OpenAI unveils ChatGPT agent to shop online, create slides for users

OpenAI is rolling out new options for chatbot ChatGPT to carry out a variety of increasingly complicated tasks on a user's behalf, part of its push to bring so-called AI agents to the mainstream.
ChatGPT agent, set to be unveiled during a livestreamed event on Thursday, is designed to streamline personal and professional projects, such as planning a meal and ordering ingredients for it online, or creating a slideshow for a business meeting. The tool works through OpenAI's flagship chatbot and combines the capabilities of two AI services it rolled out earlier this year: Operator, which can browse, type and click on the internet much in the way a human would; and Deep Research, which is meant to handle time-consuming online research.
The San Francisco-based company said the agent features will be available immediately to its paid Pro, Plus and Team subscribers, with plans to release it later this summer to other enterprise and education customers. Some of the details of the software were previously reported by the Information.
A growing number of tech companies, including OpenAI backer Microsoft Corp. and rival Anthropic, are focusing on agents, or AI software that can complete multistep tasks for users with minimal supervision. OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman previously said agents will be 'the next giant breakthrough' for AI. The hope is that such tools can save users time and thereby live up to the long-held promise that AI will make people more productive. For now, however, the software can still be frustrating and slow.
In a demonstration of the ChatGPT agent this week, Neel Ajjarapu, OpenAI's product manager for the software, gave the chatbot a detailed prompt: Browse Etsy for vintage-style lamps that are under a couple hundred dollars and available with free shipping, then put the best-looking items in his online shopping cart and provide a URL for each one.
OpenAI has also experimented with using the tool to make presentations and PowerPoints, Ajjarapu said, though he cautioned it's more for making 'very early rough drafts' of presentations people can then refine. Microsoft, the company that makes PowerPoint, also offers AI tools to help professionals draft presentations.
Ajjarapu said the AI model that powers the tool uses a computer and web browser to complete assignments. It can also take in feedback from the user while a task is underway and alter its approach, he said. While users are accustomed to chatting in nearly real time with ChatGPT, it can take much longer — several minutes at least — for the chatbot to complete agent-like tasks.
AI agents present new safety and security risks, given the potential for AI to make mistakes or be misused by bad actors. The company said ChatGPT agent is meant to turn down some tasks, including those related to finances or legal advice. There are also a number of actions the tool will seek permission for before carrying out, including making purchases, the company said. For some tasks, such as writing emails, the service will require a user to supervise it.
As with the launches of Operator and Deep Research, the company acknowledged its latest agent effort still needs work.
'It is far from perfect,' said OpenAI Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil during the demonstration. 'But I think if we had gone back six months ago or 12 months ago and said this was going to be possible today, we would have been pretty excited about it.'

