Martin Keown says one Arsenal star 'won't sleep' after PSG defeat

Metro07-05-2025

Martin Keown said Arsenal star Bukayo Saka 'won't sleep' after the Gunners were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG.
Mikel Arteta's side travelled to Paris hoping to overturn a one-goal deficit and book their place in the Champions League final.
But it was Paris Saint-Germain who set up an intriguing final against Inter Milan, Luis Enrique's men beating Arsenal 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.
Fabian Ruiz's superb strike put PSG in control of the second leg clash and Achraf Hakimi appeared to put the tie to bed when he doubled the hosts' lead on 72 minutes.
Saka pulled a goal back, however, before missing an open goal which would have set up an incredibly nervy finale at Parc des Princes.

'It was a painful miss,' Arsenal legend Keown said on TNT Sports after his former club fell short of the Champions League final.
'It was painful and it will hurt Saka. He won't sleep for two or three nights. But he can be proud of his performance, he was causing major problems.'
Keown added: 'You have to hold your hands up to PSG. Arsenal can be proud of what they have done this season in our second year back in the Champions League. More Trending
'But it has caught up with us that we don't have a proper centre-forward, two of them are out tonight.
'For PSG they have no Neymar, no Messi, no Mbappe, all out the door, but now they are a complete side. I've not see forward players working so hard.
'How do you beat them? They have to be hot favourites to win this now. You have to give them credit.'

Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in escalating Ballon d'Or row

Franck Ribery has previously expressed his displeasure at missing out on the Ballon d'Or in 2013 to five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and has once again hit out at the Portuguese forward Franck Ribery has mocked Cristiano Ronaldo 's claim about the Ballon d'Or after he revealed his three favourites. The latest iteration of the award is set to be handed out in a glitzy ceremony in Paris in September. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after helping the French side to the Champions League for the first time. Lamine Yamal and Mohamed Salah have also been mentioned as contenders for the award. ‌ Meanwhile, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has offered his take on this year's frontrunners and claimed that Dembele could be the favourite after his European success. He said: 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. ‌ 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' Ribery has since replied with a scathing comment on social media. 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?,' Ribery asked on Twitter alongside three laughing emojis. It is not the first time that Ribery has expressed his annoyance at missing out on the Ballon d'Or. The Frenchman was among the front-runners for the award back in 2013 after helping Bayern Munich to the Champions League crown. But he ended up finishing third behind Messi and Ronaldo - the latter claiming the crown with 27.99% of the votes. And that is a call that still wrangles with Ribery to his day. ‌ Who should win this year's Ballon d'Or? Share your thoughts in the comments below 'It was unfair," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year. "It was an incredible season for me, and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice." Ronaldo has since added a further three Ballon d'Ors to his collection, his last coming in 2017 when he was still with Real Madrid. His former teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have won the award since, with Messi also scooping a further two. Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the current holder after becoming the first Premier League player since Ronaldo in 2008 to win the award. Crystal Palace line up £40m-rated AC Milan star Strahinja Pavlovic in Marc Guehi replacement transfer

OLIVER GLASNER will make a new move to sign AC Milan's Strahinja Pavlovic with the Italian club wanting £40million. The Crystal Palace boss thinks the powerful Serb would be an ideal addition with Europe on the agenda next term. Thomas Tuchel says England star looked 'out of rhythm' after Andorra win

Thomas Tuchel said the decision to bench Declan Rice for England's win over Andorra came after the midfielder lacked 'rhythm' in the build-up to the game. England made it three wins from three in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, but ultimately flattered to deceive in their 1-0 win over Andorra. The Three Lions huffed and puffed, dominating the ball for large swathes of the game, but only Harry Kane found his way onto the scoresheet midway through the second half. Still getting to grips with his squad, Tuchel fielded an experimental XI in Barcelona, with Curtis Jones deployed at right-back and Jordan Henderson starting in the heart of England's midfield for the first time since 2023. Rice has been a mainstay of England's midfield for the past few years, but only came on as a late second-half sub, with Tuchel suggesting the decision to bench the Arsenal star was solely based on what he had seen in training prior to the game. 'Declan [Rice] looked a little bit out of rhythm and I think Jordan [Henderson] deserved to play,' Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live post-match. 'And also for what Jordan brings to this group, well deserved. We started well and then lost the rhythm and precision and also the energy to be more decisive and score more goals. 'It is necessary that we look at it and then present in detail to the players what we don't like, what we want to do better and what are the standards.' Rice played 52 games in all competitions for Arsenal last season, and is one of many England stars who could have done without this international break at the end of the campaign. But Tuchel insisted that fatigue after a draining season was no excuse for England's lack of urgency against their lowly-ranked opposition on Saturday evening. 'The window is the window, so no excuses of course,' the German said post-match. 'We said many times that the clubs don't like the window, and even for the national teams, it's not an easy window because they come from holidays and long seasons. But still, I think we can and have to do better in the 90 minutes. 'We played 25 minutes where I had the feeling it was a matter of time before we created chances and scored, but we lost this momentum completely in the last 20 minutes of the first half. 'Started okay again for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but we lost it again. It was a lack of energy and quality at the end of both halves and I think it's the most honest thing to admit it and not talk around it. 'We expect more and we can deliver more and we'll try to take this as a learning and do better as quickly as possible.' Kane's second-half strike saw England's captain notch up his 450th career goal, but the Bayern Munich striker admitted his side must be better regardless of the schedule. More Trending 'It's not one that many will remember and we had good spells but we take the three points and move on,' he told ITV post-match. 'We were probably not good enough on the ball and it gave them some confidence and then the last five or 10 minutes, we have to stop them. 'We need to be better for sure. June is never an easy camp and we have people coming in after long seasons. We have a friendly on Thursday we can learn from again. 'The fans were great and they made themselves heard, and we are disappointed we couldn't score more but we will look towards the next game.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
