Gary Lineker's £1.75m wage called 'outrageous' by BBC veteran in telling remark

Daily Mirror16-05-2025
Gary Lineker has been the BBC's highest-paid star for several years, and his £1.75million salary was once described as "outrageous" by former Mastermind host John Humphrys
Gary Lineker's eye-watering £1.75million salary for his role on BBC Match of the Day was once slammed as "outrageous" by veteran presenter John Humphrys. Despite a self-imposed pay cut in 2019 that brought his earnings down to £1.3m, Lineker has consistently been one of the Beeb's top earners.
The sports broadcaster, 64, is due to step down from MOTD after a 26-year stint as the face of the BBC 's prime football programme. Veteran broadcaster Humphrys, with 34 years under his belt hosting BBC Radio 4's Today programme, reacted with scepticism to Lineker's voluntary salary reduction in 2019.

He said at the time: "We don't know how much, so ask me when we know. I don't know. I thought £1.75million for a wee bit of chatting was outrageous."

Lineker's departure from his long-standing position was announced last November, with the BBC later revealing that the baton would be passed to Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates.
In a recent discussion with Amol Rajan, Lineker hinted that the BBC might have been keen on him exiting the prominent MOTD role. "Well, perhaps they want me to leave," he said. "There was the sense of that."
He acknowledged how the cycle of broadcasting rights influenced his likely exit but noted that staying on for the FA Cup and World Cup has, in fact, put him in a favourable position.
Reflecting on his time at the helm, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Everton striker added: "It's time. I've done it for a long time, it's been brilliant. In the end, I think there was a feeling that, because it was a new rights period, it was a chance to change the programme.
"I think it was their preference that I didn't do Match of the Day for one more year, so they could bring in new people. So it's slightly unusual that I would do the FA Cup and the World Cup, but to be honest, it's a scenario that suits me perfectly."

Stacey Solomon has been noticeably absent from Loose Women – pals finally reveal the real reason why

