Parolee arrested for kidnapping, raping nine-year-old in Cape Town
The suspect was sentenced to 25 years in jail for rape and indecent assault in 2008. He was placed on parole in November 2024.
Correctional services department (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo on Friday confirmed the man's arrest in connection with the rape of a young girl in Hanover Park.
The child was found in the suspect's house during a frantic search by the community on Wednesday.
'The individual appeared in court under [a certain name],' said Nxumalo.
'However, DCS records identify him [under a different name]. Community corrections officials have since verified his identity and confirmed he is a parolee under supervision of the Cape Town community corrections office. [He] was sentenced on March 13 2008 to 25 years' imprisonment for rape and indecent assault.'
Nxumalo said after serving the minimum portion of his sentence at Voorberg Correctional Centre the man was released on parole.
'His parole period was scheduled to run until May 22 2044.'
Nxumalo said after the man's court appearance on Friday, the department would initiate the process of revoking his parole.
'This will be concluded within the prescribed 14-day period, in line with DCS internal procedures.
'The developments are gravely concerning. The department has launched an internal investigation to review and assess the effectiveness of monitoring measures applied during his parole.'

Kariega kidnapping accused allegedly demanded R1.1m
The two men charged with the kidnapping of an elderly Kariega woman appeared in the town's magistrate's court on Wednesday. Inquiry into Mkhwanazi allegations to start hearing evidence on September 1
The commission of inquiry into allegations of corruption in the criminal justice system is due to begin its hearings on September 1. This was announced by commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga, a recently retired Constitutional Court judge. President Cyril Ramaphosa established the commission to look into allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused police minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering with police investigations and overstepping his role when he ordered the disbandment of the police political killings task team. In July Madlanga said of the inquiry's mandate: 'The entities and persons, people we must investigate are the SAPS, metro police of the three metros in Gauteng, the National Prosecuting Authority, the State Security Agency, the judiciary, correctional services and any institution in the criminal justice system. 'These entities and people are to be investigated in relation to infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and associated institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.' Madlanga said after three months the commission wanted to be in a position to submit an interim report to the president and make recommendations regarding action that needs needed to be taken. Two youths arrested over attempted robbery of MPs in Cape Town
DA parliamentary chief whip George Michalakis named the MPs as Ian Cameron, Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell. They were returning from an oversight visit to the police training college in Philippi when they were accosted. "Gotsell was hospitalised, but is not in a critical condition, and Cameron sustained minor injuries. Cameron was able to act quickly and in self-defence to prevent further injury to any of them. All three MPs are safe."
