What led to the drop in the Amara Raja share price today?
Amara Raja shares came under pressure today after the company reported a weak performance in the March quarter of financial year 2025 (Q4FY25).
Ebitda margin squeezed 270 basis points (bps) to 11.4 per cent in Q4FY25, from 14.1 per cent in Q4FY24. 'The margins are adversely impacted due to a surge in alloy prices and power cost due to regulatory changes in solar power settlements and fuel surcharges,' the company explained, in a statement.

While the Lead Acid Business continues to deliver strong results, we are seeing good traction in allied businesses as well. The New Energy Business witnessed groundbreaking of Giga Factory this year and continues to grow as per our projections. In another few quarters we will have the R&D facility and Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) operational which will add to our capabilities. The teams are committed to deliver excellence even as the global economic scenario continues to remain uncertain.'

Airlines projected to report USD 36 billion profit in 2025: IATA

Airlines' profit is expected to touch USD 36 billion, slightly higher than USD 32.4 billion posted last year, IATA said on Monday. ADVERTISEMENT Addressing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in the national capital, its Director General Willie Walsh asserted that airspace should be kept out of trade wars. The AGM is taking place in India after 42 years. Flagging concerns over supply chain issues, Walsh said there is a backlog of 17,000 aircraft and 1,100 planes under 10 years are in storage while the fleet replacement rate is three per cent. In 2025, airlines globally are expected to report a profit of USD 36 billion, higher than USD 32.4 billion recorded in 2024, but slightly down compared to USD 36.6 billion projected in December 2024, as per IATA. Walsh said that USD 36 billion profit is significant but that equates to just USD 7.20 per passenger per segment. ADVERTISEMENT "It's still a thin buffer and any new tax, increase in airport or navigation charge, demand shock or costly regulation will quickly put the industry's resilience to the test," he said. The airline industry's revenues are expected to reach a historic high of USD 979 billion in 2025, around 1.3 per cent higher than the figure seen in 2024, according to IATA, which represents about 350 airlines comprising over 80 per cent of the global air traffic. ADVERTISEMENT Around 1,700 participants are expected to attend the World Air Transport Summit, and the AGM. According to IATA, India's aviation industry directly employs 3,69,700 people and generates USD 5.6 billion of GDP. ADVERTISEMENT When indirect, induced and tourism impacts are included, the totals rise to 7.7 million jobs and USD 53.6 billion of GDP (1.5 per cent). The next IATA AGM will be held in Brazil in 2026. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel)

Sensex crashes 762 points, Nifty falls over 200 amid weak Asian market trends

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty on Monday morning tumbled following weak trends in Asian markets and renewed global trade concerns. Moreover, foreign fund outflows also dented investors' sentiment, experts noted. The 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 762.24 points to 80,688.77 in early trade. The NSE Nifty dropped 212.25 points to 24,538.45. From the Sensex firms, HDFC Bank, HCL Tech, Reliance Industries, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, Titan, Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Steel were among the biggest laggards. Hindustan Unilever, Adani Ports, Mahindra & Mahindra, IndusInd Bank and Nestle were among the gainers. In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were trading lower. US markets ended on a mixed note on Friday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹6,449.74 crore on Friday, according to exchange data. US President Donald Trump on Friday said he is doubling the tariff on steel imports to 50 per cent. "The market structure favours continuation of the ongoing consolidation phase. There are global headwinds like renewed tariff concerns that will restrain a breakout rally. At the same time there are domestic tailwinds that will support the market at lower levels. President Trump's 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium is a clear message that the tariff and trade scenario will continue to be uncertain and turbulent. This headwind will impact markets. "On the domestic front, the tailwinds are getting stronger with the latest Q4 GDP growth data coming at 7.4 per cent, which is much better-than-expected," V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said. Indian economy expanded at a faster pace than expected in the last quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal, helping clock a 6.5 per cent growth rate in the year that elevated its size to USD 3.9 trillion and held promise of crossing world's fourth-largest economy Japan in FY26. The Indian economy grew at 7.4 per cent in January-March - the fourth and final quarter of April 2024 to March 2025 fiscal (FY25) - reflecting a strong cyclical rebound that was helped by a rise in private consumption and robust growth in construction and manufacturing. Vikas Jain, Head of Research at Reliance Securities, said, "Negative cues from global markets could cap gains. Asian markets and US index futures have come under pressure due to rising geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as renewed trade frictions following US President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50 per cent." Global oil benchmark Brent crude jumped 2.20 per cent to USD 64.16 a barrel. On Friday, the BSE Sensex declined by 182.01 points or 0.22 per cent to settle at 81,451.01. The Nifty dipped 82.90 points or 0.33 per cent to 24,750.70.