WITH several TV shows, fashion collections, a haircare range and five kids to look after, Stacey Solomon has her finger in many pies. However, there's one programme she's been conspicuously absent from in recent months and fans are desperate to know why. 6 6 Stacey, 35, last appeared on ITV's Loose Women in December 2024, as a guest on their groundbreaking 25 Hour Talkathon, which saw the ladies take to the air live for over an entire day with no breaks. While Stacey proved to be one of the more popular contributors on the day, discussing everything from her children to her Christmas plans, she hasn't been seen on the show since, leading curious viewers to question the reason behind her disappearance. 'Proud Loose Woman' Given she first appeared on Loose Women in 2011, becoming a regular panelist in 2016 and has made over 350 appearances, i t's a mystery as to why she has failed to come back in any capacity. Aside from her guest stint at the Talkathon, Stacey's last show on the panel was in June last year. Add to the fact she still boasts the title 'proud Loose Woman' on her Instagram biog and it's little wonder fans are scratching their heads. Now sources close to the star insist she's simply 'too busy' to go back to the studio. 'Back in a heartbeat' "Stacey is always welcome back and is absolutely still considered part of the Loose family, but at the moment she's so busy with personal projects and her kids that she never seems to find the time,' our source revealed. 'But they'd have her back in a heartbeat. They love her and there's no ill feeling towards her at all. She is just simply too busy to do it right now.' It's been a common theme with Stacey. Back in 2023, after she'd been absent from the show for several months following the birth of youngest daughter Belle, she admitted her work schedule and caring for the little one left her no time to commit to Loose Women. 6 Returning to the show that November, she said: "I'm so happy to be here. I feel like I've missed it so much. It's been crazy because my daughter Belle was a wonderful surprise, but what that meant was I had to fit my filming schedule into a very short period of time. "So I've just been up and down the country with Sort Your Life Out and filming another show, Bricking It, so I haven't been able to even get into town.' Stacey Solomon launches into huge rant after failing to win Bafta as she admits 'upset and devastation' Now history is repeating itself and it's little wonder Stace can't find a moment in her schedule. Packed schedule In the last six weeks she's been travelling the world, launching her latest Rehab hair care product in Lake Como and holidaying with her eldest son Zach, 17, in Paris. She's also been busy working on the new series of her BBC show, Sort Your Life Out. And pals believe Stacey, who has been married to TV star Joe Swash since 2022, may have more on her mind than just business. 'Everyone thinks she and Joe will try for another baby,' a source said. 'Stacey absolutely loves being a mum and she's openly spoken about adding to the family, so no one would be surprised if she wanted to go that route.' As well as sons Zach and Leighton, 13, from previous relationships, Stacey shares Rex, six, Rose, three, and two-year-old Belle with Joe, who himself has a son, Harry, 17. 6 6 In the lead-up to the launch of their reality show, Stacey & Joe, the couple discussed the possibility of more children in the future. 'Me and Stacey are so blessed that we are able to have kids and have this amazing family, but I'd love to have one more,' Joe said. Stacey, while not as keen, didn't shut the idea down completely, admitting she'd prefer to wait until her current brood are slightly older. 'I would love to, maybe when they're a bit older, and they're all independent,' she said. 'If we're lucky enough and if we were privileged enough to have a baby then, that's when I would consider it. But right now, I'm finally feeling like I'm recovering from three consecutive births. It's a lot." Despite being one of the biggest stars on TV, getting nominated for a BAFTA and having both her current shows on the BBC, Stacey failed to make it onto the corporation's recent rich list, where Gary Linieker reigned as the highest paid employee at the company for the eighth year in a row. BAFTA nomination And pals reckon her ambition to make it on there one day will drive a lot of her upcoming decisions. 'Stacey will have been disappointed to miss out on being named one of the BBC's richest stars, but if anything it will fuel her fire," the source added. "She's smart and already looking for the next opportunity. Her brand is very much centred around her family and being a mum, it's what she's most known and loved for, so that could potentially sway her decision to have another baby.' 6 Stacey Solomon's career so far Stacey Solomon has been a familiar face on viewers' screens for over a decade. Let's take a look back at her career. The X Factor (2009): Stacey competed in series six of long-running ITV singing competition The X Factor. During her time in the show, she was mentored by Danni Minogue in the 'Girls' category. The star finished in third place, behind Joe McElderry and Olly Murs. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (2010); In late 2010, Stacey headed to the infamous I'm A Celeb Aussie jungle. After 21 days, she triumphed to win the tenth series. It was through I'm A Celeb that she met future husband Joe Swash - who'd won two years earlier and was hosting the ITV2 spinoff. Celebrity Juice (2011―2013, 2016―2019): The star appeared as a panellist on 21 episodes of the comedy panel game show hosted by Keith Lemon. Stacey was a regular in the 21st series, broadcast in 2019. Loose Women (2016 - present): Stacey has been a permanent panel member of the daytime show since 2016. She previously made guest appearances in 2011 and 2012. Sort Your Life Out (2022 -present): This BBC show sees Stacey, with the help of an expert team, transform participants' living spaces after removing clutter. As The Sun recently reported, Stacey's been raking in a massive £57,000 every month through her various brand deals and has accumulated a wealth of almost £10million. While only a small portion of that comes from her TV shows - she's also making big bucks thanks to deals with Asda and Primark, as well as her hugely successful Rehab hair care range - she is undoubtedly happiest on the box. 'Stacey and Joe's reality show has been a big win for them and the BBC and she'd love to repeat the magic,' our source continued. 'Another series of that and maybe something else focused on parenting would be a recipe for success. "Watch this space but when she does find the time she will use it wisely - but that might mean we won't be seeing her back on Loose Women any time soon.'

Unlikely BBC sitcom star ‘cast as Anne Hathaway's love interest in Devil Wears Prada 2'

BBC sitcom star Patrick Brammall has been "cast as Anne Hathaway's new love interest in Devil Wears Prada 2". The Australian actor, who starred in drama series No Activity and Colin From Accounts, has landed a role in the long-awaited sequel. 6 6 Although it has not been confirmed who the 49-year-old will be playing, New Idea reported on Tuesday that Patrick will star as Hathaway's character Andrea 'Andy' Sachs' new love interest. In June, Blunt told Entertainment Tonight that she was going to start shooting the sequel in July. She said: 'It's so weird, I haven't even read a script, I don't know. I'm just like, where is she, I don't know." Last week, Hathaway was spotted filming scenes in New York City. She was seen in a colour block maxi dress by Gabriela Hearst with a blue suitcase and another snap she was pictured in a dark pinstripe suit with black boots and messenger bag.
