PETALING JAYA : Several unity government leaders have conveyed their well wishes to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the occasion of his 100th birthday today.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, prayed that Mahathir would continue to enjoy wellness, peace and health.
'Your healthy lifestyle and unceasing service sets an example for our nation which is ageing yet still holds great hope.
'May God continue to bless Tun,' the PKR president and Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said in a Facebook post.
Agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu also wished the former PH chairman on his 100th birthday, describing him as a key figure in Malaysia's development and political history.
Mohamad, the president of Amanah, also hailed Mahathir for consistently speaking out on the plight of the Palestinians and condemning the actions of the Zionist regime.
'A hundred years is an extraordinary period of time. It signifies a steadfastness in principles and an extraordinary dedication to the nation,' he said in a Facebook post.
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh of DAP meanwhile said: 'Happy 100th birthday Tun Dr Mahathir!'
Mahathir led the Barisan Nasional (BN) government from 1981 to 2003 and held the top post again from May 2018 to February 2020 under the PH administration, after helping to topple BN from power.
He is known as Malaysia's 'Father of Modernisation' for the initiatives he carried out as fourth prime minister, including iconic infrastructure projects like the Petronas Twin Towers, KL Tower, KLIA, and Putrajaya as the nation's administrative hub.
He has been openly critical of Anwar, his former deputy prime minister, as well as PH and Umno, a key component in the unity government.

Saifuddin Nasution: Charges in Zara Qairina's case are the first under Malaysia's new anti-bullying law

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — The case involving Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir is the first to be prosecuted under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025, which stipulates bullying as a criminal offence, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the amendment involving Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code strengthened the legal provisions against acts of bullying. Saifuddin Nasution said since the amendment to Section 507 of the Penal Code was enforced and gazetted on July 11, police had opened 11 investigation papers related to bullying. 'These investigation papers fall under Sections 507B, 507C and so on. This shows that the strengthening of the law has enabled the police to take action. 'Now, in the case of Zara, for example, in which the accused were charged today, it is under one of the amended sections, making this the first case we have prosecuted (since the amendment),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for the Home Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (MUDA-Muar), who raised the issue of the police's allegedly slow response in investigating bullying cases, including a recent case in Johor. The Penal Code (Amendment) 2025 Act and the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) 2025 Act, aimed at addressing bullying more effectively and comprehensively, including cyberbullying, were passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 10, 2024, and in the Dewan Negara on Dec 16 the same year. Earlier today, five teenage girls were charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, with using insulting words against Zara Qairina. The charges were framed under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the Code, which carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. In line with this legal development, Saifuddin Nasution said the ministry wanted the police to act swiftly in investigating every reported case of bullying. At the same time, he reminded all parties not to play up sentiments or create inaccurate impressions as though there was an attempt to protect any individual or cover up matters. 'When I reviewed the chronology and sequence of the police investigation, with the large number of witness statements taken in detail, I also felt sad that, with all the police's diligence, simply because of one part where the police were said to have failed, (which was) to conduct a post-mortem. 'Aug 4 was the first time the police submitted the investigation papers to the AG (Attorney General), and on Aug 3, Zara's mother had lodged a police report after noticing bruises while bathing Zara's body. So at the same time, in the investigation papers submitted to the AG, we recommended that Zara's grave be exhumed,' he said. Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital on July 17, a day after being found unconscious in a drain near the hostel of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tun Datu Mustapha di Papar. Meanwhile, apart from the Home Ministry, several other ministries also wound up debates on the 13MP motion for their respective ministries, including the National Unity Ministry. — Bernama

Water crisis by 2030 from data centre boom? Johor MB slams critics, tells them to stop scaring off investors

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 21 — Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reportedly slammed critics of Johor's development as fearmongers, by claiming that the state is unable to provide sufficient water and electricity supply for companies. He said such claims were slanderous and malicious, aimed at undermining the state government's efforts to attract international investment, particularly in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'We have also set up a special committee involving three state executive councillors with portfolios in Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources; Infrastructure and Transport; as well as Housing and Local Government. 'So, when a company wants to set up a data centre in Johor, we will assess it first, and if there is insufficient electricity and water supply, we will not approve their application,' Berita Harian quoted him saying. He said the initiatives undertaken by the state government were comprehensive, carried out in collaboration with Putrajaya to provide the best possible facilities for investors. Expanding further, Onn Hafiz said the state government has also introduced various initiatives, including tapping into alternative water supply in collaboration with Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd to ensure sufficient resources. He said the state government also has a long-term plan with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation to ensure water supply remains sufficient until 2030. 'Johor is very serious about bringing in investment, and we will ensure that investors who choose Johor will feel secure with adequate water and electricity supply. 'As for those seeking to fish in troubled waters, I hope they will stop, because what we want to build is not only Johor's economy but also one that benefits the nation,' he said. Earlier this week, State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said Johor is the only state with a technical committee dedicated to evaluating and approving data centre projects, particularly their impact on water resources. He said the move ensures data centre planning is carried out comprehensively, including water efficiency and environmental sustainability. The committee, which he chairs, also advises developers to adopt modern cooling systems and new water-saving technologies. The rapid growth of data centre projects in Johor has raised concerns that the state could face a treated water crisis by 2030, with BIMB Research predicting demand will rise 18-fold from 20 million litres per day (mld) to 368 mld.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Malaysia views Asean as a region with vast untapped potential and is poised to become a dynamic engine of growth and resilience amid global uncertainties, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti). Miti Deputy Secretary General (Trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa said Asean is more than just a large market, it is a reservoir of innovation, creativity and energy with a population nearing 700 million, almost one third of whom are youth. 'Our demographic dividend, coupled with a rapidly growing consumer class, rising connectivity and accelerating digital adoption, gives Asean a unique advantage. 'If nurtured in accordance with the principles of sustainability and inclusivity, these strengths will not only fortify our region's growth but also position Asean to play a defining role in shaping the future of the global economy,' she said in her speech at the welcome dinner for the Senior Economic Officials' Meeting (SEOM) 3/56 and Related Meetings today. Under the Asean chairmanship, Mastura said Malaysia is working to deepen regional integration, strengthen supply chain resilience, foster sustainable and responsible investment and advance digital innovation. 'More importantly, we are committed to creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes, especially micro, small and medium enterprises to participate meaningfully in Asean's growth story,' she added. In a separate statement, Miti said key discussions at SEOM 3/56 focused on Malaysia's Priority Economic Deliverables under its 2025 Asean chairmanship; updates on the 2025 Annual Priorities under the AEM/SEOM purview; implementation of Asean agreements; advancement of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement; and Asean's sustainability agenda, including carbon neutrality, circular economy, and the Asean Power Grid. Miti is hosting the SEOM 3/56 and Related Meetings from Aug 18 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur.
