Great Yarmouth zoo announces death of 13-year-old Sumatran tiger

BBC News25-03-2025
A tiger who has been put down at a zoo due to an "untreatable spinal condition" has been described as "truly remarkable".Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, announced the death of Kubu, a 13-year-old Sumatran Tiger, on Monday. It said the animal had been under veterinary supervision for age-related mobility issues. However, it was later discovered he had a prolapsed disc and nerve root tumour. "Despite the dedicated efforts of our keepers and veterinary team to manage his care and ensure his comfort, the decision was made to let him pass peacefully and with dignity," the zoo said.
The Norfolk attraction is home to a variety of animals and big cats including snow leopards, Amur leopards and clouded leopards. The tiger was born at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Ashford, Kent, before arriving at Thrigby in September 2013 when he was two years old. It said he brought a "striking presence and a calm, regal personality"."From the moment he joined our family, Kubu captured the hearts of everyone who met him. "His gentle yet commanding demeanour made him a favourite among visitors, while his keepers formed a special bond with him, caring for him with deep respect and admiration." Kubu was an "ambassador" for his species and was a "truly remarkable tiger," it added.
In August 2023, the park announced the death of Sumatran tiger Dua who had resided there since 2005. The female tiger was 19 when she died and had been showing signs of a "geriatric cat". Kubu was the last remaining tiger and the attractions hopes to have a young male tiger join the gardens by the summer with a female joining later in the year. It said it had also worked to extend the tiger enclosure in order to provide more space and modernisation, and to promote successful breeding. "Though his powerful roars will no longer echo through the gardens, Kubu's memory will live on through the impact he made on our visitors and the commitment of Thrigby Hall to wildlife conservation," the zoo said.

Mark Labbett's Celebs Go Dating journey will end in 'surprising' way after viral clip

Celebs Go Dating's Anna Williamson has hinted how The Chase star's journey could end after he went viral for 'falling asleep' during his first romantic meet up on the show. The Chase star Mark Labbett has certainly made his entrance on Celebs Go Dating. In the most recent episode, which aired on Wednesday, August 20, he stepped out his comfort zone for his first date. ‌ Despite being unexperienced in the dating world, relationship guru Anna Williamson told us that she believes Mark was a "fantastic signing" from the E4 production team. She also hinted at how his dating journey will end, following its turbulent start. ‌ "Mark is fantastic, he's been a brilliant signing," dating coach Anna told the Record. "Well done to the casting for welcoming Mark and of course, well done to Mark for wanting to come on." ‌ Anna also touched on Mark's TikTok viral moments following his appearance on Wednesday. "We knew that was going to happen," Anna admitted, suppressing a laugh before recalling how the quiz whizz - known as The Beast - yawned his way through his date with Natalie, before mistakingly attempting to drink a candle instead of his drink. ‌ Anna noted: "I think that shows how much work we need to do with him. But we are always there to champion people including Mark quite rightly, and how he finishes the series, I think, will be very very surprising to people, in a good way." Ahead of his debut on the show, Mark said: 'I've been single for most of my life. I'm a little bit on the spectrum." Mark says he finds human signals much harder than trivia. "Facts are easy, people are complicated," he added. In the scenes aired on Wednesday,Mark could be seen struggling to stay awake and at one point even closed his eyes for several seconds. He had them shut for so long that show narrator Rob Beckett humorously remarked he was "dropping off". ‌ Rob then added: "Catching 40 winks whilst eating is a skill." In his previous love life off screen, Mark was married to Katie, who was 27 years younger than him, from 2014 to 2020. The pair first crossed paths on Facebook in 2010. However, it wasn't until 2012 when sparks started to fly after Mark invited her to a celebrity special of the show. ‌ After their split, Mark went on to date Hayley Palmer, although the pair went their separate ways just a year later shortly after marking their anniversary in May last year, 2024. The Sky TV presenter informed her followers at the time: "It is with regret I announce that myself and Mark have gone our separate ways. We had the best year together, and I truly wish him all the very best for the future." "Off I go to listen to Taylor Swift ", she added to the post alongside a broken-heart emoji.

