Kelantan Cultivating Onions To Reduce Reliance On Imports By 2030

KOTA BHARU, July 15 (Bernama) -- A large-scale onion cultivation project spanning 30.85 hectares across seven districts in Kelantan is expected to reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported onions by 2030.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said Malaysia currently imports all of its onion supply from countries such as India and China.
'For example, in 2022, we imported 685,400 metric tonnes of big and small red onions worth RM1.58 billion. This clearly reflects our heavy dependence on foreign sources,' he said in a statement via a video posted on his Facebook page today.
He said the state government, through the Agriculture, Agri-Food Industry and Commodities Committee, is taking steps to strengthen the agriculture sector.
This includes onion farming, with several projects approved, ongoing, or in the pipeline in Bachok, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang and Tanah Merah.
In addition, the Kelantan Department of Agriculture has allocated RM100,000 to the Kelantan State Agriculture Development Corporation for onion cultivation at Agro Valley Rong Chenok in Pasir Mas.
Mohd Nassuruddin added that a one-hectare pilot onion farming project was launched in Kuala Krai last year, in collaboration with local entrepreneurs and the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar).
The project is expected to generate RM1.4 million in returns by 2025.
Based on this progress, he said the aim is to gradually cut down on onion imports, and by 2030, produce up to 30 percent of the country's supply locally.

East-West Highway upgrades a priority under Budget 2026, says Nanta

KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway, particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under Budget 2026, minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi says. He said the ministry has submitted a funding request to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the highway," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong here on Thursday (Aug 14). Earlier, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He added that the highway's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the East-West Highway and other federal roads in Perak. - Bernama

Malaysia and Bangladesh to establish cleaner, transparent recruitment system, says Muhammad Yunus

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Bangladesh have agreed to work towards establishing a cleaner and more transparent recruitment process for Bangladeshi workers. Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's government Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus said this was discussed in depth during his meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Tuesday. He also acknowledged existing flaws in the current process and stressed the need to "clean it up" to avoid problems for either side. "We had a very elaborate discussion on how to proceed without having trouble for the Malaysian government. "We both promised ourselves to clean up the system and to make it easier and transparent," he told Bernama. The Nobel Prize laureate said that while Malaysia needs foreign workers, Bangladesh also seeks to ensure that the recruitment of its citizens is transparent, allowing them to work abroad with dignity, proper rights and benefits. "Malaysia needs people and we need to have these people come here to make a living for themselves and their families. So both sides need each other. "There is no shortage of goodwill. It's a question of putting together and see where the things go wrong and then we track and clean it up," he said. As of February 2025, Bangladeshi nationals form the largest group of foreign workers in Malaysia, numbering at 898,970. They represent a critical workforce in the country, primarily employed in the construction, manufacturing, plantation and service sectors. The Home Ministry has implemented the Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) facility for Bangladeshi workers, effective Aug 8, underscoring Kuala Lumpur's commitment to ethical and regulated labour cooperation with Dhaka. Yunus was on a three-day official visit to Malaysia from Aug 11-14 at the invitation of Anwar, reciprocating the Prime Minister's visit to Dhaka in October 2024. – Bernama
