HANNAH BETTS: These are the best anti-ageing SPFs to give women over 50 amazing skin, from just £8.65

Daily Mail21-04-2025

If you've been enjoying some rays of glorious sunshine this Easter, you know what I'm going to say: 'Sisters, SPF 50 now!' Ideally, you will have been deploying this during winter anyway. The sun emits harmful rays all year, even on cloudy and rainy days, even through windows.
Dermatologists consider year-round SPF vital for everyone. And it's particularly important at moments of hormonal flux – hello, midlife – which can make skin neurotically sensitive to damage.
Still, the stats are lamentable. Only 22 per cent of Britons apply SPF daily, and a third of those are using less than the (minimum) factor 30. A bit of SPF in your moisturiser or foundation is not enough - we don't spread it sufficiently thickly. One in seven never apply sunscreen, and just over half only bother when it's glaringly sunny.
We oldsters are the worst: 60 per cent of those aged 45-54 only using SPF when the sun is blazing. Small wonder that - while melanoma skin cancer rates have dropped among the young - for those in our fifties the rate is up by as much as 102 per cent.
There is no point throwing money at complexion restoring, if you're not taking the one essential measure to prevent premature ageing. The good news: SPF tech and textures are now so brilliant that the right sunscreen will not only shield your skin, but make it look fantastic. Here's my pick of the crop.
1. My SPF all-rounder hero
Heliocare 360° A-R Emulsion SPF50+
£32.99 Shop
Heliocare 360° A-R Emulsion SPF50+ (£32.99, Boots.com) was my pash of summer 2024, and I am yet to discover anything to supplant it. Heliocare has just become the first SPF to be included in Boots's new Specialist Skin section, dedicated to dermatologically-backed solutions.
Accordingly, it provides very high-level, full-spectrum protection (blue light from screens included – yes, we have to fret about that too), plus supercharged antioxidant benefits. But, I adore it because it makes my complexion look dreamy, imparting a lustrous gleam. Sensitive-skin friendly, it minimises redness, making a beautiful, stay-all-day make-up base. The business.
2. My SPF salve for dry skin
Thank You Farmer Sun Project Water Cream SPF50
£22 Shop
Dry skin in the sun can happen – and make you even more susceptible to damage. Thank You Farmer Sun Project Water Cream SPF50 (£22, Boots.com) is a godsend, formulated with hydrators and oil for dewy resilience.
Yet, it's not in the least heavy, feeling like the loveliest day cream. Dryness, be damned.
3. My perfect SPF for oily skin
Supergoop's Protec(Tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF 50
£40 Shop
US favourite Supergoop's Protec(Tint) Daily Skin Tint SPF 50 (£32, Boots.com) arrived on our shores this March, and is already the daily obsession of my oily-skinned tester.
Non-greasy, sweatproof, in 14 flexible shades, it offers protection-plus-pigment in a matte, second-skin finish, defence against blue light, radiation and pollution. Belt-and-braces brilliance.
4. The SPF make-up primer I swear by
Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Brightening Sun Serum
£38 Shop
For women who demand their make-up be both exquisite and long-stay, Oz's Mecca Cosmetica is the answer. Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF50+ Brightening Sun Serum (£38,) is incredible: a shield enhanced by 3 per cent niacinamide to smooth lines and hydrate, while light-reflecting pearls melt into the skin for a radiant glow. Stunning skin guaranteed.
5. My favourite mineral SPF
Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50
£65 Shop
There are two types of sunscreen: mineral and chemical. Mineral formulas are made from natural ingredients forming a physical barrier reflecting rays away from the skin. Chemical formulas absorb into your skin, then reflect UV light back.
Some users worry about this chemical content, preferring mineral blocks. Traditionally, these were pasty and greasy affairs. No longer! My favourite of these new-broom, beautifully-textured mineral screens is Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 (£65,). It's weightless, hydrating, and – yes – sensationally silky.
6. My luxury SPF hot take
Sisley Sunleÿa Anti-Ageing Suncare SPF50+
Sometimes one is ready to splurge on sunscreen-as-skincare. I'm currently rather partial to the Sisley Sunleÿa Anti-Ageing Suncare SPF50+ (a seriously hefty £228 for 50ml) making me feel like a soignée Parisian, who learnt skincare on her mother's knee.
Forget the dense and mask-like SPFs of old. This simply feels like a fancy, feather-light face cream. Then you remember that you are stalwartly sun-shielded.
7. My brilliant budget SPF
Garnier Ambre Solaire Anti-Age Super UV Protection Cream SPF50
As with posher options, Garnier's excellent Ambre Solaire Anti-Age Super UV Protection Cream SPF50 (now £8.65) also boasts skincare benefits such as hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, reducing the appearance of wrinkles by up to 22 per cent.
Then top up every couple of hours with Garnier Ambre Solaire Over Makeup Super UV Protection Mist SPF50 (£12.99). Job done.

