
Somni Just Became Los Angeles's First Three-Michelin-Star Restaurant
Just six months after Aitor Zabala resurrected his ambitious Spanish tasting menu restaurant, Somni, in West Hollywood, it has become Los Angeles's first three-Michelin-starred restaurant. The previous iteration of the restaurant inside the SLS Beverly Hills, which earned two Michelin stars, closed in August 2020 amid the pandemic. This is the first time a restaurant in Los Angeles has been awarded three stars since the guide arrived to the city in 2008.
Somni's three-star designation was revealed in a video posted to the Michelin Guide's YouTube channel in advance of the 2025 ceremony on June 25 in Sacramento. The video quickly circulated on Reddit, but is now marked as unlisted. A Michelin Guide representative confirmed the Somni three-star designation to Eater.
Zabala's impressive resume includes restaurants like Alkimia, Abac, El Bullí, Akelarre, and numerous José Andrés restaurants. He opened the first version of Somni, which means 'dream' in Catalan, in 2018 as a 25-course tasting menu with 10 seats at a blonde wood curved counter. (The first version of the restaurant was opened with Andres as a partner, though he is no longer involved.) 'Somni is our American dream — our opportunity to add to the legacy and culture of Los Angeles,' he told Eater in 2018. But just two years later, the restaurant closed when its contract, along with the Bazaar's, was terminated with the SLS Beverly Hills.
After years of anticipation, Zabala debuted the current iteration of Somni in West Hollywood in November 2024. The restaurant is a fully realized version of the dream he had in 2018, encompassing multiple spaces that include a tree-lined courtyard and an auditorium-like dining room. Somni seats 14 diners across two curved counters, set in a high-ceilinged dining room. Zabala and chef de cuisine Ismael Parra, along with a team of cooks, assemble intricate dishes as guests look on, like a Parmesan feather and a dashi meringue crowned with caviar. An evening here is as much of a meal as it is an exhibition of Zabala's work as an artist and chef, weaving Spanish influences and California sensibilities.
Somni's recognition as the first three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles is a significant milestone for the city. Before the 2025 ceremony, Los Angeles restaurants had only ever been awarded two stars. Undoubtedly, Zabala has ushered in a new era of Michelin-caliber dining in Los Angeles — and in California.
In a complete rebirth, former two-Michelin-star restaurant Somni has opened in a new West Hollywood location under chef Aitor Zabala. Somni occupies a cloistered set of buildings just north of Santa Monica Boulevard serving precise Spanish-inflected modernist tasting menus to a rounded duet of countertops. The high-ceiling space acts as a theater of sorts to Zabala's kitchen crew, assembling dashi meringue fish topped with Astrea caviar or escabeche mussels dressed with borage flowers. YouTube Increases Age Limit for Livestreaming

YouTube's looking to avoid potential risks with youngsters livestreaming in the app, with the platform announcing that it's increasing its age limit for livestreams, with live broadcasts to be restricted to users aged 16 and up from next month. YouTube will soon also remove livestreams that display youngsters without the presence of an adult. As explained by YouTube: 'As of July 22, we are increasing the minimum age required to livestream to 16 years old. This means that creators will need to be 16 or older to be able to livestream on YouTube. Additionally, livestreams featuring 13-15 year olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have their live chat disabled and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. Please note that, in the future, we plan to take down these livestreams and the account may temporarily lose its ability to live stream.' The change is likely to impact gaming streamers the most, who often start in their teens, with the new restriction now delaying their content ambitions. But it may well be an important, valuable change in protecting younger users from exploitation and risk, though YouTube's hasn't shared any official reason for the update. Though there have been various reports of teens being exposed on livestreams over the years. At the same time, YouTube is also currently embroiled in a debate in Australia as to whether the app should be included in the government's upcoming age restrictions on social media use, with Australian officials set to implement a 16-year-old access limit for all social media apps. YouTube has been exempted from this, due to its educational value, but the nation's eSafety Commissioner has this week called for YouTube to be included in the change, as it also poses a risk. Maybe, upping the age of livestreaming could help YouTube pushback against this, by reiterating that social elements are not its focus, and that its social video tools, like livestreaming, are already restricted to over 16s anyway. I don't think that law changes in Australia would be the only motivation on this front, but it could be another reason for the update, which, presumably, won't have a major impact on overall streaming activity. Really, it seems like a sensible update, which will keep kids safe, and it's good to see YouTube looking to take a stronger stand on this front. Here Are the 2025 Michelin Star Winners in Los Angeles
