Should You Forget Amazon? Why These Unstoppable Stocks Are Better Buys
There's no denying it. Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has been one of the market's most rewarding stocks for nearly the past three decades, rallying more than 270,000% since its 1997 initial public offering. This thrilling performance is a big reason so many investors are betting on the company now -- they're hoping for more of the same magic. And maybe they'll get it. As the old cliché reminds investors, though, nothing lasts forever. Yesterday's winners aren't necessarily tomorrow's. With that as the backdrop, here's a closer look at three unstoppable names other than Amazon that you might want to consider adding to your portfolio. 1. Shopify It's not exactly a coincidence that one of the stocks worth considering besides Amazon is the un-Amazon, or anti-Amazon. That's Shopify (NASDAQ: SHOP). Simply put, Shopify helps brands establish and manage their own e-commerce presence. When the worldwide web was still relatively young and online shopping was still new, companies were content to use Amazon's high-traffic website as a sales platform. Things changed, though. As time marched on and its business matured, became crowded and competitive (including with Amazon itself). Sellers eventually figured out they'd be better served by their own online store. That's what Shopify facilitates. And it's doing more and more of it. Although the company doesn't disclose its customer count any longer, somewhere on the order of 5 million stores sold a confirmed $292.3 billion worth of goods and services last year, translating to $8.9 billion worth of revenue and $1.1 billion in net income for Shopify itself. Those figures are up 24%, 26%, and a swing from a loss of $1.4 billion (respectively) year over year, extending a long-standing growth streak. Analysts expect a similar growth rate for at least the next several years, too. There's actually an even longer growth runway ahead of Shopify, however. See, for as big as the e-commerce industry has become, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that only about 16% of domestic retail spending is done online. The rest is still done in-store. While there's some consumer spending that will only ever be made in person, that's a lot of potential business to win. The shift away from third-party platforms to home-grown e-commerce stores only bolsters Shopify's potential upside. 2. Rocket Lab The world's been sending satellites into orbit since the late 1950s, and even putting people on the moon as of the 1960s. Space flight has become so commonplace, in fact, that many people no longer think much of it. The next era of rocketry is likely to rekindle this lost excitement, though, not so much because it will look different, but because it will happen so much more often and will serve so much more purpose. It will also be more cost-effective, largely because the development of the newer rocketry technology has been privatized. Rocket Lab USA (NASDAQ: RKLB) is one of these for-profit rocket companies. As of the latest count, Rocket Lab made 64 successful launches of its reusable Electron rocket, deploying a total of 225 fairly small satellites. This proven solution is going to remain in demand indefinitely, as small orbital satellites become more and more important to telecommunications service providers. Indeed, there are more than 40 satellites in Rocket Lab's current launch backlog. But the company isn't stopping there. It's thinking bigger. Literally. Its Neutron rocket is a medium-lift launch vehicle capable of putting up to 1,500 kilograms worth of payload en route to Mars or Venus, making it at least a partial competitor to SpaceX's Falcon. Using Rocket Lab's rocket to get equipment and personnel headed to the moon, of course, will be easy by comparison. Rocket Lab USA isn't profitable yet, and probably won't be at any point in the immediate future. Be patient, though. Goldman Sachs expects the global satellite market to grow sevenfold between now and 2035, jibing with Global Market Insights' forecast for average annualized growth of 14.6% through 2034 for worldwide commercial space launch business. 3. Carvana Finally, add used car dealer chain Carvana (NYSE: CVNA) to your list of unstoppable stocks that have become better bets than Amazon. You know the company. Although it's not the first or only chain of used car dealerships, it certainly seems like the biggest and best known. And by some measures it is. For the record, however, Carvana itself estimates it only controls about 1% of the United States' highly fragmented used car business. That's not an indictment of its marketability, though. That tiny number mostly underscores the potential growth awaiting an enterprising outfit with the wherewithal to consolidate some of this industry with clever marketing and the smart use of technology. That's Carvana, of course -- not that the company needs any serious help in the growth department. Yes, higher import tariffs on new cars and automobile parts ultimately works in favor of the used car market. Carvana doesn't exactly need the newly raised tariffs to remain in place to thrive, however. Raw inflation was doing plenty to help this company prior to President Donald Trump taking office. The company's 2024 top line of $13.7 billion was up 27% from 2023's lull, bouncing back from the swoon following its post-pandemic sales surge. Analysts are calling for similar growth at least through 2027. And, with Standard & Poor's Global Mobility reporting the age of the average car on U.S. roads now at 12.8 years, the outlook makes sense -- a swell of car owners are soon going to be forced into making these purchases, before repairs and maintenance of their current cars become costlier than they're worth. It's arguably the riskiest of the three stocks in question here just because its big run-up from March's low has pushed it beyond analysts' consensus target of just over $300. It wouldn't be crazy to wait for at least a small pullback. Just don't get stingy. The bigger-picture backstory here is a firmly bullish one. Should you invest $1,000 in Shopify right now? Eli Lilly vs. Novo Nordisk: Which Stock Is the Winner of the Weight-Loss Drug Boom?