Race You To It
From the makers of UK's best-selling swish bronzer, Benefit Hoola Matte Powder Bronzer (from £17), comes the all-new Benefit Hoola Wave Bronzing Balm (£33, sephora.co.uk).
Buttery, gliding, weightless, it sets for waterproof, sweat- and smudge-proof 12-hour wear. Full of omega fatty acids for a modern, nourished, fresh-from-the-beach gleam.

Cosmetic Craving
I've never been an eye-product devotee, yet I keep coming back to Perricone MD High Potency Growth Factor Firming & Lifting Eye Serum ( £64, sephora.co.uk). In general, serums are preferable to creams around an ageing eye because heavy textures can cause puffiness.
More specifically, this wonder really does boast visible lifting, firming and de-puffing effects. After one application, my eye area looked fresher, more open, and less lined come morning, thanks to Dr Perricone's polyamine (cell-growth stimulating) tech. Reviewers agree, the consensus being: impressive, this works, even on heavier crow's feet. Currently on offer at sephora, I strongly recommend investing.

Woman loses four stone and keeps it off for five years without giving up ice cream

Woman loses four stone and keeps it off for five years without giving up ice cream Losing weight doesn't have to mean missing out on the things you love, as Brianna discovered after her weight loss transformation Brianna saw a big change on her weight loss journey (Image: Simple ) All too often, we're told that in order to get our diets in check and lose weight, we need to give up all the delicious 'unhealthy' foods that we love. But not only does this make our lives miserable (what's a Sunday night film without a cheeky bit of chocolate?) but it can actually make it harder to lose weight and keep it off. Indeed, Brianna Alexander has shared her weight loss story that saw her shed more than four stone (27kg, 60lbs) without giving up her favourite treats, and she's kept it off for five years with a sustainable, long-term nutrition plan using weight loss app Simple. This also allowed her to utilise popular weight loss method, intermittent fasting. "Throughout this journey I have seen many ups and downs of fasting. Reflecting on my nutrition has really taught me a thing or two on losing weight and how it affects your energy levels, your confidence, and completely transforming your life in terms of working out," said Brianna, who lost a total of four stone, four pounds . READ MORE: 'Super shiny' lip gloss slashed in price in Boots £10 Tuesday deal READ MORE: Straighteners that are 'just as good GHD' are now less than £30 "I've actually been able to learn a lot more about my nutrition and some of the things that make you feel better when you eat certain foods, and why you crash after eating a big meal. Things like that I've learned through the Simple app." Brianna's success lies in her diligently reshaping her diet with the help of the Simple app, which is currently 60% off with code REACH60. The cutting-edge AI coaching app creates bespoke slimming programs based on lifestyle, activity levels, health goals and timeline - and encourages a balanced diet that boasts sustainable, long term results thanks to the fact users can still carry on enjoying their favourite treats. Simple app £29.99 £17.99 Simple Get deal now Product Description Shoppers can now use the code REACH60 to save 60% off simple weight loss plans on The Simple App. " I downloaded the app in 2020 because I didn't really have a sense of where I wanted to go in terms of my fitness goals and my healthy lifestyle goals," said Brianna. "I knew that I wasn't on the right path at the moment. I was stress eating a lot, binge eating overnight and really not liking the way my body was looking and feeling and my energy was really low all the time. I was constantly taking caffeine throughout the day to feel energy, to feel motivated to do things like working out." Brianna said that using the Simple app, which helps users with a personalised diet plan that can include intermittent fasting - which involves eating healthy meals during set hours of the day, and fasting for the remainder of the time - helped her rethink her nutrition and overhaul her lifestyle. "The first, biggest misconception I had when I started fasting was I would be hungry all the time and it's going to make me really upset and angry," she said. "After I started fasting, I realised that I actually felt hungry the entire time and I couldn't figure out why exactly I was. I eventually did some more digging and the app helped me understand why I was hungry, and that's how I learned about my nutrition. "My nutrition was very poor and low at the time. Every time you input a food into the Simple app and it gives you a daily nutrition score. As a reflection of a low or bad diet, I was feeling terrible throughout the day, so sleepy and tired and just not my best self." The Simple app makes creating a balanced diet easy and sustainable (Image: Simple ) Brianna said that when she started on her healthy eating plan in 2020, she was eating a lot of fast food and forgoing fruits and veggies. The Simple app helped her identify what she should be including in her diet, helping her set up a meal plan, grocery list and workouts, with ongoing support from the built-in AI coach Avo. " That was able to be my template for the week of things I should be doing and goals I should have throughout the week," she said. "All that was tailored to my own personal goals and if you're a new user to it and you don't know where to start, that's one hundred percent where a new user should start." " I really am grateful that I am tracking it, that I'm staying consistent, the app makes it really easy," she continued, adding that while ice cream used to be her biggest weakness, she found a way to still enjoy her favourite treat. " Ice cream used to be one of my biggest weaknesses in terms of not getting the nutrition I needed, but eventually I had found some alternatives that I now eat that provide lower calories and more proteins," she said. "So I'm not completely without ice cream, I can still have it. But making sure my nutrition is on-point in the most consistent thing about your diet." Brit Marcel Botes also found the AI coaching app vary effective (Image: Simple ) There are plenty of other apps out there that help users lose weight in a similar way to Simple. For example, Lifesum is free to download and allows users to track their meals, showing calorie and macro information, with guidance about what to eat and even an intermittent fasting tracker. Similarly, Noom is a weight loss app that focuses on healthy lifestyle changes and behavioural psychology, with personalised plans and support for users. However, Brianna is far from being the only user to find success with Simple: plenty of people have taken to Trustpilot to share their experiences. "Scanning your meal makes it so easy. But what I didn't expect was how good coach was at giving great recipes and healthy options to make changes to the recipes," said one user. Another said: "The app is very informative and helpful in keeping me on track to be successful in reaching my goals regarding my weight loss journey. I have been delightfully pleased with the results I am achieving at this time. I'm glad that I found this particular app. It's truly on point and helpful in my journey in getting to where I want to be physically and mentally." However, some users did flag some issues. One said: "A tutorial is needed for all the features for optimal use." Another said: "I am learning a lot, but if I'm honest it is too much checking in. I know this is to help me get on track, but there are times it is just too much." Article continues below A user added: "The Simple Life App is easy to follow, very useful, and informative. I can definitely see myself using this app long term!" The Simple app is currently 60% off with code REACH60.

