Kelantan MB urges preachers to tackle modern challenges, protect Muslim identity
KOTA BHARU: Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud has called on preachers in the state to deepen their understanding of contemporary challenges to effectively counter negative influences threatening Muslim faith and identity. He highlighted the urgency of this task, given rapid technological advancements and the widespread availability of information. 'Information spreads at lightning speed. New issues emerge daily, and preachers must thoroughly grasp them, especially those involving misleading ideologies aimed at weakening Muslim identity,' he said during the presentation ceremony of the Third Series of the Tafaqquh Fiddin Certificate. Mohd Nassuruddin also urged the state's Dakwah Halaqat Division to adopt a more structured approach in guiding the community. 'The syllabus for this programme was designed to address current societal needs, covering foundational Islamic studies while integrating modern knowledge and teaching methods,' he added. A total of 68 participants, including halaqat officers and assistants, completed the programme, which ran from July 2024 to March 2025. - Bernama

Kelantan onion farming project aims to cut imports by 2030
KOTA BHARU: A large-scale onion farming initiative spanning 30.85 hectares across seven Kelantan districts is set to reduce Malaysia's dependency on imported onions by 2030. Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud revealed that Malaysia currently imports all its onion supply, including 685,400 metric tonnes worth RM1.58 billion in 2022 alone, primarily from India and China. The state government, through the Agriculture, Agri-Food Industry and Commodities Committee, is implementing measures to strengthen the agriculture sector. Projects are underway or planned in Bachok, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang, and Tanah Merah. The Kelantan Department of Agriculture has allocated RM100,000 to the Kelantan State Agriculture Development Corporation for onion cultivation at Agro Valley Rong Chenok in Pasir Mas. A pilot project in Kuala Krai, launched last year in partnership with local entrepreneurs and the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar), is projected to yield RM1.4 million by 2025. Mohd Nassuruddin stated the long-term goal is to produce 30% of Malaysia's onion supply locally by 2030, reducing import reliance while ensuring stable domestic availability. – Bernama

Kelantan Cultivating Onions To Reduce Reliance On Imports By 2030
GENERAL KOTA BHARU, July 15 (Bernama) -- A large-scale onion cultivation project spanning 30.85 hectares across seven districts in Kelantan is expected to reduce Malaysia's reliance on imported onions by 2030. Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said Malaysia currently imports all of its onion supply from countries such as India and China. 'For example, in 2022, we imported 685,400 metric tonnes of big and small red onions worth RM1.58 billion. This clearly reflects our heavy dependence on foreign sources,' he said in a statement via a video posted on his Facebook page today. He said the state government, through the Agriculture, Agri-Food Industry and Commodities Committee, is taking steps to strengthen the agriculture sector. This includes onion farming, with several projects approved, ongoing, or in the pipeline in Bachok, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang and Tanah Merah. In addition, the Kelantan Department of Agriculture has allocated RM100,000 to the Kelantan State Agriculture Development Corporation for onion cultivation at Agro Valley Rong Chenok in Pasir Mas. Mohd Nassuruddin added that a one-hectare pilot onion farming project was launched in Kuala Krai last year, in collaboration with local entrepreneurs and the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar). The project is expected to generate RM1.4 million in returns by 2025. Based on this progress, he said the aim is to gradually cut down on onion imports, and by 2030, produce up to 30 percent of the country's supply locally.

Kelantan targets bigger onion output for nation
BACHOK: Kelantan aims to contribute significantly to the country's onion production with a total planting area of 30.85 hectares involving seven districts in the state. Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the implementation of the onion planting project in the state is a strategic step in strengthening the country's food security and reducing dependence on imported onions. 'This onion planting project is an important initiative that not only helps raise the income of state agri-entrepreneurs, but also contributes towards the stability of the country's food supply. 'To date, 26.85 hectares of land have been cultivated involving 52 agri-entrepreneurs in 37 project locations and the implementation will continue to be expanded with a total of 30.85 hectares covering the Bachok, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang and Tanah Merah districts,' he told reporters after opening the Kelantan State Onion Plantation Project 2025 at the Permanent Food Production Park (TKPM) in Telong, here today. He said that if successful, the 26.85-hectare site will produce 108 tonnes of onions with a value of approximately RM700,000 in just three months of planting. Mohd Nassuruddin also praised the commitment of the Kelantan State Agriculture Department which has made this pilot project a success with an allocation of RM1.4 million for this year following the successful implementation earlier last year. 'We are aware that 100 per cent of the country's onion needs are still imported from foreign countries such as India and China, with total imports in 2022 reaching 685,400 metric tonnes worth RM1.58 billion. This is a worrying figure and requires comprehensive efforts,' he said. He said Kelantan was among the states entrusted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to lead this project along with other states such as Perak, Selangor, Perlis, Penang and Pahang. 'it is hoped this project is the starting point for greater commitment by all parties to make the national food security agenda a success. Agriculture is no longer a peripheral sector but an important core to sustainable economic development. 'The state government and related agencies will continue to intensify strategic cooperation with the federal government to ensure that the national onion production target can be successfully realised by 2030, thus reducing the government's dependence on imported onions by 30 per cent,' he said.

Kelantan protects Orang Asli rights and welfare, including customary land
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of the Orang Asli community, in line with the state's inclusive development policy through allocations in the state budget each year, and this includes tanah adat (customary land) matters. Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said for matters relating to the issue raised regarding the customary land of the Orang Asli community in the Galas state legislative assembly, it is not an issue because there is no term as customary land for Orang Asli either in the National Land Code 1965 or the Orang Asli Act 1954. He said customary land only exists in Sabah and Sarawak according to state laws in both states relating to Orang Asli land in Sabah and Sarawak. 'Customary land does not exist in Peninsular Malaysia. The Orang Asli Act only mentions Orang Asli wandering areas which need to be gazetted,' he said. He said this at the winding-up session of the State Legislative Assembly at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here today. Mohd Nassuruddin said in Kelantan, Orang Asli areas are not gazetted under the Orang Asli Act but are gazetted under the reservation provisions of the National Land Code. 'The Orang Asli Act is not a law relating to land, but the National Land Code is a specific law relating to land,' he said. He said therefore that gazetting under the National Land Code has stronger legal standing compared to gazetting under the Orang Asli Act. He added that in Kelantan, several locations have been gazetted under Section 62 of the National Land Code such as the Aring 5 area, PT 11982, Kampung Meranto, PT 5612, HSD 8978 as well as several Orang Asli gazetted lots in the Lojing area.