However, the nostalgic move has also left fans pointing out the same issue. Whether your nan slipped you some on the sly or you saved up your pocket money to buy a packet of your own, every Brit is familiar with the tasty treat. And now you can enjoy the sweets as they once were, with new retro editions available on shelves across the UK. The bags were spotted by eager foodies and shared on the Facebook page Newfoodsuk. Throwback snack "New retro bag of Jelly Babies spotted at Tesco!" one social media user captioned a picture of the sweets. The 165 gram bag features the classic design with the cartoon mascots playing on skateboards. A banner across the bottom of the packaging identified it as a "Limited Edition Retro Bag". The sweets were first mass produced at the end of World War One to celebrate the peace era. In fact, they were first marketed as 'Peace Babies' before they were rebranded Jelly Babies after sugar rationing ended in 1953. It wasn't until decades later that the larger bags were established, however the 190 gram bag was controversially cut down to just 165 grams in recent years. Iconic 80s retro sweet RETURNS to UK supermarket shelves after a decade Not nostalgic enough The retro bag is priced for £1.25 and is part of a 1990s nostalgia collection at Tesco. However, sweet-toothed fans pointed out the sweets cost considerably less during this "retro" era. They took to the Facebook comments section to share their thoughts on the reduced weight and inflated prices. "Let's put the prices down to the past too! And make the bag bigger," suggested one fan. "Pity the price isn't retro," agreed another unimpressed commenter. Histoty of Jelly Babies A version of the sweet was first created in a sweet shop in Lancashire in 1864. To mark the end of World War One, the sweets were launched as "Peace Babies". Production paused during the Second World War due to wartime shortages of sugar and other ingredients. In 1953, a new version of the sweet was launched as "Jelly Babies" with a softer jelly texture and individual baby shapes. In 1989, each sweet was given a name and personality to appeal to children: Brilliant (red), Bubbles (yellow), Baby Bonny (pink), Boofuls (green), Bigheart (purple), and Bumper (orange). Long regarded an iconic British confectionary, Jelly Babies are the favourites of famous figures such as the Beatles and Doctor Who, with the fourth doctor Tom Baker frequently offered the sweets on the show. A third person pointed out that the bag of sweets is "not retro bag weight". More on retro snacks Meanwhile, an iconic 80s retro sweet has been spotted on shelves for just 31p. And another popular sweets brand has recently brought back a nostalgic flavour. Plus, B&M is selling giant tubs of a nostalgic childhood sweet for just £1.

On social media, the team said: 'We regret to announce the Polar Express train ride will not operate in Edinburgh in 2025. 'We understand this event is an important experience for families and hope to return in the future.' The Polar Express train ride is based on the 2004 Tom Hanks animated movie about a boy who hops on the train to the North Pole. Departing from Waverley Station in the heart of the capital, kids got a magical sleigh bell from Santa. During the hour-long trip they were served up hot chocolate and cookies by the singing and dancing crew. For some families taking a trip on the train was an annual festive tradition. Around 20,000 guests went on the Edinburgh Polar Express last year. In January, after a record-breaking run the team behind it said they couldn't wait to have everyone back this winter. Even parents who criticised some aspects of it said they planned to buy tickets again for this year before it was axed. It's thought this means there is now only one officially licensed Polar Express running in Scotland in 2025. Take the family on a festive Polar Express railway ride this Christmas One mum said: 'I'm utterly gutted.' Another added: 'The very year I wanted to take my kids and make it special for them. Looks like I will need to think of something else.' While a granny revealed: 'I'm so disappointed. I took my two wee granddaughters last year and they loved it. I was intending to go back this year and stay over in Edinburgh.' Another parent asked: 'Why is this not going ahead in the capital of Scotland? We never get anything decent here.'
