Anthony Joshua called out for rematch by first fighter to KO Brit
Joshua - who has not fought since losing to Daniel Dubois last September - is hoping to return to the ring later this year following successful elbow surgery
Mihai Nistor - who famously became the first fighter to knock out Anthony Joshua - has called for a rematch with the Brit.
The 34-year-old Romanian - who fought 64 times in major amateur bouts - went head-to-head with Joshua in the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Turkey back in 2011. Nistor amassed quite an impressive record as an amateur before turning professional back in 2019.
Since then, the heavyweight star has won all eight of his professional bouts, winning all by knockout. However, it has been over a year since he was last seen in the ring. Despite the inactivity, Nistor believes he is not far off of top world level and is prepared to sign a deal to face Joshua if boxing promoter Eddie Hearn sends an offer his way.
In an interview with World Boxing News, he said: 'I'd love to box again with my former rivals. If I could box against Joshua and Usyk again, that would be my goal. But right now, I'm not just with them. I have been continuing to win fights. I'm a bit disappointed with my career.
"I was held back for about two years because of the pandemic. I am confident and convinced that I will make it to the level of Joshua and Usyk.' Joshua has not fought since suffering a brutal knockout defeat to British rival Daniel Dubois last September. The loss put an end to Joshua's recent good run of form in the ring after losing back-to-back fights to Oleksandr Usyk.
On Joshua's defeats to Usyk, Nistor added, 'I believe Usyk defeated Joshua through superior technique and tactics. He wanted the victories more. I think Joshua's behaviour can be explained by the fact that losing for the second time made the defeat even more painful. I believe that after the defeats to Usyk, Joshua didn't recover mentally enough. I think that led to the loss against Dubois. He wasn't focused.'
Regarding his own future, Nistor concluded: "I expect to get back in the ring soon. In June or July, I'll be back and ready for anyone.' Joshua is aiming to return to competitive boxing before the end of the year, following elbow surgery. On the topic of a return to the ring, 'AJ' said last month: "When do you want me back, people? I'm trying to get my body right. I have got to actually have a little surgery on my elbow. A small surgery sometime in May. I'm finalising the details... that will see me out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks, and then when I'm healed, I will be back."
Joshua has not given up hope of finally realising a bout with Fury. The Brit is not convinced that his rival's retirement is final and appears confident that a fight could still materialise. In a recent post uploaded to Snapchat, Joshua shared an image of himself watching Fury fight, saying: "One of these days I'll be standing in the opposite corner. Ready and fully charged spiritually."

She has never made it into the main draw for a grand slam singles tournament but won the US Open in women's doubles last year and has featured in an Australian Open final and a French Open and Wimbledon semi-final. In mixed doubles she won Wimbledon in 2023. Routliffe too has a fine record, winning the US Open in 2023, making the Wimbledon final last year and winning the Tour Finals in 2024, too. Fair to say that this will likely be a tougher task than the first-round match. But Raducanu and Boulter have the game, if they click.

Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i provides update on recovery as Wallabies prepare for Lions series
Wallabies back Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i said he would be fit to face the British and Irish Lions in July and August after a month-long layoff with a broken jaw. The high profile signing from rugby league has had a disrupted first season in Super Rugby Pacific with injuries severely limiting his time on the pitch. "My face was really big for a bit, I was wearing a face mask everywhere," he told reporters after meeting some real lions at Sydney's Taronga Zoo on Wednesday. "I'll be fully fit. Obviously, had a toe injury, then my jaw and concussion as well. But you know, it's all part of the game. "It's such an important time for myself and Australian rugby and I want to be playing, so obviously I was a little bit of a nerves but ... I had surgery maybe three weeks ago now and looking good going into the Lions." Sua'ali'i said he had lost nearly five kilograms due to the difficulties of eating with a broken jaw but had put it all back on again since. "I've been eating heaps," he said. "Thanks to my mum and my family around me to help me stay on track." The knee of his Wallabies teammate Andrew Kellaway's was the inadvertent cause of the broken jaw and the winger feared at one stage that he might be remembered as the man who ended Sua'ali'i's chances of facing the Lions. "Nobody wants to crash the Ferrari, that's not what anyone wants," Kellaway joked. "He looks alright, he's doing a lot of talking, which is a good sign." Liverpool hero's agent admits ex-Reds star would love Anfield return this summer
While attention remains firmly placed on whether move can be sealed for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot remains in the market for a new assistant after John Heitinga's departure Dirk Kuyt would love to rejoin Liverpool as Arne Slot's assistant manager but his agent has ruled out the prospect of the Anfield cult hero replacing John Heitinga as the head coach's key lieutenant. Slot is in the market for a new assistant coach after Heitinga last week became the new boss at Ajax and that prompted speculation that former forward Kuyt could step in - having previously had a chance to work as an assistant under the Reds chief while at AZ Alkmaar. However Kuyt's representative Rob Jansen has said the move will not happen. 'No, it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him,' Jansen told podcast KieftJansenEgmondGijp. 'The assistant of Liverpool will be someone else. It would have been great for Dirk. He would have loved to go to Liverpool. Assistant there is of course a serious level.' In a conversation on Peter Crouch's podcast earlier this season Kuyt confirmed he turned down Slot's offer at Alkmaar. 'I know him very well. I had the opportunity when I retired from football to become his assistant at AZ,' Kuyt said. 'I didn't choose to become his assistant which I regret of course now. "But when he was at Feyenoord he gave me the opportunity to work a week alongside him to see how he's training and preparing for a game, so that was really interesting and of course I follow him very closely.' Kuyt, currently in charge of Belgian top flight side Beerschot, spent six seasons at Liverpool, scoring 71 times in 285 appearances. But his only piece of silverware was a League Cup. Among the other names linked with replacing Heitinga are Marino Pusic, who was Slot's assistant at AZ and Feyenoord and last month said farewell to Shakhtar Donetsk. Etienne Reijnen, the current Feyenoord assistant, was in contention for a role last summer but there were reported issues with his work permit. Liverpool have already had an active start to the off-season with Jeremie Frimpong arriving from Bayer Leverkusen as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement, while Milos Kerkez is close to being signed from Bournemouth and talks continue with Leverkusen around star man Florian Wirtz over a British record deal that could end up being worth £125m.