Kate Garraway's secret health issue that made it 'dangerous' to be Derek's carer

Kate Garraway has opened up on the tough times she had while trying to care for her late husband Derek Draper while also dealing with her own health issues Kate Garraway has revealed the health issue that "worsened significantly" while she was caring for late husband Derek Draper. The political lobbyist died in January 2024 following a four year health battle after he contracted long Covid. Good Morning Britain host Kate, 58, was his primary carer, but she has candidly opened up on the health issues she also faced at the time. The presenter said at one point, her conditions made h er feel it was "not safe" for her or her family. ‌ She confessed that the stress of looking after her husband triggered her own health scares. And she admitted that it seemed as though surgery would be likely. ‌ Speaking to the Sun, Kate revealed: "The stress of fighting for Derek to get the support he needed along with the physical demands of being a primary carer 24 hours a day was such a strain that my body was feeling the effect. "And there were other signs too. Missed appointments. No time to rest. My autoimmune thyroid condition — neglected during Derek's illness — has now worsened significantly. Surgery now looks likely. It could have been avoided." She also explained how she had been so sleep deprived as the system tried to work out how to best look after Derek that she felt it was no longer safe. She claimed the situation wasn't safe for her, her kids or Derek. Kate went on to describe calling health services in desperation following three weeks of no support. She told them at the time she had refused to get off the phone until she was given an answer on how things were going to proceed. "In the end, the person on the other end of the phone, who was also clearly exhausted, told me, 'There is nothing I can do but — and this isn't official — you are not alone and what I always say to people is take him to A&E and leave him there, then they legally have to do something.' ‌ Exasperated, Kate wondered how it had come to this stage. "I didn't take him, I just couldn't, physically or morally," she said. Kate also admitted she knows she was lucky to have had family around her who were able to help. However, she knows some people were - and are - in worse situations. "Carers are the backbone of this country — but are being broken under the weight," she said. She then pleaded with Rachel Reeves not to forget the carers in her spending review. Last year, shortly after Derek's death, Kate praised their two children and the way the handled the heartbreaking situation. And she revealed the sweet message her daughter Darcey gave her dad during his struggles. Kate revealed how Darcey told Derek: "If, dad, you can't do this, it's okay. Don't worry about us." She confessed she too had had similar conversations with her husband.
