PSX records gains as KSE-100 crosses 147,000 in early trade

Market sentiments remained positive at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) as investors reacted positively to a sovereign credit rating upgrade and a steady stream of robust corporate earnings, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining nearly 600 points during the opening hours of trading on Monday.
At 10:30am, the benchmark index was hovering at 147,091.44, a gain of 599.81 points or 0.41%.
Buying was observed in key sectors including cement, commercial banks, fertiliser, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and power generation. Index-heavy stocks, including HUBCO, SNGPL, SSGC, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, MEBL and UBL traded in the green.
Investor sentiments remained positive, buoyed by Moody's upgrade of Pakistan's sovereign rating and a wave of strong corporate earnings that kept sentiment upbeat.
Moody's raised Pakistan's credit rating one notch to Caa1 from Caa2, shifting the outlook to stable. The decision, based on improving external buffers, fiscal consolidation, and progress under the IMF program, has provided a powerful boost to market morale.
During the previous week, the PSX climbed to an all-time intraday high of 147,534 points before closing at 146,492 points, up 1,109 points or 0.8% on a week-on-week basis.
Internationally, share markets edged higher in Asia on Monday ahead of what is likely to be an eventful week for US interest rate policy, while oil prices slipped as risks to Russian supplies seemed to fade a little.
A general risk-on mood saw indices in Japan and Taiwan make record peaks, while Chinese blue chips reached their highest in 10 months.
US President Donald Trump now seemed more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal with Ukraine instead of a ceasefire first, after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.
Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders later on Monday to discuss the next steps, though actual proposals are vague as yet.
The major economic event of the week will be the Kansas City Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework.
Markets imply around an 85% chance of a quarter-point rate cut at the Fed's meeting on September 17, and are priced for a further easing by December.
The prospect of lower borrowing costs globally has underpinned stock markets, and Japan's Nikkei firmed 0.9% to a fresh record high.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was a fraction lower, having hit a four-year top last week. Chinese blue chips added 1.0%, bringing gains so far this quarter to almost 8%.
EUROSTOXX 50 futures and FTSE futures rose 0.2%, while DAX futures firmed 0.1%.

At close, the rupee settled at 281.95, a gain of Re0.01. This is rupee's ninth consecutive gain agaisnt the greenback. On Tuesday, the local unit closed the session at 281.96. Internationally, the US dollar gained for a third straight session on Wednesday as traders awaited the Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole symposium this week for clues on the path of monetary policy. The New Zealand dollar tumbled after the Reserve Bank said its board also considered a half-point cut in deciding to reduce the cash rate by a quarter point. The kiwi slumped as much as 0.9% to $0.5841, its lowest since April 14. The US dollar index, which measures the currency against six major counterparts, added 0.1% to 98.438, its highest since August 12. In the first two days of this week, it gained about 0.4%. Friday's speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell is the market's main focus, as traders watch for any pushback against the market pricing of a rate reduction next month. Traders now place odds of 84% on such a cut, and expect about 54 basis points of reduction by year-end. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, were little changed on Wednesday, as investors await the next steps in talks to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leaving in place sanctions on Russian crude and the chance of further restrictions on its buyers. Brent crude futures were at $65.90 a barrel, up 11 cents, at 0405 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery, set to expire on Wednesday, were at $62.40 a barrel, up 5 cents. The more-active October contract was at $61.90 a barrel, up 13 cents. Prices settled down more than 1% on Tuesday on optimism that a deal to end the war seemed closer, which would mean the easing of sanctions on Russia and an increase in global supply.

Indian rupee edges lower as dollar sales by foreign banks offset most of greenback demand

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee slipped on Wednesday, as corporate hedging and short-term speculators bolstered demand for the greenback, most of which was met by dollar sales by foreign banks. The rupee settled at 87.0650 to the U.S. dollar against its close of 86.9500 on Tuesday when it climbed the most in over a month, boosted by speculation over Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Traders said foreign banks were active sellers of dollars on Wednesday, limiting rupee depreciation despite significant hedging by importers. A rally in local equities and position squaring also helped the Indian currency recover after recent pressure, traders said. Recent weeks have seen the rupee's direction influenced by news around U.S. tariffs on India, S&P's upgrade of the nation's sovereign credit rating and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned tax cuts on goods and services. Foreign portfolio investors turned buyers of Indian assets in the past three sessions after net selling Indian markets in the last few weeks over tariff uncertainties. 'FPIs have turned steady buyers in Indian markets, encouraged by hopes that the U.S. may reconsider its plan to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports,' said Amit Pabari, managing director at CR Forex. Indian rupee to shrug off dollar strength, recent weakening bias on pause The return of foreign inflows comes even as U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday accused India of profiteering from its purchases of Russian oil during the war in Ukraine. Other Asian currencies traded mixed on the day, while the dollar index was slightly higher at 98.21 as on 1549 IST. Rupee traders will also tune in to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday, which may provide clues on the U.S.'s interest rate trajectory. 'A signal that cuts may be delayed could strengthen the dollar, while any indication of looser policy may weigh on it and encourage risk-on sentiment,' Pabari added.