The global weight-loss drug market is experiencing exceptional growth, projected to expand from around $144.6 billion in 2023 to an estimated $381.5 billion by 2033. Two pharmaceutical giants, Eli Lilly (LLY) and Novo Nordisk (NVO), dominate this market. Both companies have created GLP-1 receptor agonists that have transformed obesity treatment: Eli Lilly's Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Zepbound, and Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide). Let's see which company is ahead of the game and has the best investment case right now. The Case for Eli Lilly Stock Valued at $684 billion, Eli Lilly has been a standout performer in the global pharmaceutical industry. Aside from its obesity treatments, it is well-known for developing groundbreaking treatments for autoimmune diseases, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and other conditions. LLY stock has fallen 6.4% year-to-date, compared to the S&P 500 Index's ($SPX) gain of 0.1%. Recently, Eli Lilly announced that Zepbound has demonstrated superior efficacy in weight loss compared to Novo Nordisk's Wegovy. The SURMOUNT-5 trial found that participants on Zepbound lost more body weight and waist circumference over 18 months than those on Wegovy. This superior efficacy is due to tirzepatide's dual action as a GLP-1 and GIP agonist, which boosts weight-loss effects. Financially, Eli Lilly reported a 45% increase in revenue in the first quarter of 2025, reaching $12.73 billion, thanks to strong sales from Mounjaro and Zepbound. Adjusted earnings increased 29% to $3.34 per share during the quarter. Mounjaro, in particular, saw a 113% year-over-year sales increase to $3.8 billion worldwide. Zepbound's sales increased threefold from the same quarter last year. Aside from the success of its weight-loss drugs, the company's non-incretin portfolio includes successful oncology, neuroscience, and immunology drugs, which are driving growth. The company anticipates 2025 revenue to be in the range of $58 billion to $61 billion, representing year-over-year growth of 28% to 35%. Eli Lilly has taken proactive measures to capitalize on the weight-loss drug boom. The company has handled supply chain issues more effectively than Novo Nordisk, resulting in improved product availability. Last year, the company launched Mounjaro in all major European markets and provided early stage access in China. In order to increase accessibility, the company has formed partnerships with telehealth providers and launched direct-to-consumer initiatives. Furthermore, Lilly's investment in orforglipron, an oral GLP-1 receptor agonist, has yielded encouraging results in Phase 3 studies. Patients lost significant weight, and the convenience of a pill form could transform obesity treatment, making it more accessible and appealing to a larger patient base. On Wall Street, Eli Lilly has earned an overall ' Strong Buy ' rating. Of the 25 analysts who cover the stock, 20 rate it a 'Strong Buy,' two a 'Moderate Buy,' and three recommend a 'Hold.' The average analyst price target of $991.46 suggests a 34.7% increase from current levels. Furthermore, the Street-high estimate of $1,190 implies that the stock could rally by up to 62% over the next year. The Case for Novo Nordisk Stock Valued at $311.7 billion, Novo Nordisk is a Denmark-based pharmaceutical company specializing primarily in diabetes care, obesity treatment, and other chronic disease therapies. Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Wegovy have been instrumental in the company's growth. However, Eli Lilly's weight loss drugs have demonstrated superior efficacy, challenging Novo Nordisk's market dominance. Novo's stock has fallen nearly 20% year to date, compared to the overall market. In the first quarter of 2025, Novo Nordisk reported earnings per share of 6.53 DKK, in line with analyst expectations. Sales rose 18% year on year to 78.08 billion DKK, led by a 15% rise in Ozempic sales and an 83% increase in Wegovy sales. Despite these gains, the company faces significant challenges due to increased competition and shifting market dynamics. As a result, Novo Nordisk lowered its full-year guidance, projecting 2025 sales growth of 13% to 21%, significantly lower than Lilly's projections. Analysts who cover the stock expect Novo's revenue to grow by 25.5%, followed by earnings growth of 26%. While Eli Lilly's drugs have demonstrated superior efficacy, according to Leerink Partners analyst David Risinger, most people are unaware that Zepbound outperforms Wegovy. As a result, Novo continues to hold 65% of the market, while Lilly holds 34%. However, this may soon change. On Wall Street, Novo Nordisk stock has earned an overall ' Moderate Buy ' rating. Of the 18 analysts who cover the stock, eight rate it a 'Strong Buy,' seven say it is a 'Hold,' one says it is a 'Moderate Sell,' and two suggest a 'Strong Sell.' The average analyst price target of $101.93 suggests a 44% increase from current levels. Furthermore, the Street-high estimate of $160 implies that the stock could rally by up to 128% over the next year. The Verdict: Eli Lilly Takes the Lead Both Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk continue to strengthen their incretin portfolios. However, based on clinical efficacy, market performance, strategic initiatives, and leadership stability, Eli Lilly currently has a competitive advantage over Novo Nordisk in the weight-loss drug market. Overall, Eli Lilly stock represents a better long-term investment.