Tata Motors fends off investor skepticism on $4.4 billion Iveco acquisition

Tata Motors Ltd assuaged investor concerns over its acquisition of Italian truck and bus maker Iveco for $4.4 billion, reasoning that it would help generate more returns for shareholders when it starts trading as a standalone entity later this year. Less than 12 hours after Tata Motors announced its largest acquisition ever, its management fielded questions from analysts and investors over the rationale for the acquisition. 'It is a meaningful, large acquisition… There is an understanding between the two companies to build a business of scale and size,' chief financial officer P.B. Balaji said during the call. Achieving high growth in the commercial vehicle business isn't easy and India's largest commercial vehicle maker needs such acquisitions to deliver growth to shareholders, the management added. 'Market shares are highly stable in the commercial vehicle business. It is not a very disruptive business. Diversification of cash flows is important to maintain growth in the business,' Balaji explained. Tata Motors shares were up 0.28% at ₹ 670.30 each in early afternoon trade on NSE. After the deal was announced late Wednesday, investors noted the possibility of a boost in earnings. But they also raised concerns as previous similar acquisitions—such as that of South Korea-based Daewoo's commercial vehicle business for $102 million in 2004—did not result in meaningful gains in the international markets. Some investors also highlighted challenges post Tata Motors's acquisition of UK-based Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 for $2.3 billion, and Tata Steel Ltd's acquisition of Corus Plc., also based in the UK, for $13.1 billion in 2007. 'Given the group's challenging experience with Corus and JLR acquisitions, why do you think this is somewhere Tata Motors can create value?,' asked Sonal Gupta, head of research-equities, at HSBC Asset Management India. 'Tata Motors CV (commercial vehicles) has limited international presence. We haven't really been able to capitalize the tech from Tata Daewoo to grow internationally.' Balaji said Tata Motors's portfolio and business level were close to that of Iveco, an acronym for Industrial Vehicles Corp., and the newly formed entity post the acquisition would invest up to $1.7 billion each year. 'Opportunities like these do not come when you want. You move when such opportunities arise. There was a very small window to get this business,' the CFO told the investors and analysts in attendance. On the JLR and Daewoo acquisitions, Balaji said JLR was a premium-luxury player and Tata Motors was a mass player at the time of acquisition, resulting in some hiccups, while Daewoo was a small deal limited to a single market. 'We have had our learnings from the experience,' Balaji assured investors. During Thursday's call, analysts from Morgan Stanley, Kotak Institutional Equities, and Bank of America raised questions about the calculation of free cash flow expectations and potential earnings boost. Per the company's estimate, Tata Motors and Iveco would have a significant combined global presence, with sales of over 540,000 units and over $25 billion in revenue. Europe would account for half of the combined group's total sales, followed by 35% in India and the remaining 15% in the Americas. Tata Motors lined up $4.36 billion in funding from Morgan Stanley Bank NA, Morgan Stanley Senior Funding Inc., and MUFG Bank Ltd for the acquisition, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. The company will look for fundraising opportunities to repay the debt, of which 30-40% will be equity and 60-70% will be debt, it added. Tata Motors said the acquisition of Iveco will allow the company to enter geographies like Latin America, where it was not previously possible due to fund and network constraints. In a note on Wednesday, analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities said the acquisition would lead to an earnings boost for Tata Motors, with earnings per share estimated to increase by 4%. 'However, the key downside risk for Iveco is possibility of a sales downcycle in Europe and US CV markets resulting in lower earnings in near-term,' they wrote. The commercial vehicle business is the second largest for Tata Motors, contributing 17% to its 2024-25 revenue. However, the business's overall sales volume declined 5%, although exports grew 3%. Since the first confirmation of advanced talks of a deal between Tata Motors and Iveco on 30 July, Tata Motors shares have fallen by 3% while the Nifty Auto shed 1%.

ChatGPT Agent Bypasses CAPTCHA, Sparks Security Debate

In a development that feels more like a scene from a science fiction movie than reality, OpenAI's latest ChatGPT Agent has stirred controversy by reportedly bypassing one of the internet's most common security measures — the 'I'm not a robot' CAPTCHA. Designed by Cloudflare, this verification tool is widely used to distinguish between human users and bots attempting to access websites. The incident came to light after a Reddit user shared their experience with ChatGPT's newest capabilities. The user, who was testing the advanced version of ChatGPT Pro with agentic AI enabled, noticed the AI not only surfing websites and analyzing data but also casually completing CAPTCHA challenges meant to block automated access. The Reddit post quickly gained traction, showing screenshots where the AI narrated its own activity: 'I'll click the 'Verify you are human' checkbox to complete the verification on Cloudflare. This step is necessary to prove I'm not a bot and proceed with the action.' In another capture, the AI confirms its success: 'The Cloudflare challenge was successful. Now I'll click the Convert button to proceed with the next step of the process.' This unexpected capability is part of OpenAI's new ChatGPT Agent, a more autonomous, goal-driven version of the popular chatbot. The system is designed to perform complex multi-step tasks independently — from intelligent web navigation and secure logins to data analysis and generating editable documents. According to OpenAI, 'It brings together three strengths of earlier breakthroughs: Operator's ability to interact with websites, Deep Research's skill in synthesising information, and ChatGPT's intelligence and conversational fluency.' These agentic features are currently available only to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers and must be activated manually via 'Agent Mode.' When enabled, the AI operates using a virtual machine that shifts seamlessly between reasoning and action, enabling it to complete intricate workflows without needing continuous human input. While the technology is impressive, it has raised legitimate concerns about cybersecurity. CAPTCHA systems like Cloudflare's checkbox are foundational to protecting websites from spam and automated abuse. The fact that an AI can now bypass such verification challenges with apparent ease suggests that traditional security tools may soon be rendered obsolete. Experts in cybersecurity are already voicing concerns about the broader implications. If AI tools can impersonate human behavior online convincingly enough to bypass protective barriers, developers and site administrators may need to urgently re-evaluate their defenses. In response to the uproar, OpenAI has assured users that the system includes multiple safeguards. 'We've strengthened robust controls and added safeguards for challenges such as handling sensitive information on the live web, broader user reach, and (limited) terminal network access,' the company stated. Importantly, they noted that the Agent 'always requests permission before taking any significant action,' and that users retain full control and can intervene at any time. Still, the incident has reignited conversations about the ethical and security implications of increasingly autonomous AI systems. While their potential to simplify digital tasks is undeniable, the challenge now lies in ensuring they do not compromise the very fabric of internet safety.
