Gretel by Rebecca Spurgeon is a reimagined version of the classic Grimm fairy tale

The Hindu18-06-2025
Jagriti Theatre's upcoming play, Gretel, reimagines the classic German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, made famous by the Brothers Grimm. The original story follows two siblings, Hansel and Gretel, who try to make their way back home, after being abandoned in a forest. There, they wander into a magical house and fall into the clutches of a wicked witch. Through their courage and quick thinking, they trick the witch, escape captivity and return home.
Directed by Rebecca Spurgeon, Gretel explores the concept of home, and who defines it. 'For me, the main idea in Hansel and Gretel is ultimately about the search for home and all through the play, we look at how the idea of home can vary from person to person,' says Rebecca.
The central idea that the pay deals with is that home does not have to be a specific place or a specific person; you can create that sense of home in any place you feel you belong. 'We wanted to show how a journey is about asking questions, the minute we become comfortable with where we are, and if we stop asking questions, then we may not be able to move forward.'
'In this play, the character Gretel has been developed as a person who always asks questions, and, because she wants to know, she stands a chance of finding more answers, hence being an important force in helping both of them return home safely.'
Ashiqa Salvan, who plays Gretel, says the character has been developed as a larger representation of women in society. 'In the story, Hansel is seen as the solution maker, and Gretel is seen as someone following him. We developed her character, where she asks and contradicts, she found her own way of doing things, which ultimately helps both of them,' says Ashiqa.
She also pointed out how stories are normally written and told in a manner where the men are usually the protagonists. ' Women invariably are presented as supporting or following the protagonist. We tried to tell the story in a way that Gretel is the protagonist.'
Akhshay Gandhi, who plays Hansel, says, 'Hansel plays the role of a responsible adult, showing he is in control, even though he might not have a clue about what to do next. The character brings out the humanity of a person, what it takes for someone to be responsible when you are not equipped to do it.' The one takeaway, Akhshay says, for people to be empathetic to caregivers.
The music for the play will be performed by Ananth Menon and Vedanth Bharadwaj. 'The songs were written even before the script came out, so a lot of the script was improvised based on the music,' says Ananth.
This production is a collaboration between Jagriti Theatre and Okapi.
The play will be staged at Jagriti theatre on June 20 at 7.30 pm, and June 21 and 22 at 3.30 & 7.30 pm.
Tickets for the play will be available in Bookmyshow.com

Pune hosts exhibition to mark Austrian poet Ernst Jandl's birth centenary

Written by Viraj Mandar Paranjape To mark the 100th birth anniversary of Austrian poet, writer, and translator Ernst Jandl, the Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan Pune, in collaboration with the German Department of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), has organised a special exhibition celebrating his life and work. The exhibition features 24 multisensory installations in German, English, and Marathi, and seeks to bring alive Jandl's experimental style through 3D structures, soundscapes, visual projections, and artistic interpretations. Dr Fetz, who has written extensively on post-war Austrian literature, underlined how Jandl used poetry as resistance against the misuse of language in propaganda, turning words into tools of liberation rather than manipulation. Known as a pioneer of German-speaking concrete and sound poetry movement, Jandl explored the very texture of language in his works — whether through sound poems that only reveal their meaning when spoken, visual poems where the arrangement of words is central, or satirical verses that comment on politics, war, and human behaviour. Poems such as Schtzngrmm — imitating the rattling of machine guns during World War II — showcased his ability to convey meaning through pure sound. Speaking at the inauguration, Alicia Padros, Deputy Director and Head of the Language Department at Max Mueller Bhavan Pune, said the exhibition highlights Jandl's groundbreaking use of 'sound, structure and space' and reflects the institute's effort to promote German culture in innovative formats. The programme also featured a skit by university students depicting the grim emotions of World War II, along with a Kathak-based dance performance by Aishwarya Joshi on Jandl's poem 'West l du mich.' The piece interpreted the poem through classical Indian dance, connecting German literature to Indian traditions and highlighting how art and language can bridge cultures. Vaishali Dabke, Projektreferentin Bildungskooperation Deutsch / Project Manager Educational Services at Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, added, 'We want to encourage more and more Punekars to learn foreign languages, break barriers, and explore German through poets like Ernst Jandl. This exhibition at The Box Studio offers an exclusive experience that goes beyond the page.' Curated by Chaitanya Modak, the exhibition is thematically arranged around five motifs explored by Jandl: being one with nature, being human, being civilised, being warriors, and the idea of death. Elnaaz Norouzi: I couldn't audition for several films because of my bold image

Despite earning recognition with projects such as Sacred Games, actor Elnaaz Norouzi continues to be associated with a bold image, something she admits has been limiting. 'It might be hard to break my bold image in the movie industry. There are so many projects that I can't audition for, it is tough,' she says. Elnaaz Norouzi The Iranian-German actor reveals this was partly why she was hesitant to take on her role in the upcoming Masti 4. While tight-lipped about details of Milap Zaveri's adult comedy, she recalls, 'I actually had inhibitions initially; I was thinking I would not do the film until I met Milap sir. He narrated the script to me and convinced me that the script is different from the previous instalments of the franchise.' Speaking about her part, she explains, 'I have a special appearance as well as a dance number in the film. This time, it was actually the cameo that led to the dance number instead of the other way around. The dance number was something that came in much later.' On her upcoming release, Elnaaz sounds upbeat. 'It is a cool script. I totally enjoyed listening to it when Milap sir narrated it to me, and I am sure that people will enjoy watching it,' she signs off.
