Shocking reason you should never tie ribbon on your suitcase to help identify it – it may not even make the flight

FLIGHT experts are warning travelers not to use a popular bag-tracking method, as it may cause more harm than good.
Experts are urging flyers not to tie a ribbon around the handles of their suitcases.

A baggage handler, who goes by the name John, warned that tying a ribbon on the handle may cause issues with the bag being scanned.
'Ribbons that people tie onto their suitcases to help identify them can cause issues with the bag being scanned in the baggage hall,' he told RSVP Live.
'If the bag can't be scanned automatically, it can end up in manual processing, which could mean your bag doesn't make it to the flight.'
The handler also told flyers to take off old stickers on the bag and place your suitcase wheels up for less damage.
As for snacks, John told travelers not to pack marzipan in their bags.
'Don't ever pack Marzipan in your luggage,' he said.
'It has the same density as some explosives, so your bag will be removed and you'll be called from the plane for a bag search.'
Another flying expert warned passengers about the type of suitcase they choose to check in.
Emilie, a flight attendant of 16 years, told retailer House of Fraiser that travelers should never check a hard-covered suitcase.
"Passengers tend to think that hard-shell suitcases are more resistant than fabric ones, but it's actually the opposite.
Four countries Americans can fly to without needing a passport – and popular vacation choice where no visa is needed
"Hardcovers can get easily broken by the pressure of the other bags once they're all packed together in the hold."
The flight attendant added, "To avoid damage to your bag, I always recommend choosing a fabric suitcase as these are actually more durable.
"Picking one in a bright colour can help you spot your bag more quickly during baggage delivery. Just avoid white as it won't stay that colour for long!"
She also recommends going for a two-wheeled suitcase over a four-wheeled one.
What to do if you luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged
IT is an awful experience when your baggage does not appear on the carousel.
However, travelers can take steps to get their bags back.
What if baggage is delayed?
If your bag doesn't show up at your destination, make sure to speak to the nearest airline representative.
Airlines have a system that tracks where bags are and can see whether luggage has ever left an airport.
After getting as much information as possible from the representative, passengers can file a claim.
Once the bag is located, airlines will either deliver it straight to a flier's door or send it to the nearest airport.
What if baggage is lost?
Fliers should stay in close contact with airlines throughout the search for their bags.
Sometimes, airlines will tell lucky passengers their bags are gone for good.
Most airlines will declare a bag lost between five and fourteen days after the flight, but this can vary.
Airlines are responsible for compensating travelers for lost bags' contents as long as it doesn't surpass maximum liability limits.
Airlines must also reimburse any fees that fliers paid out for a bag to be transported if it was found.
What if a bag is damaged?
Airlines are also required to pay back customers for bags' contents that were damaged during flight.
However, the airline won't take responsibility for items that were destroyed because the luggage was improperly packed.
Most airlines also won't reimburse cash, electronics, fragile items, and perishables.
Anyone who has a bag damaged during flight should file a claim and discuss whether they can get a refund.
"[Four-wheeled suitcases] are never as durable or reliable as a two-wheel spinner and I'd always avoid them."
One TikToker, who goes by the username @allycase1, warned travelers to be aware of a common luggage tag faux pas.
In the video, the flight attendant shows a luggage tag with contact information written on it.
'Always make sure that your luggage tag has the contact information facing the other side,' she said in the video.
'I see so many people with their luggage tag and their information displayed for everyone to see.
'Their name, their address, their phone number, their email. That is way too much information for just anyone to have.'
She recommends just flipping personal information to the other side so its not out on display.
'In the event that your bag is ever lost, whoever has your bag is going to take out the tag and flip it to the other side.'

TSA announces game changing program to 'streamline security' that passengers will love

