NADI Plays Key Role In Promoting Safe Internet Usage

GENERAL
JOHOR BAHRU, April 21 (Bernama) -- The National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) plays an important role in promoting awareness of safe internet usage among Malaysians, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said NADI would assist in the implementation of the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as part of the MADANI Government's proactive approach to ensuring that safe internet practices remain a priority.
According to him, this is in line with the rapid growth of technology usage and various online applications in Malaysia.
'We have strengthened several programmes with the aim not just for the local community to come to these NADI centres, but also for the teams to go out.
'Our efforts include the Safe Internet Campaign, where we send managers to schools to raise understanding and awareness among students, teachers and parents about the importance of ensuring children, in particular, stay safe online,' he said.
He said this at a press conference following a working visit to the NADI in Taman Sri Skudai here today.
Also present were State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin and Skudai state assemblyman Marina Ibrahim.
Fahmi said the government's efforts to expand the NADI network are progressing smoothly, with 1,099 centres planned nationwide, and nine more currently under construction.
At present, he said, Johor has 101 NADI centres, with around 10 per cent of the total 2.2 million NADI members nationwide located in the state.

Malaysia retains foreign investors despite US-China tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite geopolitical tensions between the US and China, foreign investors remain in Malaysia. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia has not seen any cancellations of investment commitments so far. "The ones already in Malaysia continue to stay, and those committed have not pulled out, but those yet to commit are reconsidering," he said during a press conference at the Regional Socialisation of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026-2030 event on Thursday (June 12). Tengku Zafrul said the ministry is pleased with the country's investment performance for the first quarter, announced on Wednesday. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) reported that Malaysia secured RM89.8bil in approved investments for the first quarter of the financial year 2025 (1Q25), a steady 3.7% year-on-year increase despite a challenging global economic backdrop. These investments, spread across 1,556 projects in manufacturing, services, and primary sectors, are set to generate over 33,300 new employment opportunities for Malaysians. "Usually, the first quarter is softer as decisions are made towards the end. We were quite pleasantly surprised with this number," said Tengku Zafrul. However, he cautioned that making investment forecasts for the future is not easy, as many companies are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to dynamic geopolitical issues. He said Malaysia is currently maintaining its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast for this year. Commenting on trade negotiations between the US and China, he said Malaysia views the development positively. "Things are showing progress in the right direction. We will have a positive spillover if these two countries can do more together," he said. Tengku Zafrul stated that negotiations between Malaysia and the US have been ongoing virtually. He will visit the US on June 18 to meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He said the main goal is to reduce the 24% tariff, and for certain sectors important to both countries, Malaysia aims to negotiate further to lower the tariff rate to below the 10% floor tariff. "It is not going to be easy. What is important is to show that Malaysia and the US's relationship in terms of trade and investment is complementary. We are not competing against the US," he said. "A lot of things we do actually strengthen and complement US businesses both in the US and Malaysia. So it is a win-win relationship," he said. He said the ministry is also enhancing enforcement to address trade diversion issues and ensure Malaysian exporters are considered.

Investors hesitant amid global economic concerns, says Tengku Zafrul

Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it is becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Foreign investors are taking a cautious approach towards new investments in Malaysia due to global economic uncertainties, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today. He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. Advertisement 'Those who have committed have not pulled out. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. 'We also want to ensure that our local companies exporting to the US – especially in sectors such as furniture and downstream palm oil – are taken into account,' Tengku Zafrul said, adding that these sectors 'are not really in competition' with American industries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Meanwhile, the Hawana 2025 Media Forum will take place on Saturday at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall, WTCKL, at 9am, discussing the topic "Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?' before continuing with a technology sharing session titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?' The forum, co-organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), also serves as a platform for the Protem Committee of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) to present their views on the future of the media following the approval of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024 in Parliament in February. The highlight of Hawana 2025 on Saturday will certainly be the inauguration of the celebration by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Dewan Merdeka WTCKL. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching are also expected to attend. Also expected to attend are Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as the top management of media companies in the country. At the event, the Prime Minister is expected to present the Tabung Kasih@Hawana contributions to veteran journalists in need of assistance, as well as to award prizes to the winners of the Pesta Pantun Hawana-Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, which was held for the first time on May 31. This year's Hawana celebration will also witness the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Award and Hawana 2025 Special Award to individuals who have made significant contributions not only in the field of journalism but also in shaping public minds through their works. To further enliven the Hawana 2025 celebration, two well-known local singers, Dayang Nurfaizah and Anuar Zain, will also be performing. The Hawana 2025 celebration continues throughout the year with media sports events that highlight traditional elements and a series of tours to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. A total of 79 strategic partners, an increase from 44 last year, have sponsored and contributed to the success of Hawana 2025, thus proving that Hawana is now garnering attention not only from government departments and agencies but also from corporate companies. May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the "Utusan Melayu" newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who serve as a medium for shaping an informed society. To further add to the Hawana 2025 celebration, promotional banners have been installed along several highways including PLUS, MEX, as well as major roads around the capital, not to mention displayed on LED screens. - Bernama
