World Environment Day celebrated in Dindigul, Theni
A slew of activities were held in Dindigul and Theni districts on account of World Environment Day on Thursday.
In Dindigul district, Food and Civil Supplies Minister R. Sakkarapani planted saplings at Kulanthai Velappar Temple in Oddanchatram. Dindigul Collector S. Saravanan was present during the occasion. The saplings were planted along the Girivalam path of the temple. The Minister also participated in an awareness programme against the use of plastic items. Various activities were also held at the Collectorate in Dindigul.
In Theni district, Forest Department officials conducted various competitions at Andipatti Government Boys Higher Secondary School. Essay, painting and quiz competitions were conducted on environmental protection and certificates and prizes were given to the winning students. During the event, the students also held placards with the slogan Beat Plastic Pollution.

Authorities refute tribals claim over forest land in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve
The Forest Department has refuted the claims over ancestral land by tribals from 'Attur Kolli Haadi' in Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on the grounds that no such hamlet is on official records. The issue came to the fore when about 150 tribals from nearby villages and working in local estates, asserted their rights over the land on May 5 and 6, and have refused to vacate the place pending settlement of their claims under the Forest Rights Act (FRA). Speaking to reporters, Ananya Kumar, Assistant Conservator of Forests of Nagarahole Wildlife Division, said on Saturday that around 150 tribals, including FRA applicants and other tribal leaders, 'illegally' entered the Attur Kolli forest area of Nagarahole range and constructed three sheds after clearing the vegetation. Though the Forest Department personnel tried to convince the tribals to vacate the area, they refused to do so stating that they would stay inside the forest until their forest rights are recognised. But Mr. Kumar said their claims are not supported by either historical or legal records and hence was not admissible. The Forest Department officials stated that the applications have undergone extensive scrutiny and multiple rounds of verification by the Sub-Divisional and District Level Committees (SDLC/DLC) since 2020. It has been concluded that there is no record of a tribal hamlet named 'Attur Kolli Haadi' within the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, said Mr. Kumar. The proceedings of the subdivisional level forest rights committee meeting held on May 22, 2025, conducted by Assistant Commissioner of Madikeri, records the statements of the Forest Department that there is no record of Attur Kolli Haadi. The department provided supporting evidence that Attur Kolli forest area is a natural forest and no historical occupation, habitation, or cultivation has ever taken place in the patch of forest as claimed by applicants, Mr. Kumar said. The authorities cited the Nagarahole National Park Management Plan (2000-2010) and pointed out that it mentions the names of 43 hamlets but there was no record of the Attur Kolli Haadi. Satellite imagery from 1985 to 2025, historical management plans, and demographic surveys from the University of Mysore were also cited to claim that no habitation or cultivation has occurred in the area. Prior to that, on May 15, the SDLC meeting was held in Madikeri and officials submitted their petition with records, while the officials from the Integrated Tribal Development Project stated that there was no mention of 'Attur Kolli Haadi' in their departmental records, the authorities added. The SDLC of FRA has also deemed that the evidence presented by the claimants was insufficient to prove historical habitation and cultivation and hence has rejected the forest rights claims pertaining to Attur Kolli forest area, according to Mr. Kumar. Meanwhile, tribal leaders and NGOs supportive of the cause have sharply criticised the State's response and have accused the authorities of violating the spirit and letter of FRA. The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, which booked a suo moto case, directed the Kodagu Deputy Commissioner to conduct an inquiry which is in process and the next hearing will be held on June 10, 2025.

Women's police station gets a new look in just 69 days
Doddaballapur: Once functioning out of a cramped police quarters building originally meant for a single family, the women's police station of Bengaluru Rural district has now un-dergone a remarkable transformation. In just 69 days, the station has been fully renovated and was officially inaugurated on Thursday. Located within the premises of the Doddaballapur rural police station, the women's police station was previously operating out of a small residential unit — a setup that significantly affected police operations. There was limited space for receiving com-plaints, conducting counselling sessions, and interrogating suspects, which ham-pered the station's efficiency. The transformation began after Inspector M.B. Naveen Kumar took charge on March 13. With a vision to improve the work environment and public service, he initiated the renovation work by March 29. He was supported by police personnel Lokesh, Hev, and Sunil Godrale. The project was made possible through CSR funds and contributions from donors, resulting in a completely renovated station within just over two months. Remarkably, a legal aid and counselling centre was also estab-lished within just 7 days. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bengaluru Rural SP C.K. Baba inau-gurated the newly renovated station. Speaking to the media, he praised Inspector Naveen Kumar and his team for their dedication and efficient execution of the ren-ovation. 'They have not only renovated the station but also set up a special legal support centre. I extend my congratulations to them,' he said. SP Baba further shared plans for additional facilities to better serve the public, in-cluding setting up a library and a dedicated playroom for children visiting the station with their families.

HPCL Visakh Refinery exhorts people to do their part to save planet
Visakhapatnam: As part of World Environment Day celebrations at HPCL – Visakh Re-finery, a valedictory function was organised in the refinery. In his address, executive director (I/C) – Visakh Refinery R Ramakrish-nan stressed the importance of environmental protection and respon-sibility of individuals. While explaining this year's theme focusing on 'beat plastic pollution', he cited how each individual can contribute to reducing plastic pollution by using biodegradable materials in place of single-use plastic. Later, the World Environment Day pledge was administered to the employees by Abhishek Trivedi ED-VRMP, Ramesh Krishnan ED-Operations and Commissioning and B Ravi HoD- Technical. Prizes were given away to winners of various competitions like slogan, online quiz, poetry, photography, painting and memes. Street plays were organised in residential areas at Sriharipuram and Malkapuram. The refinery created awareness on the ill-effects of plastic pollution and biodegradable alternatives to plastic pollution among contract workers. Cloth bags and saplings of different varieties were distribut-ed to people. G Bhagavan, GM-Technical, briefed about several activities carried out by the refinery. Refinery employees, their family members, chil-dren and winners of various competitions attended.
