Time of India4 hours ago

Udupi: With the district experiencing more rainfall than usual, officials must work on the ground to ensure that the public does not face any inconvenience, said Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister of women and child development and Udupi district minister.
Presiding over the quarterly KDP meeting on Friday, the minister said that Rs 4.5 crore was released to prevent sea erosion, and the work must be expedited. The minister instructed port department officials to identify areas affected by sea erosion from Hejmadi in Kaup taluk to Shiroor in Byndoor and submit a report to the govt. The maintenance of Malpe port should be done properly. CCTV should be installed, and security and cleanliness should be maintained, the minister directed port department officials.
"Special attention should be given to tourism and sports development. The district should grow as a major tourism centre. It is a naturally beautiful place with religious sites, and it should attract more tourists. Unauthorised homestays should be curbed, and children under 18 should not be employed at tourist spots. Steps should be taken for the development of tourism and sports under the PPP model," the minister said.
The company that supplied substandard seeds to farmers in the district should be blacklisted, and strict action should be taken. Horticulture department officials should ensure that govt schemes reach the people. Awareness should be raised about high-income generating fruits, she said.
"In the coastal region of the state, fishing activities are more prevalent. However, only 25 houses are being approved under the housing scheme.
Other districts are also being given 25 houses. Steps will be taken to resolve these issues," she said.
The Varahi irrigation works were initiated five years ago, but compensation has not yet been provided, and crops have not been allowed to grow. This is causing a lot of trouble for farmers. Suitable compensation should be provided to farmers by the next meeting, the minister said.
MLAs Yashpal Suvarna, Kiran Kumar Kodgi, Gururaj Gantihole, Gurme Suresh Shetty, MLCs Manjunath Bhandary, Dhananjay Sarji, deputy commissioner Swaroopa TK, zilla panchayat CEO Prateek Bayal, superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, DFO Ganapati, and other departmental officials were present at the meeting.

Chellanam residents intensify protest seeking permanent solution for sea erosion

Kochi: Hundreds of Chellanam residents took out two protest rallies on Friday demanding immediate measures to prevent sea erosion. Expressing solidarity with the people, priests from the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses held a hunger strike near the Thoppumpady BOT bridge, demanding the construction of a sea wall from Kannamally to Fort Kochi as an immediate solution to the issue. As the monsoon showers intensified, Chellanam experienced the highest ever sea surge in recent years. As more than 500 houses were affected by sea surge, the residents of Kannamaly and Puthanthodu regions of the Chellanam panchayat held a protest on Monday. The protesters also staged a blockade on the Alappuzha-Fort Kochi state highway. The rallies and the hunger strike on Friday were the continuation of these protests under the banner of 'Care Chellanam' collective. The mass rallies that commenced at 3.30pm from Palluruthy and Thoppumpady Santhom Junction concluded at the venue of the hunger strike. While the hunger strike which began at 10am at the BOT Junction was inaugurated by Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council vice-president Joseph Jude, a rally by priests from St Sebastian Church, Thoppumpady, was inaugurated by Kripasanam director Joseph Valiyaveettil. Following coastal residents' protests, the govt allocated Rs 340 crore for constructing a 12.5km sea wall from Chellanam fishing harbour towards the north, but only 7.35km was completed. The area from Puthenthode to Fort Kochi is currently experiencing intense sea erosion and construction has been completely halted. "Many homes here are either partially or completely destroyed, making them uninhabitable. We are expecting high waves next week as the sea becomes more powerful with the new moon. If authorities now send back people from relief camps to homes, they will have to return to the camp again next week. Since the temporary sandbags and geo bags were completely destroyed in the recent sea surge, the high waves expected during the new moon will severely affect the area," said general convenor of Chellanam-Kochi People's Forum V T Sebastian. Forum members also demanded that the govt should provide rental houses or pay rent for those living in damaged houses. The rallies were flagged off by KCBC secretary general Rev Thomas Tharayil and Kerala Latin Catholic Association state president Sherry J Thomas. The concluding meeting was inaugurated by Kottapuram diocese bishop Rev Ambrose Puthenveettil.

Technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work: Minister

Mysuru: In the coming years, technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work, much like how wars are now fought with technology, said HC Mahadevappa, minister for social welfare and Mysuru district minister. Addressing a gathering at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) auditorium on Friday, he urged pourakarmikas (civic workers) to ensure their children are well-educated and aim for higher positions in society. The occasion marked the distribution of permanent appointment order letters to pourakarmikas who are now permanent employees. Out of 10,000 pourakarmikas made permanent across Karnataka, 219 belong to the Mysuru City Corporation. Highlighting the transformation, the minister said that these workers, who earlier earned around Rs 17,000 per month, will now receive double the salary along with full govt benefits. "This permanent status will help workers lead a more dignified life and elevate their families socially and economically," he said. Mahadevappa also compared conditions in other states, noting that in Madhya Pradesh, pourakarmikas are paid only Rs 10,000—below minimum wage standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo He reassured that more regularisation drives would be conducted in Karnataka to benefit more workers. Urging financial prudence, the minister advised pourakarmikas not to waste their increased earnings but instead invest wisely in their families' future. Responding to a request by former mayor Narayan regarding the 88 temporary pourakarmikas who died while on duty, the minister instructed the MCC commissioner to take appropriate steps to support their families. Avinash S, a civic worker, shared his personal experience, expressing gratitude to the govt. "Earlier, I struggled with a meagre salary of Rs 17,000. Now, with a permanent job and better income, I feel motivated and can finally think about marriage and a secure future," he said. Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait, deputy commissioner Lakshikanth Reddy, MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, former mayor and Pourakarmika leader Narayan, and pourakarmika leader Mara were present.

Reach out to disgruntled members, Shah tells state brass

Bengaluru: Union home minister Amit Shah Friday took note of ongoing dissidence within the Karnataka unit of the party and suggested state brass reach out to disgruntled members and set things right. Dissidence has caused severe unrest among party ranks with three MLAs — Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, Shivaram Hebbar and ST Somashekar — being expelled in the recent past. On a visit to Bengaluru to inaugurate the Adichunchanagiri University Bengaluru campus, Shah Friday met with brass of the state unit, including state president BY Vijayendra, opposition leader R Ashoka, deputy opposition leader Arvind Bellad, and Lok Sabha MP and former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai. At the meeting, Shah reportedly acknowledged internal discord and urged state office-bearers to reach out to disgruntled party members. A BJP functionary said, "Brass has been asked to take everyone along." Sources also say that the state unit requested Shah to clarify uncertainty surrounding the party state presidency, saying it would ease dissidence within the ranks. Vijayendra later told reporters that Shah had "advised them to double efforts" to combat the "corrupt Congress govt". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "We discussed the political scenario in Karnataka and current developments," Vijayendra said. He said Shah provided guidance and suggestions to intensify the fight against the Congress govt in the state. Meanwhile, questions surfaced regarding BJP patron and former chief minister BS Yediyurappa's stance on Union minister Pralhad Joshi's involvement in engaging with dissidents to resolve the rebellion. Yediyurappa expressed support for such efforts, saying he too was in favour of such a move and that he will "follow suit". Ayushman Bharat has helped 60cr: Shah While addressing the gathering during the inauguration Adichunchanagiri University campus on the outskirts of the city, Shah said the Centre's Ayushman Bharat health insurance has helped 60 crore citizens. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can avail treatments and procedures up to Rs 5 free of cost. Shah said that since 2014, the NDA govt under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has implemented a series of healthcare initiatives, including increasing the number of AIIMS hospitals from seven to 23, medical colleges from 387 to 718 and medical seats for MBBS doctors from 51,000 to nearly 1.9 lakh.
