Singaporean singer-songwriter, scriptwriter and social media personality Annette Lee will make her debut as a feature film director with the drama-comedy Dream Stall.
The 32-year-old content creator is writing the screenplay and will work with entertainment company mm2 Entertainment to produce and distribute the movie. Principal photography is expected to start later in 2025.
The production is holding a casting call for actors fitting four categories: female, aged between 23 and 28; male, aged 23 to 28; female, aged 10 to 12; and male, aged 15 to 16.
Some acting experience is preferred and responses must come in by June 18. More information about the casting call can be found on Lee's Instagram page (@annettelee), which has 245,000 followers.
Dream Stall, which will be in Mandarin and English, is about a fresh university graduate named Enya (played by Lee) who takes over her father's bak kut teh hawker business. He disapproves of her decision, but she is determined to fulfil her dream of becoming a chef.
In a press statement, Lee says: "I want to explore a story that delves into the modern Singaporean dream and examines what it truly means to achieve success in a highly pragmatic society like Singapore."
The popular influencer and comedienne, who studied digital film-making at Nanyang Technological University, graduated in 2015.
Her short films Graduation (2014) and Keep Mum (2015) have earned awards and nominations, including at the Singapore Short Film Awards and National Youth Film Awards.
In 2016, she joined home-grown social media platform SGAG, becoming a pioneer in its video team, creating sketches and web series for brands.
She went independent in 2020 and now writes, directs and acts in her own videos.
Lee released her debut EP, All Our Achilles Heels, in 2017, and followed up with a second EP, Song For The Underdog, in 2020. She held her first major live show, Annette Lee: All-In-One, at the Esplanade Theatre in 2022, featuring her comedy and music.
Mr Gary Goh, managing director of mm2 Entertainment Singapore, says the company "is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of storytellers, primarily through our Y2Y (Youth to Youth) programme".
"Dream Stall exemplifies our belief in empowering young voices to share their unique perspectives and lived experiences. Annette's journey from content creator to feature film director is a powerful inspiration for aspiring film-makers across Singapore and the region. We hope her courage to tell an authentic story will encourage more young talents to pursue their dreams and contribute to our local film industry."

President Tharman praises Indian music star A.R. Rahman for helping Singapore musicians

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam met award-winning Indian music star A.R. Rahman when the latter was in Singapore. PHOTO: THARMAN SHANMUGARATNAM/INSTAGRAM SINGAPORE - President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has praised Indian music star A.R. Rahman for working with Singapore musicians. In social media posts made on June 2, Mr Tharman uploaded photos of himself meeting the Grammy-, Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning music and film icon popularly known as 'ARR'. Rahman, 58, was in town on the weekend of May 10 and 11 for the premiere of Le Musk, a multi-sensory virtual reality (VR) film he directed that is screening at Golden Village Suntec City until Aug 12. 'Our Indian music and cultural talents, from classical to the most contemporary and edgy, are naturally a minority in the local scene. But they make Singapore's multiculturalism all the more special,' President Tharman wrote. 'ARR has also done our own talents good over the years, by giving them valuable exposure,' he added, listing the home-grown acts who have worked with Rahman - rapper-songwriter duo Lady Kash and Krissy, singer-musician Shabir and rapper Yung Raja. Rahman's collaborations include Wanna Mash Up?, song with Lady Kash and Krissy for the 2014 Hindi film Highway. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised A.R. Rahman for working with Singapore musicians. PHOTO: THARMAN SHANMUGARATNAM/INSTAGRAM Mr Tharman added that Singapore was the first place that Rahman, who was born in Madras, Tamil Nadu, travelled to out of India in the 1980s, and how the musician bought his equipment from local music stores Swee Lee and City Music. 'Good to see that both local music stores are still going strong after all these years,' Mr Tharman wrote. Rahman is a prolific musician, composer and singer whose works span more than160 film soundtracks and albums. Incorporating Indian classical with contemporary Western, his music famously transcended Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films, and made a mark in Hollywood, the West End and Broadway. He gained global fame when his soundtrack to the Mumbai-set British film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) earned him Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (for the upbeat number Jai Ho) at the 2009 Academy Awards. The crime drama romance, which starred Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, also won Rahman Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Le Musk, a 37-minute film that marks his directorial debut, uses pioneering camera technologies to present an immersive film that blends virtual reality, haptics, music and fragrance. Screened exclusively at GV Suntec, viewers wear VR headsets and sit in special egg-shaped chairs that release scents. Rahman has staged several concerts in Singapore, most recently at the National Stadium on Aug 31, 2024. He also performed at Gardens by the Bay in 2014, the Singapore Indoor Stadium in 2005, as well as four shows at Marina Bay Sands in 2011.
