Petronas using 'every trick under the sun' to undermine Sarawak's rights
Published on: Sat, May 03, 2025 Text Size: Bernama KUCHING: Political analyst Dato Peter Minos has accused Petronas of using 'every trick under the sun' to weaken Sarawak's control over its oil and gas resources, describing the national oil company's alleged tactics as unacceptable, DayakDaily reported. Minos said attempts to use the 'flawed' Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74) to erase Sarawak's rights, along with pressure campaigns against the State and its energy company Petros, must be opposed. 'Using flawed PDA74 to erase our rights is simply unacceptable. Applying pressure on Sarawak by underhanded tactics, like threats and press war, is also unacceptable,' he was quoted as saying. He stressed that oil and gas within Sarawak's territory and continental shelf rightfully belong to the State, under the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 and by natural rights. 'We are not asking for the moon. We just want a bit more from our own oil and gas resources,' said Minos, urging Petronas to treat Sarawak with fairness. While acknowledging Petronas' role in national development, Minos reaffirmed the priority of Sarawak's rights. 72 Sabah dilapidated school upgrades completed

One project worth RM12.6 million is in the design stage and another worth RM54 million is at the procurement stage, bringing the total to nearly RM1 billion. During a visit to SMK Pinggan-Pinggan in Pitas, Ahmad said all works are via open tender to ensure timely or early completion. The RM27 million SMK Pinggan-Pinggan project, 78pc complete, includes two hostel blocks, warden houses, a dining hall for 400 students, and support facilities. The new hostel, to be completed in December 2025, will replace one located 1.3km away, which forces students to walk along busy roads without pedestrian paths. Ahmad said it will improve safety, reduce absenteeism, and provide better living conditions. BN aims to contest 1 state seat in every Sabah parliamentary constituency

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Barisan Nasional wants to contest at least one state seat in every parliamentary constituency in Sabah in the coming state election, says its deputy chairman, Mohamad Hasan. Mohamad, who is also the Umno deputy president, said this is a key demand from the Sabah Umno-BN leadership, aimed at ensuring the party has representation and relevance across the state, Berita Harian reported. 'In the last state election, there were several parliamentary areas that had no BN candidates at all. This dampened the morale of the Umno-BN members and machinery as they had no role to play during the election. 'When people are not given the opportunity, some become disheartened and eventually leave the party, and that's not good,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the joint Umno divisional delegates' meeting, including its Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings, in Membakut today. Mohamad said BN should be allocated at least one seat to contest in constituencies with two or three state seats. 'This would lift the spirits of our party members and make them feel included in the process,' he said. Mohamad said the proposal would be discussed at the top level through Umno's negotiation committee and among the secretaries-general of the BN component parties. 'This is my message to the secretaries-general … do not disregard this request. Every parliamentary seat must have at least one BN candidate,' he said. Also present was Umno Supreme Council member and Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin.

Fire near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant contained: Russia
A fire that broke out near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, the Russian-installed administration of the Russia-held plant in Ukraine said on Saturday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The plant's administration said on Telegram that a civilian had been killed in the shelling, but that no plant employees or members of the emergency services had been injured. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said radiation levels remained within normal levels and the situation was under control. - Reuters
