Coming off road series losses, Padres, Cardinals open 4-game set

Reuters24-07-2025
July 24 - The San Diego Padres will be looking to generate more offense and play better defense as they continue their push toward the postseason.
They lost two of three games in Miami this week before coming to St. Louis for a four-game series against the Cardinals that starts Thursday night.
San Diego scored just seven runs in the series against the Marlins while remaining in the National League's third wild-card slot.
"We're playing a lot of games where we don't have a lot of margin for error," Padres manager Mike Shildt said after his team took a 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday. "We play a lot of clean games, and (Wednesday), we gave away a little too much that cost us."
The Padres sit 25th in the majors in runs scored. As such, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has expressed an interest in acquiring more offense before the trade deadline.
"We've got to put ourselves in good position regardless of what happens at the deadline," San Diego third baseman Manny Machado said. "We want to make a postseason run. We want to get deep into the postseason. That fact doesn't change whether we do anything or we don't. We've just got to go out there and play better baseball than we did these last few days."
Machado committed a throwing error in each of the two losses at Miami.
"It came down to some stupid errors I made that allowed some dumb runs," he said. "Would've been a different story if I played a little better defense. When you're playing games like this, I think it comes down to defense.
"That's why we lost. Those stupid errors."
The Padres will open the St. Louis series with Yu Darvish on the mound. The right-hander has struggled to an 0-2 record and 6.08 ERA in his three starts since returning to the rotation following an elbow injury that sidelined him for the first half of the season.
Darvish has made nine lifetime starts vs. St. Louis, going 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA.
San Diego will catch the Cardinals reeling from a 1-5 start after the All-Star break. St. Louis got swept at Arizona, then lost two of three games at Colorado.
During the five defeats, the Cardinals were outscored 36-11. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was most disappointed with his hitters after his team lost to the Rockies 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon -- Colorado's first shutout win since May 15, 2024.
"Our approaches weren't very good," Marmol said. "In my opinion, that's the worst game we've played."
The Cardinals' offense has sagged when the team has fallen behind early in games over the past week.
"That's part of it," Marmol said. "We've done it a decent amount after the break. It does take it out of you. You have to be able to separate it. That's part of being mentally tough. You've got to separate what's going on on that side of the ball and still take productive at-bats and keep your approach."
The Cardinals will open the series with Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA), who is coming off an ugly 10-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings in that contest.
Gray is 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA in three career starts against the Padres.

Aaron Rodgers sends savage message to Pittsburgh Steelers teammate as tension rises in camp

Veteran star Aaron Rodgers has offered some brutal advice to a Steelers teammate ahead of the new NFL season. At their recent training camp, the 41-year-old was asked about second-year receiver Roman Wilson, who struggled to make an impact during his rookie season. Wilson's debut campaign was derailed by a hamstring injury in October but Rodgers suggested that there's something else holding the young star back. According to 93.7 The Fan, he said: 'I gotta get Ro out of his head a little bit. I think he's such a good kid. 'He cares so much, whether it's my approval or if he's doing it right. He's just gotta trust himself, because he's so damn talented. 'The more you can play free and not think out there, the better he's gonna play. The more he can just trust what he's got, and then just go out there and react, the better he can play.' Rodgers comments can only be viewed as constructive criticism to his teammate and it appears that the two have already established a connection on the field. In Tuesday's session, the two connect for an impressive touchdown, as Wilson dived to make a stunning catch. Speaking to The Athletic afterwards, Wilson said: 'Just trying to be open at all times. I want him to want to use me. I want to be that guy.' Steelers coach Mike Tomlin will be hoping that Rodgers is able to rediscover his best form with the franchise, after they suffered an injury in the quarterback department. On Tuesday it emerged that Will Howard, who was selected in the sixth round of April's NFL Draft, has suffered a fracture in his hand after banging it during practice, While the young quarterback is awaiting further tests, it is not expected that he will be required to undergo surgery. However, he is still expected to be ruled out for at least three weeks with the 2025 season on the horizon. After spending 2024 at Ohio State following four years at Kansas State, Howard is entering his rookie year with the Steelers under the mentorship of Aaron Rodgers. The four-time MVP, who signed a one-year, $13.65million deal with Pittsburgh this offseason, is expected to suit up as Mike Tomlin's starter under center.

Secret Travis Kelce message that sends Swifties into meltdown at Chiefs camp

Taylor Swift fans may have found yet another invisible string linking the pop star and boyfriend Travis Kelce as he continued training camp this week. The Kansas City Chiefs star finally addressed reporters on Wednesday for the first time since the team kicked off training camp ahead of their bid to return to the Super Bowl yet again. However, Swifties were quick to zone in on the fact that Kelce's press conference came on the 13th day of camp as he prepares to enter his 13th season in the league. They connected the dots, highlighting that his pop sensation girlfriend's favorite number is 13. 'Someone in Kansas City needs a raise!,' on social media user posted. 'You are telling me that Travis Kelce hasn't spoken to the media all Training Camp, but his first time just HAPPENS to fall on Day 13. The Swifties have fully infiltrated the Chiefs media team.' 'the chiefs media knows what they are doing,' another added alongside a GIF of the songstress giving a thumbs-up. 'I've been loving all the swiftie bait recently lmao,' a third chimed in. Kelce himself didn't address his famous girlfriend, instead choosing to put all his focus on football. 'I've been lucky to be here for my 13th year now,' Kelce said. 'I just absolutely love this organization. I love the team, I love the coaches. 'I know just about every defensive coach, as well as all the offensive coaches and vice versa with the players and the staff in the equipment room. I have fun coming into work every single day.' The Chiefs have a long standing relationship with Missouri Western University, where they hold training camp at the Division-II powerhouse in St. Joseph. Players stay in dorms and have the tradition of spending time closer together instead of the teams that have camp and release players home every evening, and Kelce described it as a sanctuary. 'I love it here,' Kelce said of training camp. 'It gets me away from everything else that's going on in this crazy world. You can really just focus in on your craft and focus in on being the best you can for the guys around you, man.' 'Football has always been the biggest driving force I've ever had. I love coming out here and focusing on this and getting better for another run at hopefully a Super Bowl.' The tight end did, however, appear to make a subtle nod to the 'Anti-Hero' hitmaker when he praised quarterback and close friend Patrick Mahomes. 'Being away this offseason and coming back into training camp [shows] how fast his mind is moving,' Kelce said. 'It seems like he's always a step ahead, and his arm is alive right now. It's fun to see him know the play, know where he's going before the snap happens. On top of that, just being a leader and being our biggest, fearless competitor.' 'Fearless', of course, being a hit single from Swift's 2008 studio album of the same name that helped catapult her to stardom.
