Yankees' bats erupt after rain delay in 10-3 rout of Mariners
Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, Aaron Judge added his 34th homer an inning later and the New York Yankees roughed up Logan Gilbert after a rain delay in a 10-3 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
Austin Wells homered for the third straight game, hitting a two-run shot in a sixth in which the Yankees sent eight men to the plate and knocked out Gilbert (2-3).
Jazz Chisholm Jr. added an RBI single in the seventh, and Paul Goldschmidt doubled twice before chipping in a two-run single in the seventh. New York won for the eighth time in its past 24 games.
Cody Bellinger contributed three hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, two shy of his career high set earlier this season.
Julio Rodriguez hit an RBI double and Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 36th homer in the eighth for the Mariners, who lost for just the third time in nine games.
Yankees rookie Will Warren (6-4) bounced back from last Wednesday's rough outing in Toronto by allowing four hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Warren struck out four, walked two and turned in his fourth scoreless start this season.
Gilbert retired the first 11 New York hitters until allowing a single to Bellinger. After the 35-minute delay, he allowed eight of the final 11 hitters to reach base and yielded five runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The game was delayed during an at-bat to J.P. Crawford with two on. Following the delay, Warren needed one pitch to get Crawford, and the Yankees went ahead in the bottom half on Oswald Peraza's RBI single in the fifth.
Goldschmidt led off the inning with a single and scored when Peraza hit a grounder to second baseman Cole Young, who fumbled the ball transferring it out of his glove.
Judge and Bellinger started the sixth with singles and Stanton followed by hitting a 1-0 slider into the right-center field seats. It was his second homer since returning June 16 from pain in both elbows.
Goldschmidt's double chased Gilbert and Wells homered into the right-center field seats when he slugged Casey Legumina's first-pitch sweeper. Judge added his sixth homer in his past nine games by lining Legumina's 3-1 sweeper into the right field seats for a 7-0 lead.

Fresh off a victory at the Standard Portland Classic last week, Iwai clearly wasn't bothered by distractions as she raced to a 7-under-par 64 Thursday at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club, giving her a two-stroke advantage over the rest of the field. The 23-year-old Iwai sank birdies on her first two holes of the tournament, played on the back nine. She followed up with birdies on Nos. 18, 4, 6, 8 and 9 to provide herself a reasonable margin for error going into Friday. 'So last week I won, but already it's in the past, already past,' Iwai said. 'That's why I was change the mind (for) good focus this week.' The rookie shot out of the gate earlier this year, grabbing second-place finishes at Honda LPGA Thailand in February and the JM Eagle LA Championship in April. Five golfers are tied for second at 5 under, including Megan Khang, who is back at the old stomping grounds in Canada, where she won her first LPGA title in 2023. Khang shook off a bogey on the par-3 third to record six birdies, including back-to-back on the 12th and 13th. 'It's always nerve-wracking coming back to a tournament you have won. Obviously, you would like to do it again,' Khang said. 'It's definitely a little cool coming in and still seeing some spots where my face is. Still catches me off guard.' Fifteen-year-old phenom Aphrodite Deng, a Canadian national, is also sitting at 5 under. The amateur closed her round with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 and pointed to her short game as being the reason for her strong start. 'Today my putting was really good,' she said. World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, looking for her second win of the season, recorded four birdies across Nos. 1-6 to put herself in contention. She acknowledged that playing in first tournament as No. 1 was on her mind. 'I'm not going to lie saying I'm not thinking about that,' Thitikul said. 'But like to be honest, I just told myself like, you can think about it. You can be worry. You can be nerves. But like at the end of the day, you got to pass this as well.' She, Khang and Deng are joined by Ireland's Leona Maguire and Mexico's Gaby Lopez in the tie for second. Alone in seventh place is South Korea's Soo Bin Joo (67). Machado has 3 RBIs as the Padres beat the Giants 8-4 to take 3 of 4
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado drove in three runs against Justin Verlander and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Thursday in a sloppy game. The Padres took three of four from the Giants and have won three straight going into a second straight weekend showdown against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles swept the Padres last weekend at Dodger Stadium and comes in with a one-game lead in the NL West. San Francisco's Rafael Devers hit a 435-foot home run off Dylan Cease (6-11) leading off the sixth and Willy Adames followed with a 400-footer, also to right-center. The Giants took a 2-0 lead after the Padres misplayed three straight balls to open the third, the first two by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis called for Luis Matos' flyball as he and center fielder Ramón Laureano converged, but he pulled up and it fell in for a triple. Tatis, who made a spectacular leaping catch to rob Devers of a homer on Wednesday night, then misjudged Andrew Knizner's fly ball that fell in for an RBI double. Jung Hoo Lee reached on second baseman Jake Cronenworth's fielding error and Knizner scored on a double play. San Diego tied it in the fourth on Machado's RBI single and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly. The Padres scored six in the fifth, the first two coming when the Giants committed two errors on Freddy Fermin's bunt single. Braves third baseman Austin Riley's injury-shortened season ends following core surgery
ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the season after having core injury surgery on Thursday. The Braves announced the surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Riley, who was placed on the 10-day injured list for the second time in two months on Aug. 4 with a strained lower abdominal muscle, is expected to return in time for spring training next year. Riley first landed on the IL on July 12 with a strained abdomen. He returned on July 25 and finished the season hitting .260 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. The Braves also claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned right-hander Dane Dunning to Triple-A Gwinnett. Also, the team added outfielder Jake Fraley to its roster after optioning RHP Connor Seabold to Gwinnett. Fraley was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Sunday before being claimed by the Braves.
