Roosters roll as Sharks, Knights enjoy first NRLW wins
The Roosters prevailed 24-10 at Jubilee Stadium in Sydney for back-to-back wins to start their year, while the Sharks overwhelmed the Raiders 56-6 in Canberra.
In Townsville, the Cowboys came crashing back to earth as the Knights scored a 26-6 win after leading 14-0 at the break.
The lead changed three times in the top-four clash between the Dragons and Roosters until Hannah Southwell was sin-binned in the 55th minute for a late tackle on Sydney half Jocelyn Kelleher to open the floodgates.
Olivia Kernick and Keeley Davis ran in quick tries to take the spoils.
But coach John Strange wasn't pleased with 15 errors, compared with nine by the Dragons, and a poor completion rate of just 64 per cent.
"I was disappointed in how we played, but the good thing is it's only round two and there's so much improvement in this team, and that gets me excited," he said.
Much was made before the game of the clash in the centres between rookie Indie Bostock and Jillaroo Isabelle Kelly, with the pair giving as good they got, although Kelly scored the Roosters' opening try.
"Obviously Izzy is a really good player, but Bossie did a great job on her, and who knows, with a few more years' experience she (might) be the next Isabelle Kelly," Dragons captain Raecene McGregor said.
A four-try haul by Emma Verran was the backbone of the Sharks' 10-try victory at GIO Stadium.
Verran went try-less in 2024, with her last four-pointer back in September 2023. But her acceleration through gaps and her support play brought rewards on Saturday and meant she is just the fourth player - and the first from Cronulla - to score four tries in an NRLW game.
The milestones didn't stop there. Prop Stephanie Falkner, who came on to the bench for Filomina Hanisi after an ACL injury last round, is a Sharks junior and scored a double on her first-grade debut.
Back-rower Rhiannon Byers also claimed a double, while five-eighth Georgia Hannaway landed eight conversions.
"We came here wanting to show what Sharks footy looks like and I thought the girls did really well - they were relentless," coach Tony Herman said.
The Raiders had not started an NRLW season with two losses until now. Their only points on Saturday were to ever-reliable winger Madison Bartlett - the 28th of her career.
After a 20-6 win over the Titans last round, it took the Cowboys 68 minutes to post their first points through utility Alisha Foord. But there was no denying the Knights' resolve to bounce back after a 26-12 loss to new NRLW team, the Bulldogs.
It was also a welcome return for the Knights' Jillaroos hooker Olivia Higgins, who missed round one through suspension, but scored her side's fourth and final try on Saturday.

Khabib Nurmagomedov hints at Jack Della Maddalena vs Islam Makhachev superfight for Madison Square Garden
Jack Della Maddalena appears to have his first title defence already in the works, with the Australian on a collision course with former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. The 28-year-old captured welterweight gold at UFC 315, stunning fans with his victory over Belal Muhammad. Now, a monumental title fight awaits at Madison Square Garden. MORE: UFC Perth main event confirmed as Kiwi gets title audition Makhachev is expected to move up a division for this bout after vacating his lightweight belt earlier this year. His coach and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov hinted at the matchup during a recent fan question-and-answer appearance in New York. "This is his deal with the UFC," Nurmagomedov said. "I don't deal with the UFC. This is his problem, but we have [a] deal with them where he's gonna fight at Madison Square Garden and they said yes." The UFC is yet to officially confirm the blockbuster showdown, but looking at their schedule in years past, a return to the Garden seems likely to go down in November. For Della Maddalena, the challenge is enormous. Makhachev enters the bout with the momentum of four consecutive title defences - two of those over Della Maddalena's countryman Alex Volkanovski. The idea of the Russian stepping up in weight class adds intrigue, presenting questions over whether or not he can implement his dominant wrestling game against a bigger opponent. If finalised, the event would put both men in the frame for fighter of the year discussions, a welcome achievement to their growing legacies.

Wales are facing a nervous wait on an injury suffered by co-captain Alex Callender with the Rugby World Cup fast approaching. The influential number eight went down just four minutes into Wales' 36-5 second Test defeat in Sydney after turning her foot in a collision. Callender, 25, limped off gingerly before returning to the side line on crutches. "She will go for a scan as soon as possible," said Wales head coach Sean Lynn. "She's in a boot, we'll see what happens after the scan and go from there. I'll probably be able to give you a better update next week. "I've spoken to her, she's obviously upset, however she seems all good about herself, so fingers crossed." Wales suffer heavy Australia loss in final World Cup warm-up Australia 36-5 Wales: Visitors escape record loss with late call - reaction Lynn is due to name his 32-strong World Cup squad on 11 August, with their tournament opener against Scotland in Manchester on 23 August. Callender was outstanding in Wales' 21-12 win in the first Test in Brisbane, topping the statistics with 24 tackles, 16 carries and three turnovers. She was leading the side for the first time after being named co-captain for the tour of Australia and the Rugby World Cup with fellow back-rower Kate Williams. "I'm gutted for her, we were both excited to come into this game to see how we were going to work together for the World Cup," said Williams. "But it's rugby and things happen. Hopefully we'll get to do it a bit more in training and take it into Scotland."

Pakistan wins 3rd T20 by 13 runs to clinch a 2-1 series victory over West Indies
LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — Saim Ayub posted a half-century in a 138-run opening stand with Sahibzada Farhan and then took a key wicket as Pakitsan beat West Indies by 13 runs Sunday to clinch the Twenty20 cricket series 2-1. Pakistan posted 189-4 and then bowled tightly enough to restrict West Indies to 176-6. Pakistan's opening partnership ended when Farhan was out for 74 runs in the 17th over, his 53-ball innings finishing when he hit a low full-toss from Shamar Joseph (1-57) directly to Shai Hope at long-off. Ayub continued until the last ball of the penultimate over of Pakistan's innings, when he hit a full ball from Jason Holder (1-34) to Sherfane Rutherford in the covers and was out for 66 from 49 deliveries. West Indies raced to 33-0 after two overs in reply, taking 16 off the first over from Hasan Ali and 17 in the second from Mohammad Nawaz. Haris Rauf slowed the run-rate in the third over, which only went for five runs, and then snared the first West Indies wicket when he had Jewel Andrew (24 from 15 deliveries) caught by Hasan Ali in the fifth over with the total at 44. Alick Athanaze scored 60 from 40 deliveries, sharing further partnerships of 30 with Hope (7) and 36 with Rutherford until he mis-timed a fuller, faster delivery from Ayub and was caught at short thirdman. At that point, West Indies slipped to 110-3 in the 13th over. The series was tied 1-1 going into the decider after Jason Holder took four wickets and then smashed a boundary off the final ball of the second game to lift West Indies to a thrilling two-wicket victory on Saturday. It was the first T20 victory for West Indies in seven matches, a span that included a heavy 5-0 series defeat to Australia, on top of a test series sweep last month. Pakistan won the series-opener by 14 runs. ___
