China's consumption push will support global growth, Premier Li says

BEIJING: Chinese premier Li Qiang said on Thursday reforms and a shift to a consumption-led model in the world's No. 2 economy will help it continue to be the world's biggest driver of economic growth.
Beijing's second-ranking official said policy support rolled out since late last year was helping lift domestic demand and that China's economy had shown resilience, despite a slowing global economy and fresh external challenges.
"We are strengthening macro policies, actively expanding domestic demand, and forcefully boosting consumption," Li said at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's annual meeting in Beijing.
"The expansion and quality upgrading of China's massive market will continue to unleash enormous dividends, creating more trade and investment opportunities for countries worldwide. In short, China remains the country that provides the greatest driving force for global economic growth."
His comments come after both the International Monetary Fund and World Bank warned earlier this year that growth across the Asia Pacific could weaken due to China's cooling economy and rising trade tensions with the West.
Lacklustre imports over the past six months have raised questions among economists over the nature of China's contribution to regional growth.

Unique Fire eyes global expansion after Main Market transfer

KUALA LUMPUR: Fire protection solutions provider Unique Fire Holdings Bhd is gearing up for international expansion, driven by product innovation, certification efforts, and an increased local presence, following its recent transfer from the ACE Market to the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia. At 9 am, the company debuted on the Main Market at 37.5 sen, unchanged from its closing price on the ACE Market, with 46,000 shares traded. Its executive director Datuk Marcus Liew Kang Leong said the group is actively strengthening its portfolio through three major growth initiatives. "Last year, we entered into a joint venture with a Chinese partner to manufacture fire sprinklers. "We are currently undergoing the underwriters laboratories (UL) certification process, which takes about 12 months to 18 months,' he told a press conference held in conjunction with the company's listing transfer ceremony here today. Once certified, Liew said the UL endorsement, one of the stringent global standards for fire safety equipment, will enable the company to export its products to key markets, including the Middle East, Europe, the United States (US), and other parts of the world. Liew also addressed concerns regarding the US-imposed tariffs, noting that the company is currently not affected, as most of its revenue is still generated in Malaysia. "We rarely export to the US at this point. Even if tariffs are introduced later, we expect them to apply equally to all exporters. Malaysia's tariff rate is in the mid-range,' he said. Apart from that, Liew also said that the company has expanded to Penang and Johor Bahru. "With this expansion, our sales have grown tremendously. The goal of these two expansions is not just to showcase our product capabilities, but to create greater convenience for our customers,' he added. Unique Fire, a distributor of fire protection systems, equipment, and accessories, also manufactures and distributes custom graphics designed for fire extinguishers. The company has since expanded its activities, and today, it is primarily involved in the assembly, manufacture, and distribution of active fire protection systems, equipment, and accessories for built environments, including fire suppression systems, fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, fire hoses, fire alarms, and detection devices. Unique Fire, which debuted on the ACE Market in August 2022, has made strong strides in financial performance and operational growth. - Bernama

Indonesia's Whoosh High-Speed Rail Exceeds 10 Mln Passengers

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar JAKARTA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Indonesia's Jakarta–Bandung high-speed train, locally known as Whoosh, has carried more than 10 million passengers since its commercial launch in October 2023, the train operator said on Thursday. PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) said the milestone was reached between Oct 17, 2023 and June 25, 2025, with 10,014,707 passengers recorded across 29,786 journeys. bootstrap slideshow 'This figure reflects strong public enthusiasm for Whoosh,' said KCIC general manager for corporate secretary, Eva Chairunisa, in a statement. She said passenger uptake had been aided by transport integration efforts, including links to feeder trains, the Greater Jakarta LRT, bus services, and taxis. Eva cited a finding from a study by the University of Indonesia's research centre that the train emits 6.9 grammes of CO₂ per passenger-kilometre, compared to 12.7 grammes from private vehicles. The train has also helped reduce carbon emissions by up to 54 per cent, while potentially saving approximately 2.91 billion rupiah (about US$180,000) per year in traffic accident-related costs, she added. The Whoosh high-speed rail project began in 2015, with construction starting in 2016. It entered service in 2023, making Indonesia the first country in Southeast Asia to operate a high-speed rail network. The project is part of a broader infrastructure push backed by Chinese investment under Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative.
