More than 150,000 vehicles per day are reported to rely on the Dartford Crossing. It has been considered a vital cross that enables vehicles to commute or carry freight between the south-east and the rest of the country. It is the only way to cross the Thames river by road east of London, and links the counties of Essex and Kent. This is via the QEII bridge for southbound traffic, and two 1.4km-long tunnels for travellers going northbound. The closures will only occur overnight across the week, where driver's may be hit by disruptions. Diversions via the National Highways' network and local routes will be clearly signposted during this time. The QEII bridge will be fully closed from Saturday, August 16 to Sunday, August 17, between 10pm to 5am. The diversion route will be through the an installed contraflow through the Dartford east tunnel from 9:30pm on Saturday night. The Dartford west tunnel will remain open overnight for travel in the northbound direction. M6 and M4 closed over serious crashes with drivers facing long delays However, height restrictions will apply to vehicles going in this direction between 4.8 to 5 metres high. It involved the M20 motorway which was closed between Maidstone and Ashford overnight ahead of the spring bank holiday weekend for Operation Brock. The Dartford Crossing is also set to become more expensive next month. The cost of using it is expected to jump from £2.50 to £3.50 in September. This will mark the first price increase for the crossing since 2014. Transport Secretary, Lilian Greenwood, explained the toll increase was necessary in order to manage the almost 200,000 vehicles that use it everyday. Analysts have suggested that these increased charges could be used to fund the upcoming Lower Thames Crossing mega project. The project is set to ease congestion, and provide an alternative route for vehicles between Essex and Kent.

Family motors that lose least value over time revealed with stylish SUV still worth £1,000s after multiple years

It's bad news for fans of the Jaguar I-PACE PRICE IS RIGHT Family motors that lose least value over time revealed with stylish SUV still worth £1,000s after multiple years THE FAMILY motors that lose the least value over time have been revealed - with a luxury compact SUV taking the top spot. New data from the analysis of 40 million UK car sales over a typical three-year ownership period highlights which family models hold their value best. Advertisement 5 The Porsche Macan ranks top as the family motor that keeps its value the best over a three-year period Credit: Alamy 5 The sporty SUV is popular in the UK for its performance, practicality and prestige Credit: Getty 5 In contrast, the Jaguar I-PACE was among the fastest-depreciating family cars Credit: Getty Experts from Carmoola have recently released their new Car Depreciation Index, developed with vehicle data specialists Brego, which ranks the top-performing family cars for resale value. They found that the Porsche Macan is the slowest-depreciating family car sold in the UK - losing just 19.9% of its value over three years. The Macan is particularly popular in the UK due to its blend of sporty performance, SUV practicality and the prestige of the Porsche badge. It's championed for being agile and powerful, with a well-tuned suspension that makes it enjoyable to drive on various UK roads, from city streets to country lanes. Advertisement What's more, it offers a comfortable and refined experience, even at higher speeds. Close behind is the Toyota Yaris Cross, another small SUV, which boasts a similarly impressive depreciation rate of 20.2%. Other well-known nameplates such as the Land Rover Discovery and Toyota RAV4 also ranked highly. In stark contrast, fully electric models like the Jaguar I-PACE and Audi E-Tron were found to lose over 65% of their value - making them among the fastest-depreciating family cars. Advertisement The I-PACE, which was recently discontinued by Jaguar along with their entire line-up of cars, is a simply gorgeous-looking SUV that looks like good value when bought used. However, the model has been the subject of a number of recalls in recent years and it has since gained a reputation for reliability issues. EV6 Kia EV6 GT is a ridiculously fast SUV that even boils your kettle - but can it beat £158k Porsche 911 in drag race The study also found that MPVs retain value better than other family car types, with an average depreciation of 28.8%. Saloons, though, depreciate the quickest, losing nearly 36% of their value. Advertisement This research comes as July is traditionally seen as the peak season for family car purchases in the UK - with cars able to retain their value often something financially conscious drivers think about. Aidan Rushby, founder and CEO of Carmoola, said: 'Buying a family car is an exciting and important decision that brings convenience, comfort, and peace of mind to everyday life. Family cars with the lowest depreciation over three years or 36,000 miles Porsche Macan - 19.9% Toyota Yaris Cross - 20.2% Land Rover Discovery - 24.1% Toyota RAV4 - 24.3% Volkswagen Tiguan - 25.3% Source: Carmoola 'Our latest data shows that depreciation is often the largest hidden cost of ownership, so choosing a vehicle that holds its value well is a smart way to protect your investment. 'With July traditionally the busiest month for family car sales and potentially a busy summer of travel ahead, having a reliable car that retains its value like the Porsche Macan or Toyota Yaris Cross can save families thousands when it is time to upgrade or sell. 'Selecting a car with strong resale value not only safeguards your investment but also ensures you have dependable transport for all your journeys.' Sales of popular convertibles plummet across UK as drivers opt for practical and safe SUVs

DRIVERS are no longer going topless – as the days of the convertible are numbered. Despite our terrible weather, this country was once the second- biggest market for the drop-top models in Europe. 9 Susan Sarandon, left, and Geena Davis in 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible from Thelma & Louise Credit: Alamy 9 Sean Connery in 1962 Bond film, Dr No Credit: Alamy 9 William drives Kate in an Aston Martin DB6 Volante after their 2011 wedding Credit: AP:Associated Press But now it seems that daring UK motorists are not willing to risk the threat of pouring rain to feel the wind in their hair. New sales of cabriolets have dropped by almost a tenth over the past couple of decades. There is so little demand for them that only 16 new car models offer a roof-down option. These symbols of motoring freedom have been replaced by safe and practical SUVs, which last year became Britain's best-selling car. It was all very different in the decadent 1990s when sales of convertibles took off, peaking at 94,484 in 2004. A racy Mazda MX5, BMW Z3 or VW Golf GTi Cabriolet were a common sight on the nation's roads. The glamour of Thelma & Louise's 1966 Ford Thunderbird or newly married Prince William and Kate waving to the crowds from their Aston Martin DB6 Volante have faded. Unwelcome luxury Last year, only 12,173 sales of new convertibles were registered here. Chris Knapman, from vehicle research and sales site CarGurus UK, said: 'Our latest annual Convertibles Report highlights more than just a drop in new car model selection. 9 Beatle John Lennon enjoying his Triumph Herald convertible in 1965 Credit: Getty 9 Elle Macpherson posing with the hybrid Fiat 500c 9 Barbie's Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in a Corvette Credit: Alamy 'It reflects a wider shift in the automotive landscape towards SUVs.' Rare Ford Escort Cabriolet 'Special Edition' goes under the hammer But we are not alone, as global sales of cabriolets were down 20 per cent over the past year. One of the problems is that manufacturers are focusing on electric cars to help governments hit Net Zero. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster The need to keep these vehicles energy efficient means that the juice used for lowering or raising the roof is an unwelcome luxury. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster. There is still, at least, a demand for cabriolets in the second-hand market. The latest figures from AutoTrader show that advert views for open-top cars hit 150,085 this summer, up from 133,329 in July 2023. And with well over one million convertibles registered in the UK, there is still a good chance of seeing motorists soaking up the sunshine with their shades on. 9 VW Golf GTi Cabriolet from 1985 Credit: Alamy 9 The Graduate's Dustin Hoffman in Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider Credit: Alamy 9 MG Cyberster is one of only two electric drop-tops on UK forecourts Credit: Supplied
