Gary Lineker's eye-watering £1.75million salary for his role on BBC Match of the Day was once slammed as "outrageous" by veteran presenter John Humphrys. Despite a self-imposed pay cut in 2019 that brought his earnings down to £1.3m, Lineker has consistently been one of the Beeb's top earners.
The sports broadcaster, 64, is due to step down from MOTD after a 26-year stint as the face of the BBC 's prime football programme. Veteran broadcaster Humphrys, with 34 years under his belt hosting BBC Radio 4's Today programme, reacted with scepticism to Lineker's voluntary salary reduction in 2019.
He said at the time: "We don't know how much, so ask me when we know. I don't know. I thought £1.75million for a wee bit of chatting was outrageous."
Lineker's departure from his long-standing position was announced last November, with the BBC later revealing that the baton would be passed to Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates.
In a recent discussion with Amol Rajan, Lineker hinted that the BBC might have been keen on him exiting the prominent MOTD role. "Well, perhaps they want me to leave," he said. "There was the sense of that."
He acknowledged how the cycle of broadcasting rights influenced his likely exit but noted that staying on for the FA Cup and World Cup has, in fact, put him in a favourable position.
Reflecting on his time at the helm, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Everton striker added: "It's time. I've done it for a long time, it's been brilliant. In the end, I think there was a feeling that, because it was a new rights period, it was a chance to change the programme.
"I think it was their preference that I didn't do Match of the Day for one more year, so they could bring in new people. So it's slightly unusual that I would do the FA Cup and the World Cup, but to be honest, it's a scenario that suits me perfectly."

Now, the beauty of our country is gracing the screens of the nation once again, through BBC's new comedy crime drama, Death Valley. It follows Detective Janie Mallowan, played by Gwyneth Keyworth and former TV detective John Chapel, played by Timothy Spall as they form an unlikely crime fighting duo in the Cynon Valley. Despite being set in Mountain Ash, the series was actually filmed across South Wales. You may be watching the second episode of the series, and thinking to yourself, "the scenery is beautiful, where was this filmed?" For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . During the episode, John and Janie join a walking group as they attempt to solve the murder of one of the members. The walking group are taking a hike through Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons), right next to the beautiful Blaen y Glyn waterfalls, when they discover a body at the bottom of the falls. The waterfalls are used as the scene of the crime. (Image: BBC/ Death Valley ) Gwyneth Keyworth even said that this was her favourite location to film, and can we blame her? The waterfall itself can be found within Talybont Forest in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. To reach the falls you can walk from the National Park's two car parks, Blaen y Glyn Isaf is the lower car park and Blaen y Glyn Uchaf is the upper car park. Each walk has a different grade of difficulty described by Natural Resources Wales. Lower Blaen y Glyn Waterfall Walk is described as moderate, as it is 0.8 miles (1.2 kilometres) long there and back and should take roughly 45 minutes. This trail is not waymarked, although they recommend reading t he information panel in the car park for the suggested route. Upper Blaen y Glyn Waterfall Walk on the other hand is described as being strenuous, with a one mile (1.6 kilometres) walk there and back, which should take roughly 1-1.5 hours. However if you're not one for a full plunge in what very well will be some cold water, there are also plenty of rock platforms to sit on beside the water. It's recommended you go when the weather is warm/dry, as the walk is slightly more difficult when it is raining and you'll be more likely to enjoy a cold plunge after your walk. So, pack up some cucumber sandwiches and a couple of scotch eggs and take a trip down Bannau Brycheiniog. Including The Old Ford Inn in Llanhamlach, which is also used as a filming location in the episode and just 20 minute drive away from the waterfalls.

Chelsea have been advised to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United by Stamford Bridge hero Frank Sinclair. The Blues face a difficult decision over Sancho's future at the club following a mixed loan spell in west London. While Sancho helped Chelsea qualify for the Champions League and win the Conference League, he struggled for consistency during his stint at the club. Chelsea agreed to sign Sancho on a permanent transfer this summer for around £25m when they took him from Manchester United on loan. Chelsea are yet to make their final decision but are leaning towards keeping Sancho beyond this season, providing he agrees to take a pay-cut. But ex-Chelsea Sinclair doubts Sancho is 'the answer' for Enzo Maresca's side and believes the money could be better spent on other additions. Sancho scored five goals and made four assists during his loan spell at Chelsea after being banished by former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. Asked if Chelsea should sign Sancho on a permanent transfer, Sinclair told the Daily Express: 'The only person who can answer that is the recruitment team. Captain Harry Kane, who led a large contingent of players at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya, greeted Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton before the race and offered his support for McLaren's Lando Norris. Kane was asked by former world champion Nico Rosberg if he had any advice for Norris, who is embroiled in a title battle with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. First time I've been at the Formula One.' Asked about upcoming opponents Andorra, Burn insisted: 'I don't know about formality, they're all tough games but excited for another camp and another World Cup qualifier.'
