Dindigul lock, Ayakudi Guava, and Kodaikanal Hill Garlic, all made up of flowers, were the highlight of the inaugural day of the 10-day annual summer festival and 62nd flower show at Bryant Park in Kodaikanal on Saturday. The flower show was inaugurated by Dindigul Member of Parliament. R. Sachithanantham and Dindigul Collector S. Saravanan in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary of Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department K. Manivasan, Agricultural Production Commissioner and Secretary to the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department V. Dakshinamoorthy and Director (In-charge) of Horticulture and Plantation Crops B. Murugesh. The opening day of the event witnessed a decent crowd. The authorities said that they expected an increase in the number of visitors in the coming days. The government was organising the summer festival and flower show to showcase the art and culture of Tamil Nadu and the festival would be held till June 1. The people were captivated by over 70,000 flowers that were arranged in various shapes and sizes. Flowers from across the globe were displayed at the event. Flowers were arranged in the shape of peacocks and elephants were carved out of vegetables. There were also messages to create awareness among the tourists to avoid the use of plastic and protect the environment and wildlife Some of flowers on display included Salvia, Delphinium, Ornithogalum, Gazania, Penstemon, Verbena, Coreopsis, Dahlia, Lilium, Antirrhinum, pansy, Marigold, Dianthus, Zinnia, California Poppy, etc. Basic facilities including drinking water and toilet facilities, parking, transportation facilities and other arrangements were made to prevent traffic congestion. People were seen enthusiastically clicking photographs and selfies with the flowers on display. Cultural programmes, art performances and various competitions have been organised as part of the event. The authorities said that they expected around 1.5 lakh tourists to visit the 10-day event.

Sirumalai to get a facelift as Dindigul district gets ₹10 crore from T.N. govt.

Collector S. Saravanan said on Thursday that Sirumalai would get a facelift as Dindigul district has received ₹10 crore from the Tamil Nadu government. Speaking to media persons, he said that Sirumalai has been attracting tourists and thus to give more focus, the Horticulture and Tourism and other departments would be working on improving the infrastructural facilities. After visiting the Pepper Falls in Pallangi village near Vilpatti, he said that though the waterfalls here was small, they expect more visitors due to the summer rush. The Collector discussed the need to improve facilities and also deploy forest department personnel. The officials said that for any adventure tourism, the visitors should get prior permission from the Tourism Department. Similarly, the Forest Department clearance was also mandatory for those entering the reserve forest areas in the hill station. The Collector presided over a review meeting on the preparedness for the 62nd annual flower show to be held in Bryant Park here shortly. The Horticulture Department officials said that they had procured saplings from Kolkata, Niligiris and other locations for special variety of flowers including Marigold and among others. Closer to the commencement of flower show, the flower arrangement would be completed in the park. Similarly, they also explained about the plans to put up selfie-points at the Flower Show as it would attract tourists. This year, images of animals like giraffe and vegetables and fruits and among others would be decorated with flowers, they explained.

In response to the demands of the residents, foundation was laid for road works from Vattakanal to Vellagavi and upgradation of the road from Kombaikadu via Sembirankulam in Kodaikanal. Dindigul Collector S. Saravanan and Palani MLA I.P. Senthilkumar laid the foundation for the road works. The estimated cost for the road works project from Vattakanal to Vellagavi was ₹21.74 crore and the road upgradation project was ₹10 crore. Vellagavi, established during British rule, was about eight km from the main road. The people had urged the authorities to establish basic amenities in the village including a proper road facility connecting the main road and the village. The Collector said that the people had submitted petitions demanding basic amenities in the village. The ration items were being brought to Vellagavi and other villages like Chinnur and Periyur in the panchayat. Works on establishing school and health facilities were also being carried out, he said. MLA Senthilkumar said that NABARD was providing the financial assistance for the two projects and steps were being taken to complete the road works as expeditiously as possible. Work on setting up a three-phase electricity facility in Vadagounchi was completed, he said. The Collector and the MLA also inaugurated the CCTV cameras that were installed around the Kodaikanal lake. A total of 68 CCTV cameras were installed around the lake area at an estimated cost of ₹60 lakh. Kodaikanal Municipality Chairman P. Chelladurai, Vice-Chairman K. P. N. Mayakannan, Municipal Commissioner P. Sathiyanathan and others were present.

Do not fall prey to fraudsters using my name and photo, says Dindigul Collector

Collector S. Saravanan on Tuesday issued a statement to alert the public about attempts being made by some fraudsters to cheat people using his name and photograph. In a press release, he said that some persons had tried to commit fraud using a fake WhatsApp account which was being operated using the Collector's name and a request for money was made. The Collector has requested the public not to believe and respond to the messages. He has urged the public to be cautious. It was said that as soon as such messages were brought to light, a complaint was lodged with the Cyber Crime Police. So far three people have reported about these messages. Following a probe, the police traced the contact number to Laos in South East Asia. Investigation was underway. The press release added that there was a rise in such cyber crimes and requested the public to be cautious. The police were also creating awareness of such crimes.

1,773 write NEET in Ramanathapuram

As many as 1,773 candidates appeared for National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test in five centres in the district on Sunday. The exam, which is conducted as an eligibility test to secure admission to undergraduate medical and dental programmes, was attended by 1,773 candidates. As per records, 236 candidates were allotted Ramanathapuram Anna University, 360 were allotted Sethupathi Government Arts College, 360 were allotted Ramanathapuram Government Arts College for Women, 600 were allotted Paramakudi Government Arts College and 288 in Kendriya Vidyalaya in Mandapam. While 1,844 candidates were registered for the examination, 71 candidates were absent. DINDIGUL In Dindigul district, 2,902 candidates took the NEET in seven exam centres. Of the 3023 candidates – 987 boys and 2,036 girls, 2902- 943 boys and 1,957 girls were present for the examination. 121 candidates were absent. Collector S. Saravanan inspected the centres. Virudhunagar In Virudhunagar district, 134 students of the 3,012 candidates, who were given hall-tickets for the UG NEET absented themselves. A total of 914 boys and 1,964 girls appeared the for examination held at six centres.