‘What we can offer is speed': Modular housing business owner on tackling supply
Inside Ironwood Manufactured Homes' factory in Woodstock, N.B., workers pump out a house a week. Owner Mark Gaddas points to a home that's three days into construction. The drywall is being installed, which he says typically wouldn't happen in on-site construction until the house is weather-tight. It's one advantage to building indoors. 'That's one of the reasons why we can speed things up over time,' he said. Founded in 2018, Ironwood is a few months away from moving into a new factory that's ten times its current size. There, they will be able to build more houses and add efficiencies, such as automation. Provincial and federal governments invested a combined $2.5 million in repayable loans to help. Modular Housing (Sarah Plowman, CTV News) 'We strictly build custom modular houses right now. The new facility will give us the capacity to get into multi-residential,' said Gaddas, noting workers could build hotels, universities and dormitories. 'We'll have anywhere from ten to fifteen houses under construction at all times.' Factory-built housing makes up a small percentage of Canada's housing market, but Prime Minister Mark Carney has said prefabricated and modular housing are the future. He has pledged $25 billion in financing to prefabricated home builders as his government aims to double the pace of Canada's home construction. Carney has also pledged to order housing units from manufacturers in bulk to create sustained demand. 'It's not the silver bullet to the housing crisis,' said Gaddas. 'It's part of the solution. It isn't the ultimate solution. What we can offer is speed.' At the University of New Brunswick's Off-site Construction Research Centre, Director of Innovation and Operations Brandon Searle notes how off-site construction has been around for more than a century and often increases in popularity following or during a crisis. He believes prefabricated and modular housing are a piece of the housing crisis puzzle. 'I'd say they're a large piece,' Searle said. Searle explained this kind of construction isn't necessarily cheaper than traditional homes, but builds happen faster, with fewer workers and less waste. Costs are also more certain, since a lot of decisions happen before construction starts. The industry faces barriers to scale up, Searle notes, such as high capital investment costs, disjointed policies across jurisdictions and the need for demand that businesses can count on. Modular Housing (Sarah Plowman / CTV News) 'Creating that sustainable demand is a role that the government can play, but also incentivizing them to invest in innovation and automation,' he said. Securing financing or insurance can also be a challenge, and it's something the research centre is looking into to figure out what needs to change and what role Ottawa can play in underwriting projects. Kevin Lee, CEO of the Canadian Home Builders' Association, notes the main reason not many of its members build prefabricated and modular homes is because the traditional house construction industry is already efficient as is and is made of mostly small crews. 'That really has to do a lot with the boom-and-bust nature of the housing industry,' Lee said. 'The system kind of operates like a factory but instead of the house moving down the assembly line, the workers move through the house, but do the same repetitive activities, house to house.' Lee says it's more labour intensive but requires less overhead costs. Policy changes are needed for factory-built housing to become more widespread, including consistent rules around the planning and approval process, he adds. 'At the municipal level, you cannot build the same house city, to city, to city, because every city has different bylaws, zoning requirements, interpretations of the exact same provincial building code, which vary city to city, and sometimes within the city, which makes doing anything at scale incredibly difficult,' Lee said. Borrowing best practices Ironwood's new factory will add automation, including a saw to cut lumber and possibly a machine that, with the push of a button, installs nails or screws. To borrow best practices, Ironwood is looking to European countries, such as Sweden, where modular housing reshaped the homebuilding industry. 'The automation that they have is much further ahead than where we are,' said Gaddas, adding there's one manufacturer in Sweden with 'a zero-labour line.' 'You have robots essentially building all the compartments of the houses that we're talking about.' Mathieu Laberge, Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, said while this kind of housing is marginal in Canada, 90 per cent of homes in Sweden are made with some off-site component. It didn't happen overnight. Laberge explained that in the 1960s, Sweden decided it was the technology of the future and the government began funding projects to create a baseline demand. 'Now, they don't need any more government support, because it's a self standing industry. And that's the point we're at in Canada,' Laberge said. Laberge and Gaddas point out there's a lot of misconceptions around modular housing, like assuming it's one-size-fits-all and that these houses can't be customized. 'That's not true,' said Laberge. 'They're good-looking, they're high-quality, well-insulated, weather-appropriate for Canada. And so, these are all misconceptions that we need to overturn.'
