Liverpool miss out on windfall as secret £40m transfer clause ignored

Liverpool included a clause in their transfer agreement with Sheffield United from five years ago and unfortunately for Arne Slot it did not pay off in the end as the Reds failed to receive a boost
Liverpool have missed out on a handy cash windfall after former player Rhian Brewster departed Sheffield United. The forward signed for Derby County on a free transfer earlier this week after failing to agree to a new contract with the Blades ahead of another season in the Championship.

Brewster has signed a two-year contract with the Rams and departed Bramall Lane after featuring 42 times for Sheffield United last season, as the side fell in the Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium. The 25-year-old scored just nine goals in 119 appearances for the Yorkshire side and joins a Derby squad that have already signed strikers in Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang from Luton Town and Charlotte FC in recent weeks.

The striker was offered fresh terms by United, who he joined in 2020, but has instead chosen to make a move to the Midlands. And as a result Liverpool have missed out on the opportunity to rake in some cash.

When Brewster joined Sheffield United in a £23.5million deal, the Reds ensured they were protected in the even the forward found success. The Anfield team included two clauses in the transfer agreement that saw the former Chelsea academy ace depart.
As part of a club-record fee for the Blades, they were also rerquired to agree to a sell-on and buy-back clauses. Liverpool inserted the ability to see Brewster to return to Merseyside for £40m should they be persuaded his performances warranted the fee.
And the Reds also ensured a a 15 per cent sell on-clause was in place but with Brewster leaving Sheffield United for free, that has unfortunately not paid off. Nevertheless, the ex-Liverpool forward has found another opportunity to prove himself.
'I'm very happy and very delighted to join this great club," Brewster said after joining Derby. "It's been busy but after speaking to all the boys and the manager and stuff like that, it was a no-brainer.
"I feel this is a big opportunity for me - and one I had to grab with two hands. Hopefully, I can show that this year.

'I know Ben Osborn from being at Sheffield United and also Kane Wilson through playing with England at youth level. For me, the project that John Eustace has set out, for me, was a no-brainer to be involved with. It sounded really good and is something that I want to be a part of, heading to bigger and better things with this club.
'There is so much more for me to do - I've got a point to prove. I feel like I can always get better, no matter how old you are. There are always things to learn. I believe that will happen here with the manager, staff and players alongside helping me along the way.'

Crisis club Sheffield Wednesday can't afford to think about the future

New Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen admitted he was living day-to-day at the crisis club rather than setting targets for the season ahead. A stormy past few months has seen Wednesday hit with several EFL -imposed embargoes for financial breaches, including failing to pay players and staff on time in May, June and July. That led to the 15 first-team players still on the books at the club to boycott a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley, which came to light on the same day Pedersen was announced as Owls boss. Pedersen is certain a repeat scenario would not unfold in their Championship curtain-raiser at Leicester on Sunday, although he was unwilling to think too much beyond the East Midlands trip. The Danish boss told the PA news agency: 'I think if I spoke about goal-setting – with 15 players right now – and say we will stay in the league or this or that, this is not where we are right now. 'Tomorrow, I will do everything with my staff to have the best (training) session for the players and then on Sunday, make the best possible game plan. This is where we are right now. 'Of course, I have an idea of how the club should look in the future. In my head, I know where we want to be but this is not interesting for the players right now. 'I think I have a really good relationship with the players. I'm convinced we have a group who are really looking forward to Sunday's game and will do everything they can for our club. 'How the players are handling this situation is not for everyone to do this, it's for special ones and they're doing a really special job at the moment.' Pedersen stepped up from assistant last week to replace Danny Rohl, who left the club by mutual consent after helping them avoid relegation in 2023-24 before overseeing a respectable 12th-place finish last season. Unable to sign or loan players for a fee until January 2027, Pedersen is working diligently to bump up the threadbare playing and non-playing numbers at Hillsborough and bring in individuals for free. Adding to the uncertainty is owner Dejphon Chansiri looking to offload the club but Pedersen, who says he speaks 'regularly' with the Thai businessman, has no regrets about committing to Wednesday. Pedersen said: 'What (Chansiri) said to me the last time we spoke is he will do everything he can to solve the problem as quick as possible. I think he'll do what he can. 'To be Sheffield Wednesday manager is an honour. I spoke with (other) clubs but I said to my wife 'it's really interesting but you know where my heart is'. 'My family love to stay here. My two boys love to be in the school where they are, they love to play football here and my wife loves to be here. When the club asked me to come back, I had no doubt. 'It's important (to look at) what can I control, what can I not control? Of course we need new players and new coaches, but right now it's not so easy just to find players and players and players. 'It's a tough environment right now because there are so many things (happening) from outside. But I have the biggest respect for my players and staff and how they are handling the situation.'

Five England players nominated for women's Ballon d'Or after Euro 2025 triumph

Five of England's European Championship-winning squad have been nominated for this year's women's Ballon d'Or, including three Arsenal players who claimed a club and country double of European titles this summer. Leah Williamson, Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly all shared Champions League and Euros triumphs, and are joined on the nominees list by Lucy Bronze and Hannah Hampton, who both won domestic trebles with Chelsea and clinched back-to-back European titles with victory over Spain in Basel last month. For the men's Ballon d'Or, four English players have been nominated, with Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Cole Palmer and Declan Rice all on the list alongside Scotland's Scott McTominay, who has been recognised after his widely lauded contribution to Napoli's Serie A triumph. The Arsenal and England full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly made the young players' list. Sarina Wiegman, the Lionesses' coach, has been nominated for the women's Johan Cruyff Trophy, for the best coach, alongside Arsenal's Renée Slegers and Chelsea's Sonia Bompastor. Nigeria's Justine Madugu and Brazil's Arthur Elias have also been nominated after their triumphs in their respective continental competitions. The 19-year-old England striker, Michelle Agyemang, is nominated for the young player award – the Kopa Trophy. Her two late equalisers in the knockout stages of Euro 2025 were instrumental in England reaching the final. The Chelsea youngster Wieke Kaptein is also on that five-player list. Hampton, who saved two penalties in the Euro 2025 final, is also nominated for the Yashin Trophy for goalkeepers, along with Arsenal's Daphne van Domselaar. Seven Arsenal players are among the women's Ballon d'Or prize list, after their Champions League final victory over Barcelona in Lisbon, with Spain's Mariona Caldentey, Australia's Steph Catley, the USA's Emily Fox and Norway's Frida Maanum joining Williamson, Russo and Kelly. Chelsea have two further representatives in Sandy Baltimore and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, while the Scotland and Real Madrid midfielder, Caroline Weir, has also made the list, alongside Brazil's Marta and last year's winner, Aitana Bonmatí of Spain. As expected, the men's Ballon d'Or list also includes big-name nominees such as Kylian Mbappé, Mohamed Salah and Vinícius Júnior, along with Manchester City's Erling Haaland and the new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyökeres. Arne Slot and Enzo Maresca are among five nominees for the men's coach prize. Chelsea and Liverpool have both been nominated for men's club of the year, while Arsenal and Chelsea are in the running for the women's club of the year.
