit before Higashioka doubled down the left-field line. Hoby Milner (2-3) got the final four outs for the win. Mike Yastrzemski and Bobby Witt Jr. led off the first with singles off fill-in first-time starter Caleb Boushley, and Pasquantino followed with his 25th home run to put the Royals up 3-1. Witt had three hits for the Royals, including his 39th double — tops in the majors. Boushley filled in for Jacob deGrom, who had his start skipped after he experienced arm fatigue following his last outing. Boushley pitched two scoreless innings following his 38-pitch first. Langford hit his 18th home run to lead off the game against rookie Noah Cameron. Langford singled and scored on a two-out base hit by Semien to cut it to 3-2 in the third. Cameron allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings as Kansas City saw a five-game win streak end. Jonah Heim had a leadoff double off Daniel Lynch IV in the seventh before scoring on Seager's two-out single off Lucas Erceg to tie it 3-3. Key moment Higashioka's double gave Texas its first lead since the first inning. Key stat The Royals have hit the fewest home runs in the American League but they've outhomered the Rangers 14-3 in winning five of six matchups this season. Up next LHP Patrick Corbin (6-9, 4.45) was set to start Thursday as the Rangers go for a split of the four-game series opposite Royals RHP Michael Lorenzen (5-8, 4.43). ___ AP MLB:

LLWS: South Carolina rallies for stunning walk-off win after trailing 6-1 in final inning, stays alive for U.S. championship

Facing elimination at the Little League World Series Wednesday night, South Carolina appeared to be done. But the team from the Columbia suburb of Irmo didn't quit after giving up five runs to South Dakota in the top of the extra seventh inning to dig a 6-1 deficit. South Carolina responded with six runs of its own in the bottom of seventh to secure a 7-6 walk-off win and stay alive in the LLWS. Now it's three wins away from a LLWS championship. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] South Carolina had to mount multiple rallies to advance. South Dakota held a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the final half-inning of regulation. South Carolina was down to its final out with runners on first and second. A Ryder Tillitz line-drive single loaded the bases, but didn't score a run. But Jacob Gibson worked a full-count walk to secure the game-tying run, ultimately sending the game to extras tied at 1-1. [Complete Little League World Series results] Wild seventh inning There, chaos ensued. South Dakota scored a one-out run to take a 2-1 advantage before a Connor Felderman line drive for the second out. From there, South Dakota scored four two-out runs to seemingly take control of the game. But South Carolina scored three runs before recording its first out of the bottom of the seventh, cutting South Dakota's lead to 6-4 on a bases-loaded walk. Then, with one out, Brady Westbrooks secured another bases-loaded walk on five pitches to cut the deficit to 6-5, setting Andrew Bogan for his walk-off heroics. Bogan sent a 2-2 pitch down the right-field line that snuck just under the glove of diving right fielder Grayson Rehfeldt. Two runs scored, and the South Carolina benches cleared as players rushed to the field to celebrate the walk-off win. The stunning rally spelled heartbreak for South Dakota, whose LLWS is over with the elimination-game loss. South Carolina advances to another elimination game on Thursday against Las Vegas. The winner of that game advances to face Fairfield, Connecticut for the U.S. championship. The winner between those two teams will advance to face the International winner for LLWS championship.
