Kelantan onion farming project aims to cut imports by 2030
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud revealed that Malaysia currently imports all its onion supply, including 685,400 metric tonnes worth RM1.58 billion in 2022 alone, primarily from India and China.
The state government, through the Agriculture, Agri-Food Industry and Commodities Committee, is implementing measures to strengthen the agriculture sector.
Projects are underway or planned in Bachok, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang, and Tanah Merah.
The Kelantan Department of Agriculture has allocated RM100,000 to the Kelantan State Agriculture Development Corporation for onion cultivation at Agro Valley Rong Chenok in Pasir Mas.
A pilot project in Kuala Krai, launched last year in partnership with local entrepreneurs and the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar), is projected to yield RM1.4 million by 2025.
Mohd Nassuruddin stated the long-term goal is to produce 30% of Malaysia's onion supply locally by 2030, reducing import reliance while ensuring stable domestic availability. – Bernama

He said the implementation of flood mitigation projects (RTB) would protect the people and safeguard property, proof of the government's commitment to public safety. 'This RTB not only reflects the collective effort and cooperation of all parties but also demonstrates our ability to deliver quality work within the stipulated timeframe. 'Therefore, the Kelantan state government is deeply grateful and wishes to express appreciation to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation and JPS, in particular, for the approved development allocation,' he said. He said this when speaking at the DID Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference 2025 here today, officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Commenting further, Mohd Nassuruddin said that in dealing with the aftermath of the major floods that recently hit Kelantan, he had also requested JPS to immediately repair all flood-damaged infrastructure through a comprehensive and phased approach. 'The government will strengthen efforts to improve disaster management efficiency through drainage and irrigation structural plans in all flood-affected areas. 'These efforts should be implemented through the construction of concrete drains and more modern eco-friendly drainage systems. I hope that with the Eco-Friendly Drainage System Master Plan (PISMA) in major towns, we can reduce the risk of flash floods and ensure a resilient drainage system for the future,' he said. — Bernama

PETRA To Drive National Water Policy For Sustainable Supply
KOTA BHARU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) is committed to strengthening the implementation of the National Water Policy as a driver for transforming the national water sector, ensuring safe, viable and sustainable water supply for the people. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this effort will not only enhance the security of the country's water resources but also drive Malaysia towards becoming a dynamic water hub with potential contributions to economic development, job creation, and facilitating research and development (R&D). 'In this context, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) plays an important role in strengthening cooperation at the federal, state and local government levels towards integrated water management. 'The transformation of the water sector towards more efficient water management requires an integrated information system to safeguard water security and ensure ecosystem sustainability for a better future,' he said. He was speaking at the 2025 JPS Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference here today, which was also attended by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said efficient and sustainable water resource management remains one of the main focuses of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), especially as issues of clean water supply security and changing rainfall patterns due to climate change become increasingly critical. Under Thrust A7 — Strengthening Flood Mitigation and Adaptation — the government emphasises implementing more comprehensive, integrated and innovative strategies to increase the nation's resilience to increasingly complex and high-impact flood disasters. 'As the main technical agency in managing national water resources, PETRA hopes JPS will continue to lead in ensuring integrated, sustainable and resilient water resource management in Malaysia. 'JPS is also expected to strengthen its role as a facilitator of the national water policy at the state and district levels so that there are no gaps in planning and implementing water-related projects,' he added.
