CDAA ramps up Khareef Dhofar preparedness
Speaking on national television, Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Al Bakheet Kashoob, Director of Civil Defence and Ambulance in Dhofar, said the authority began early preparations with a comprehensive risk assessment and on-ground mapping of high-traffic areas.
'Each year, after the season ends, we analyse incidents and visitor patterns to better allocate teams and equipment,' he said. 'This year, we have deployed specialised teams across more than 15 key tourist locations including Wadi Darbat, Al Mughsail Beach, and natural springs like Ain Athum and Ain Razat.' Khareef Dhofar Season — spanning late June to early September — transforms the typically arid terrain into a misty green haven, attracting tourists from across the Gulf and beyond. With waterfalls, flowing wadis and temperatures averaging 23–25°C, the season is one of Oman's most important tourism windows, offering significant economic stimulus to the local economy.
Lieutenant Colonel Kashoob noted that several new sites popularised on social media have drawn large crowds this year, many of which pose unforeseen safety hazards such as slippery soil, unstable cliffs, or lack of access to rescue services.
'These are not regulated tourism sites,' he warned. 'We are working with other agencies to monitor these locations, place caution signs and deploy trained staff where needed.' The CDAA's plan is not working in isolation. The response strategy is coordinated with Dhofar Municipality, the Office of the Governor of Dhofar and the Environment Authority, ensuring a unified effort that covers everything from environmental monitoring to regulating access to natural springs and beaches.
Specialised private contractors have also been brought in to supervise water bodies, monitor tide conditions, and ensure signage and awareness boards are in place. Tourist accommodations are being inspected to ensure they comply with civil defence safety codes.
'Our goal is to protect lives and property,' Kashoob said. 'This means not only being ready to respond, but also working proactively to reduce risks.' The seasonal surge in visitors during khareef brings a positive economic impact to Dhofar's tourism, hospitality, transport and retail sectors. But it also underscores the importance of crisis preparedness, environmental stewardship and institutional coordination — pillars that align with Oman Vision 2040's sustainable tourism and disaster resilience objectives.
With teams on standby 24/7, equipped with all-terrain vehicles, rescue boats and advanced communications systems, Dhofar's civil defence forces are operating on high alert.
Kashoob concluded with a message to tourists: 'Your safety is our priority, but it's a shared responsibility. Please follow instructions, avoid risky locations and cooperate with emergency personnel. We want everyone to enjoy khareef safely.'

SALALAH: Tourism and entertainment projects are a vital support for Khareef Dhofar Season, monsoon season, as they provide comprehensive destinations that meet the needs of visitors, boost economic and commercial activity; and open up broader horizons for investment and the employment of national talent. These destinations are particularly important during the Khareef Dhofar Season, as they serve as attractions for visitors from within and outside the Sultanate of Oman. They offer a mix of cultural, recreational and commercial experiences while also encouraging entrepreneurship; and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which positively impacts the local economy and the sustainability of tourism. Samharam Resort is one such destination for the 2025 Khareef Dhofar Season. It provides integrated facilities and services that combine shopping, dining; and cultural and recreational activities, attracting visitors of all ages. Mohammed bin Ahmed al Hadri, a site supervisor at Samharam Resort, said the resort hosts a consumer exhibition organised by Al Awail Company for the Management and Organisation of International Exhibitions and Festivals. The exhibition features 150 to 160 shops from various Arab and foreign countries, with diverse pavilions to meet visitor needs. Additionally, a handicrafts section includes about 28 shops for SMEs and low-income individuals, supervised by the SME Development Authority (Riyada). He added that the outdoor area includes a variety of restaurants, cafes and games for both children and adults. There is also a stage that hosts children's competitions and artistic performances. He noted that the "Rifle" section features cafes, many of which are managed by Omani youth and enjoys a wide turnout from visitors. Musallam bin Abdulsalam Al Rawas, owner of Sar Events Company, stated that this is the first year the "Rifle" event is being held at the resort, marking its third consecutive year during Khareef Dhofar Season. He explained that the event includes a large selection of restaurants, a family and youth entertainment area and a stage with Omani and Gulf performances, in addition to hosting talented artists from Oman and other GCC countries. He added that the event offers various competitions for all ages and annually employs young Omanis who are job seekers and freelancers. He noted that the number of employees this year exceeded 45 young people, with a public turnout that reflects the event's success as a recreational destination during the Khareef season. Regarding visitor impressions, Sufyan bin Ghassan al Rashdi from Al Dakhiliyah Governorate said Samharam Resort is an outstanding tourist destination for families and visitors. The variety of modern facilities and events creates a joyful atmosphere that enhances the pleasure of the visit. He emphasised the importance of increasing public facilities in the future to accommodate the large turnout. Ahmed bin Ali al Saadi from Musandam Governorate explained that his recent visit to Khareef Dhofar Season introduced him to the notable development in tourist and recreational events, with a diversity of programmes and integrated services that make the tourist experience more exceptional. Meanwhile, Mohammad al Sai'ari, a tourist from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, pointed out that the events and activities at Samharam Resort are a unique addition to Khareef Dhofar Season, combining entertainment and education. He expressed his admiration for the consumer exhibition, which features various local products such as incense and perfumes, along with offers that provide visitors with a pleasant shopping experience in an organised and attractive atmosphere.

Gulf Green Mobility Forum in Salalah on Aug 31
Salalah – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology will launch the Gulf Green Mobility Forum on August 31 in Salalah, bringing together experts from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to promote environmental sustainability in the transport sector. The event aims to encourage the use of clean and alternative transport methods and facilitate the exchange of expertise on sustainable mobility across the Gulf region. The forum will highlight policies and initiatives designed to achieve net-zero emissions and reduce carbon output in transportation. It will be preceded by specialised workshops including 'Gulf Youth Leading Change' at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment and 'Green Corridors for Gulf Ports' at the Rotana Hotel in Salalah. Several agreements for strategic partnerships in green transport will also be signed during the event. The forum has been described by officials as a milestone in the Gulf's pursuit of a cleaner future and a key platform supporting Oman's environmental sustainability goals aligned with Oman Vision 2040. It also aims to strengthen Gulf integration in low-emission transport and the transition to greener alternatives. Ahead of the forum, the ministry organised a virtual workshop with the GCC General Secretariat, involving representatives from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. It focused on practical outcomes and mechanisms to support sustainable mobility and boost environmental and economic cooperation in the region.