No weak signals but waning momentum

The equity indices consolidated for a second successive week. The Nifty declined by 102.45 points or 0.41 per cent. The BSE Sensex is down by just 0.33 per cent. The broader indices outperformed as Midcap-100 and Smallcap-100 gained by 1.29 per cent and 1.36 per cent, respectively. On a sectoral front, the Nifty Media is the top gainer with 1.67 per cent, followed by Realty with 1.33 per cent. The Energy and Banknifty are up by 0.68 per cent and 0.63 per cent. On the other hand, the FMCG sector is down by 2.16 per cent. The Auto and Consumer Durables fell by 0.81 per cent and 0.77 per cent, respectively. The India VIX is down by 6.95 per cent to 16.07. The FIIs bought Rs.11,773.25 crore, and the DIIs bought Rs.67,642.34 crore worth of equities during the month. As we forecast earlier, the benchmark index Nifty continues to consolidate within the range. With the last two weeks of inside action, the momentum is waning. As the index has not formed a lower low and is trading above the key supports, there are no weaker signals available. It traded in the 24378-25116 range over the last 15 days and closed at the midpoint of the range. It took support at 20 DMA twice during this consolidation. As long as this inside price action is taken out, the directional bias is neutral. As the MSCI rebalancing happened, massive volumes were recorded on Friday. The volumes were highest after 4th June 2024. Interestingly, the Nifty holds 9 nine distribution days currently, which is the highest number in recent history. Normally, when the distribution day count increases above six, there will be a confirmed downtrend. But the Nifty is in a confirmed uptrend this time. The interesting technical factor is a rare phenomenon. From the 4th March low, the volume trend is increasing. The Nifty is now 3.30 per cent above the 50 DMA, and just 0.23 per cent above the 20DMA. Even after a 15.51 per cent rally, the 200 DMA is still flat, not in an uptrend. The 200 EMA and other medium-term averages are in a decisively uptrend. This shows the inherent trend is stronger. The recovery from the 7th of April is very impulsive. All impulsive rallies normally consolidate before continuing the prior trend. A normal consolidation pattern takes 3-8 weeks time. As we stated, the time correction is due now. The 23.6 per cent retracement level of the recent upswing is at 24320. The 12th Mary low is at 24378. This zone is the crucial support of the consolidation. A close below the 20 DMA of 24692 will indicate a short-term weakness. In any case, the index closes below the support zone, the 50 DMA is at 23960, and the 38.6 per cent retracement level is at 23827. We can not expect the market to go down below this zone for now. If the Nifty declines below this, it means closing below the 200 DMA. For the past two weeks, the focus has shifted to mid- and small-cap stocks, as large caps are consolidating. The Midcap-100 index gained by 6.09 per cent, and the Smallcap-100 is up by 8.72 per cent. Whereas the benchmark Nifty has advanced just 1.71 per cent. In the current calendar year, the Nifty is positive by 4.7 per cent. Several stocks are breaking out of early-stage bases and showing higher relative strength. These stocks show a decent improvement in fundamentals with earnings growth. These stocks have the potential to outperform.
