Noida razes illegal shops to revive stalled road project after SC nod
The move comes after the Supreme Court recently upheld the Authority's claim to the disputed land, dismissing a decades-old legal challenge.
Acting on the directions of its chief executive officer, the Authority's civil department, along with local police, carried out an anti-encroachment drive near the Voda Mahadev temple. Officials said that nearly 200 metres of the proposed road had been blocked by 15 to 20 shops.

The land had been acquired in 2001-2002, but the road project was stalled after a villager contested the acquisition in court under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894. The Allahabad High Court dismissed the plea in Jan 2021, noting that the land parcel was already vested with the govt. After the petitioner's death, his legal heirs moved the Supreme Court, which dismissed the appeal on Nov 21, 2024.
With legal and physical obstacles now removed, construction of the remaining stretch is expected to begin shortly.

The new road will offer direct access from sectors 46 and 47 to sectors 99 and 98, easing traffic on the existing route via sectors 100, 101, Hajipur and Sector 104. Commuters from Noida City Centre, sectors 12, 22 and nearby areas heading toward NRI Road (Sectors 99-100) are also set to benefit.
Around 100 officials from the Authority, led by deputy general manager Vijay Kumar Rawal, oversaw the demolition. Backed by a large police presence, workers used five earthmovers to raze shops, permanent structures, and shanties. Debris removal is likely to continue until Saturday.

Telangana car owners may not benefit from Centre's Annual Toll Pass scheme
File photo NEW DELHI: Private car owners in Telangana won't be able to avail the Annual Toll Pass scheme for National Highways (NHs) and expressways to be launched by the Centre on Aug 15, as vehicles registered in the state have not yet been migrated to the Vahan database (central registry of vehicles). The annual pass, to be issued from next week, requires real-time validation of vehicle class through the Vahan portal. Union transport secretary V Umashankar, in a letter addressed to Telangana chief secretary last week, sought the 'personal intervention' of the top state official to expedite the migration of the state's vehicle data to Vahan portal and ensure 'equitable access to the nationwide facility for road users'. In his letter, Umashankar highlighted how the Centre had reached out to the state govt in May this year for merger of state registers for driving licence (DL) and registration certificate (RC) of vehicles with the national registers —Sarathi and Vahan -- but the same has not happened yet. Except Telangana, all other states have come on board, officials said. But bankers and practitioners consider this a violation based on Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) notifications. Now, to get the income tax (I-T) office and the enforcement off their back, the property buyers are trying to fix the error. How? By entering into another arrangement with the builders: these investors are preparing to remit fresh funds to builders under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) while cancelling the earlier credit card transaction on the grounds that it was a mistake. Once done, they would receive a refund from the builder. Otherwise, they would have to sell the property and bring back the money. Compounding involves a person paying a fine after accepting the violation. Some of the buyers are reluctant to approach the regulator, preferring to lie low after cancelling the earlier credit card transaction. CARD USE-WHERE & WHAT The LRS allows a resident individual to transfer $250,000 a year to buy assets abroad as well as shop online from India. Under the rules, when a person uses ICC from India to buy stuff online from foreign sellers, the spend is part of the LRS limit. Such current account expenses while travelling abroad are excluded from LRS. (Perhaps, those who wiped their cards for an apartment during a trip to the Emirates mistakenly believed the expense would not consume their LRS limit). However, paying with the ICC for overseas property purchase is not considered within the regulations, irrespective of whether the card is used in India or abroad. It is understood that payments for such acquisitions must be through banking channels.