Chefs and restaurateurs from across California gathered at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center in Sacramento on June 25 for the 2025 presentation of the Michelin Guide California. At the annual ceremony, the Michelin Guide awards restaurants Michelin stars, as well as green stars, which recognize sustainability practices. Coming into this year's ceremony, Los Angeles and Orange County did not have any three-star restaurants. In 2024, Vespertine was the only restaurant to be given two Michelin stars. Last year's ceremony also saw chef Gilberto Cetina's Holbox, a Mexican seafood counter in Mercado La Paloma, gain its first Michelin star. Rebel Omakase in Laguna Beach, Uka at Japan House in Hollywood, and chef Jordan Kahn's Meteora were also awarded their first star. Although the ceremony focuses on awarding stars, it also provides updates on which restaurants have lost stars. Last year, Beverly Hills omakase restaurant Sushi Ginza Onodera and Palms kaiseki restaurant N/Naka each lost one of their two stars. This year's ceremony kicked off with some excitement even before the first award was officially announced. The Michelin Guide (accidentally) posted a video in advance of the ceremony announcing that Aitor Zabala's acclaimed tasting menu restaurant Somni had received three Michelin stars, making it LA's first three-Michelin-starred restaurant. The video was unlisted and subsequently removed. The rest of the evening held more excitement for Los Angeles, with chef Ki Kim of Restaurant Ki receiving the Michelin Young Chef Award, and the restaurant becoming LA's first Michelin-starred Korean restaurant. Mori Nozomi and Silver Omakase also received one star. Later in the evening, Michael Cimarusti's seafood tasting menu restaurant, Providence, received three stars, bringing Los Angeles up to a total of two three-starred restaurants. Sushi Ginza Onodera and Hana re Sushi did not retain their stars. Michelin published its first Los Angeles guides in 2008 and 2009, before exiting the city for a decade. (San Francisco has had its own guide since 2006.) In 2019, the California Tourism Board wooed Michelin back with $600,000 to cover the costs of expanding the guide to the entire state, including a return to Los Angeles. Michelin did not award stars in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned with a ceremony in 2022. Although Michelin stars are highly coveted, the Michelin Guide has been criticized for its focus on fine dining experiences, which often feature elaborate omakase-style menus or chef-driven dinners. Alongside the stars, the Michelin Guide also awards Bib Gourmands to restaurants that offer 'good quality, good value cooking.' The Bib Gourmand designation tends to highlight more affordable restaurants — at these restaurants, diners can expect two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for about $50 USD before tax and tip. Still, the Michelin Guide struggles to cover the breadth and diversity of dining scenes in cities like Los Angeles. And while recent years have seen a positive shift toward highlighting restaurants that fall outside the fine dining rubric, many local favorites and outstanding street vendors still go largely unrecognized by the guide. The tasting menu blends classic technique with a modern sensibility, global inspiration, and sources the freshest and most sustainable seafood, often wild-caught from American waters. At no point during the meal will you doubt its impeccable quality, especially while savoring dishes such as a tart of lobster mousse and box crab set in a crab beurre blanc, or roasted monkfish with cauliflower and shaved black truffles. Longstanding signatures like the soft-poached egg with uni and breadcrumbs or salt-roasted Santa Barbara spot prawns make for luxurious add-ons. Somni (West Hollywood; Contemporary cuisine) Chef Aitor Zabala and his dedicated team have awakened Somni, or "dream" from a long sleep and have fashioned this revamped iteration as a distinctly personal and unique dining experience. Tucked away just off Santa Monica Ave., the dining room's soothing, creamy palette with light wood and glass is marked by a colorful bull's head from the original spot, hinting at the Spanish-inflected cuisine. A procession of small bites is meticulously arranged and endlessly creative, sating diners with an abundance of rich flavors and textural interplay (think mussel escabeche, gazpacho, or the iconic shiso tartare tempura). All the while, the kitchen and service teams are in lockstep as they create and serve these arresting dishes. Two MICHELIN Stars Enclos (Sonoma; Contemporary cuisine) Concealed inside an 1880 Victorian on the Stone Edge Farm Winery property, once inside this glittering workshop, guests enter a rarified realm. An opulent tasting menu marries global flavors, refined technique, and exceptional ingredients, including produce sourced from their two