Your summer vacation just got a whole lot easier, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) beginning their new, streamlined program for international travelers. The new One Stop Security program (OSS) will be implemented from this week, as per Fox News. The program will allow passengers who are arriving in the U.S. from international airports with connecting flights to bypass TSA re-screening to board their next flight if it is domestic. It's expected to cut out long connection times, which typically include clearing U.S. Customs, claiming checked bags, occasionally rechecking bags, and then clearing TSA security, with American Airlines estimating it could cut down the connection time in airports by half. David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer at American Airlines, described the program as one of the most forward-thinking enhancements that the airline can bring to international travel. 'It delivers a level of convenience and time-savings that's never been available before to customers connecting from international flights,' he said. 'With this game-changing program [our] customers will spend significantly less time worrying about an onerous connection process and more time enjoying their travel journey.' American Airlines and Delta Air Lines partnered with TSA to launch the program in London's Heathrow International Airport on Friday. The process allowed customers traveling from London who were connecting through the airline's largest hub, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), to clear U.S. Customs right at the arrival gate. Delta Air Lines will launch its one-stop flight arriving at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport by the end of July, according to TSA. has reached out to TSA for comment. A 2024 article published in Airports Council International suggested that One-Stop Security will significantly reduce connection times and stress for transfer passengers. 'One-Stop Security significantly reduces connection times and stress for transfer passengers,' it noted. TSA Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl told Fox News Digital more airports globally will be added to the program in the month ahead. 'It really is a commonsense security approach for us to streamline security from abroad to the United States,' he told the publication. He added: 'It really underscores and piggybacks onto the president's and the administration's golden age of travel,' and promised there are 'no impacts to security.' Last week, the Department of Homeland Security revealed it is reviewing the 3.4-ounce limit, igniting hopes of a long-overdue update to airport security protocols. 'I will tell you, the liquids [rule] I am questioning,' Kristi Noem told NewsNation chief Washington Correspondent Blake Burman at the inaugural Hill Nation Summit. 'So that may be the next big announcement is what size your liquids need to be. We're looking at it.' Containers carrying liquids, aerosols, creams and gels over 3.4 ounces are not allowed in carry-on bags, and can only be taken onto flights if they are in checked luggage. TSA enforces the '3-1-1 rule,' which applies specifically to liquid storage in a carry-on. As per the policy, containers holding liquids must be the 3.4-ounce weight limit or less, all containers must fit in one quart-sized clear bag inside a carry-on, and only one of these bags is permitted per flier, according to the agency. The new policy comes as the U.S. prepares for a barrage of large events in the next few years, including the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup matches.

Edmunds: Five expert tips to make cross-country EV driving easy

The idea of a cross-country road trip in an electric vehicle might seem daunting. After all, it's not hard to envision getting stranded on the side of the road with a depleted battery or being stuck in a parking lot, charging for hours. But there are ways to easily avoid these worst-case scenarios. The experts at Edmunds have plenty of experience driving electric vehicles, and here they share their five best tips on how to make cross-country driving in an EV easy. Use EV route planning applications Minimizing the number of charging stations you visit and your time at them is key to efficient road-tripping in an EV. To accomplish this, use a route planning application. A route planner helps you determine where and when you should stop to charge to reach your destination. The navigation system in most new EVs typically has this functionality built in. You simply enter your destination, and the navigation system automatically calculates where you will need to charge along your route. In our experience, Tesla vehicles have the best route planning capability. EVs that utilize Google Maps as their onboard navigation system have a similar capability. Many of the latest EVs from General Motors, such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV, have Google Maps integration. Alternatively, you can use an EV route planning smartphone app such as A Better Route Planner (ABRP) or PlugShare. We prefer ABRP because it's available as an app or through an internet browser. It also shows more details at each stop, like the expected battery percentage. When using a route planner, stick to Level 3 fast charging stations when driving. Slower Level 2 stations will take hours but are ideal for overnight charging. Use Tesla charging stations The Tesla Supercharger network of fast charging stations is the largest in the country. We recommend using them on a cross-country trip because they are usually very reliable and have more charging stalls per location than most networks. Teslas have access to them and certain non-Tesla EVs are also eligible to use them, but most non-Tesla EVs need an adapter to charge at a Tesla Supercharger. Check with your local service center or search online to determine if your EV is compatible. If you have a non-Tesla EV that has access, change the settings in your route planner to include Tesla stations. If your EV cannot charge at Tesla stations, you'll need to utilize other third-party charging station networks. Some of the largest networks include Electrify America, EVgo and ChargePoint. Have a backup plan, and leave a range cushion When planning a route that does not use Tesla Superchargers, it's best to have a backup charging station for each stop. Charging stations can sometimes be out of order, and in some cases, like during a holiday or on busy highways, there could be long lines. To find the status of a specific charging station, download the app of the company the station belongs to. Make sure to leave yourself enough range to make it to your backup station as well. Stay in hotels with on-site charging stations Staying at hotels with on-site charging stations can save time and money. Hotel charging stations are typically Level 2 stations that can fully charge your battery overnight, allowing you to start your trip immediately instead of charging before you hit the highway. They are usually more affordable than fast charging stations, and in some cases, are free. One way to find hotels with charging stations is by using the PlugShare app. This app contains a database of charging stations, and you can filter it to show stations connected with lodging locations. Use charging stations that have amenities It's fair to expect that each charging stop you make in your EV will take 20-45 minutes. To make the most of that time, charge at stations with a convenience store, retail store or restaurant nearby. That way, you can use the bathroom, grab some stacks or even get a full meal while your vehicle is charging. Many charging stations are located near stores or restaurants, but not all. You can use Google Maps or similar smartphone apps to find out what's within walking distance of the charging stations you plan on using. You can change the stations your route planner recommends as long as they aren't too far away. Edmunds says Planning a cross-country trip in an EV takes extra effort, but doing it properly can make the journey nearly as smooth as in a gas-powered car. Give yourself access to as many fast charging stations as possible by choosing an EV that's capable of using Tesla Supercharger stations. ____ This story was provided to The Associated Press by the automotive website Edmunds.