farms, all shot through with subtle nods to Chef Brian Limoges's New England roots. Take, for example, a clever "lobster roll" croustade made up of spiny lobster tartare in a crisp shell, or a clam chawanmushi that subtly evokes the flavor of chowder. The fireworks continue through to dessert, where a breathtaking sorrel ice cream is decorated with edible leaves flavored with makrut lime and pomegranate. All the while, diners will find the staff effortlessly charming, making the experience all the more magical. Kiln (San Francisco; Contemporary cuisine) Industry veterans Chef John Wesley and general manager Julianna Yang have combined their talents at Kiln, where the warehouse space is warmed by personable service and the kitchen delivers artful creations. The tasting menu leans Nordic, highlighting preservation techniques like curing, drying and fermentation in dishes whose simplicity is belied by intricate techniques and compelling flavor combinations. The creative energy is consistent throughout the meal, offering plenty to impress guests. Opening snacks like a crispy curlicue of puffed beef tendon captures this ethos, while others, like a squab breast lacquered with burnt honey and served with a truffled jus, display a classical bent. One MICHELIN Star Lilo (Carlsbad; Californian cuisine) Good things often come in small packages, and it's certainly true of Lilo, where guests are welcomed to a moveable feast beginning on the heated patio with an array of small bites before moving into the petite dining room. Chef Eric Bost and his team take clear pride in providing an extra level of care in their dishes, evidenced in plates like dry-aged Japanese kinmedai paired with a ragout of geoduck and bone marrow or 40-day dry-aged beef ribeye with preserved gurumelo mushrooms, seaweed, and bordelaise. Halfway through, the dishes shift from savory to sweet for a one-off orgeat ice cream topped with celery root bushi and Ossetra cavia, and later concludes with a myriad of desserts like sweet cream gelato topped with hoja santa and finger lime. Mori Nozomi (Los Angeles; Sushi/Japanese cuisine) Chef Nozomi Mori's sushi counter stands apart from the pack, both for its excellent sushi and for its hospitable staff in the front and back of house. Plan in advance to visit this special spot, where there are just eight seats at the wood counter. While the fish is flown in several times a week from Japan, local, seasonal produce is worked into nearly every dish. Even the smallest details matter here, as evidenced by the Japanese ice imported for use in their five-course tea pairing. Begin with a number of dishes, like chawanmushi with gingko nuts, before enjoying the well-executed nigiri. Mochi accompanied by matcha prepared by the chef herself is an elegant final act. Restaurant Ki (Los Angelese; Korean Contemporary cuisine) You'll need to read the instructions sent ahead of time to find the entrance to Chef Ki Kim's restaurant, but any navigation woes are quickly put to rest once you're inside this ten-seat spot. The contemporary Korean tasting menu pulls in global influences, and meals begin with a few bites such as shirako gimbap, a shell filled with truffle rice and diced kimchi, or crispy, tender octopus in a creamy sauce with octopus head and gochujang. Charred sugar snap peas with stillhead trout roe and tuna or creamy pasta made with perilla seed and topped with fresh winter truffle display a creative flair. Main dishes include the likes of barbecue roasted squab with foie gras sauce, and 45-day dry- aged dairy cow with golden beet jus and Korean bone broth. A mushroom ice cream sandwich seals the deal. Silvers Omakase (Santa Barbara; Sushi/Japanese cuisine) With just a handful of seats and a small staff, this omakase from Chef Lennon Silvers Lee is ever-changing. Some things change daily, while others change weekly, but one thing you can always expect is well-executed dishes made with rice from Japan that is milled in house, and fish that is sourced both locally and from Japan and then dry aged. Arrive early and enjoy a glass of sparkling wine before being called in, as all guests are seated and served at the same time. Enjoy one or two small dishes before a parade of nigiri, which may include hamachi, shima aji, as well as bluefin tuna. Their uni rice is deliciously mixed with wasabi and topped with masago arare for a bit of crunch, marking the end of the savory dishes before a dessert of sorbet made in house. Sun Moon Studio (Oakland; Californian cuisine) A slightly clandestine air still prevails outside this inconspicuous little spot, but the secret is out: the handful of seats inside are hotly in demand. Chefs Alan Hsu and Sarah Cooper have both worked in some of the country's most celebrated kitchens, but here channel their talents on a more intimate scale. Their shared vision emerges in a mercurial seasonal tasting menu that dutifully celebrates the wealth of Californian ingredients, spanning squab to rockfish and wild mushrooms to citrus. The style is pared down and technically precise, letting products shine while adding a spark of personality, as in Dungeness crab with yuzu kosho butter, perched over silken tofu.
